Description

Music’s ability to lift us from despair or deep pain, or at least express our response to spiritual and physical wellness, are neither new nor new age, as 12th-century composer and healer Hildegard von Bingen well understood. English violinist Hugo Ticciati, who will direct this program of meditative but emotionally charged music in his Australian debut, experienced these qualities and “the interconnectedness of everything” as he sought ways to alleviate physical pain so severe it would force him to stop playing. Exploring such responses to life-changing upheavals, Latvian composer Peteris Vasks’ neo-spiritual Lonely Angel was written as a meditation on Mother Earth and redemption. Beethoven’s String Quartet in A minor, a hymn of thanksgiving that begins as a slow prayer before becoming jubilant and ecstatic, emerged from Beethoven’s recovery from a serious illness.

An even greater blow to Beethoven, the realisation of inevitable early deafness, saw his utter despair and futility expressed in the unsent letter of farewell known as the Heiligenstadt Testament. Australian Brett Dean’s Testament draws inspiration from this writing, capturing the fluctuations of hesitancy and passion, and the search for clarity, for healing, in this “wretched despair”.

Description

Local Artist Jon Tarry’s work Deep Six is part of sonic tour of popular and exclusive WA surfing spots. Interested in the cross-section between sound, video and sculpture, Tarry has turned to investigations of what he has termed ‘spatial power’ in public spaces. Experiences of global encounters—like airports, public squares and the like—are increasingly dominating his practice, but this has also fine-tuned his focus on the local.

Recording sounds at three surfing spots known by the locals and surfing aficionados, Tarry has attempted to bring a semblance of that experience to an audience in a dry, safe building. The locations he is working with are Deep Six, located at Cottesloe, Huzzas, located close to Gracetown in Margaret River, and Mettams Pool at Trigg. Creating computer coding to map an area, as with Mettams Pool for instance, Tarry uses these ‘drawings’ together with the on-site recordings, and digitally and sonically reconstructs the location. He takes us into the surfers’ experience of the spots, but asks: how far from nature are we when we are in nature, and how much in it are we when we are seemingly away from it?

Description

Great art and the Soviet regime.  Joy and creativity can’t be held down forever, so even in the darkest decades of cruel oppression that spread from Soviet Russia through Eastern Europe in the 20th century, music bloomed and imaginations flew. Humour, black as some of it may have been, also thrived. This was life, as the Russians like to say, “laughing through tears”. Estonian Arvo Pärt is one of the most performed and influential living composers. In his deeply loved work Tabula Rasa, for two violins, prepared piano and orchestra, he extends “small steps of tolerance to the world”, seeking spirituality and independence through silence and harmony.

Meanwhile, within Russia, Shostakovich and Prokofiev represented two still hotly contested strands: the supposed collaborators and the resisters. Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony in C minor, a signature piece for the virtuosic ACO, was a lament for victims of fascism and war, but also an act of self-reflection whose movements evolve from elegy and brutal force into acceptance and farewell. Resistance will be whispered, literally, during Saariaho’s Nymphéa: Misterioso. The short piece by the Finnish composer, whose country has always had a complicated and delicate relationship with its large neighbour, Russia, includes a poem by the great 20th-century Russian poet, Arseny Tarkovsky, which will be whispered by members of the Orchestra.

Their compilation The Best of Gipsy Kings was in the charts for over a year.

In their native Gipsy language ‘gitane’ they introduced listeners to a unique, irresistible blend of traditional flamenco styles, vigorous guitar work and passionate vocals; this indigenous traditional style is known as "rumba flamenca".

Over the years The Gipsy Kings—whose members hail from the gypsy settlements in Arles and Montpelier in the south of France—have included singers and guitarists from the Reyes (Canut, Nicolas, Pablo and Patchai) and Baliardo families (Diego, Paco and Tonino). Lead singer Nicolas Reyes is the son of famed Flamenco singer José Reyes, who, with Manitas de Plata, sold millions of records in the 1960s and 70s.

As founding members, songwriters and singers - Tonino Baliardo and Nicolas Reyes hold the torch and continue The Gipsy Kings long family tradition. Don't miss this high-energy celebration!

Description

Methyl Ethel tours Australia for the release of the 2020 EP Hurts to Laugh.

Methyl Ethel is a project that’s the brainchild of a single mind—writer, performer and producer Webb—while also being a live band of five members. It makes music that draws from myriad influences and a history of new wave and indie rock, while sounding like its own thing entirely. Both familiar and alien, intimate and aloof, you never quite know what you’re in for, but the trip is bound to be enchanting.

Here’s a read on Hurts To Laugh. It’s an EP by Western Australia’s Methyl Ethel,
recorded within the same sessions as 2019’s Triage. It marks the ongoing output of producer and multi-instrumentalist Jake Webb’s restless mind. Time and again he’s proven that while there’s no distinction between music and art, psychologically speaking there is a difference between feeling and emotion. One is a conscious response to a set of circumstances, the other is the unconscious conditions of our very being that only occasionally surfaces through feelings. Hurts To Laugh excavates this ambiguous site, implied by its very title. You can laugh so hard it hurts—pure joy. Or laugh despite the pain—despair. These paradoxes run throughout the EP, as well as everything that came before.

Description

His thirties have been eventful to say the least. At 40, his life is in the best shape in living memory... but one problem remains, and it really is a huge one. Spiritual enquiry meets high-octane observational comedy as Watson, as usual, attempts to cram a year of pathological overthinking into just under an hour's stand-up. Maybe we'll even solve the huge problem. Doubt it, though.

"A master at letting us in on his vulnerability... delightfully deft mixture of low-key happenings and high-end bants"
- The Times

"Quite unlike anything else I’ve seen in almost 20 years of covering the Fringe...witty, warm, perfectly judged"
- Telegraph

"He always displays an innate understanding of what the audience wants...creating a bespoke experience for every gig, an added flourish to a strong hour of stand-up"
- Chortle

"A quick-fire hour of fun"
- Metro

"A classy, confident hour of comedy from one of the Fringe's most celebrated sons"
- Fest
