Saturday April 10 offers artist talks, with a chance to dig deep into the peculiar minds of a handful of festival artists. The Rechabite is the venue of choice for the festival’s second week. Upstairs in the Hall, on Wednesday April 14, WAM-nominated songwriting wunderkind Nika Mo launches a new album on Tone List featuring a nine-piece band that smashes improvised music and avant-garde folk together in a sticky mess. Description
As a 15-year-old student nearing the end of his first year at the Vienna Conservatory, Gustav Mahler composed one movement of a piano quartet, a work that always gives the impression that something bigger is struggling to emerge. Following Mahler’s own tradition of enlarging certain chamber pieces, this program includes an orchestration of the quartet, made by the outstanding violinist Harry Ward: an ANAM alumnus and a Musica Viva FutureMaker.
Alfred Schnittke was keenly aware of his Soviet/German musical heritage, even as he stomped on it in heavy boots. Yet his piano concerto is a touching affirmation of his artistic roots, and his affection for Tchaikovsky makes the two Russians good bedfellows, the elder’s Serenade here prefaced by Estonian composer Mihkel Kerem’s Lamento, a work of searing beauty.
ANAM’s ensemble of wonderful young string players is directed with equal verve by the terrific Sophie Rowell, one of Australia’s most admired instrumentalists. They are joined onstage by Adelaide’s brilliant, Russian-trained Konstantin Shamray.

Description
The Darlington Quartet is an ensemble of gifted musicians drawn from the Australian String Quartet and West Australian Symphony Orchestra. The Darlington Quartet specialises in chamber music played in intimate settings, where they are able to create a closer connection with the audience.
The players will provide wonderful insights by introducing the pieces they have chosen. These include Ravel's virtuosic string quartet No.1, which displays his endless imagination for sound and texture on a magic carpet ride of colour and fantasy. Tchaikovsky's first quartet is full of the heartfelt melodies and irresistible rhythms, including the famous slow movement, that make him such a beloved composer. The Darlington Quartet love these works because they vividly show the imaginative and expressive possibilities of the string quartet.

Description
Born on April 22nd 1922, bassplayer and composer Charles Mingus is one of the giants of Jazz. A double bass prodigy, his driving bass lines provided support for the likes of Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo, Charlie Parker (and many more) and he was one of the first double bass players to assimilate the bebop language. Mingus was an incredible double bass player, but he is perhaps even more revered as one of the most influential jazz composers of all time. He began composing his own music whilst in his teens and led numerous bands until his untimely death. He composed over 300 compositions and released over 50 albums in his lifetime. His music spans new-orleans style jazz, swing, bop, blues, gospel, latin, the avant-garde, collective improvisation and classical music – occasionally in the same composition! The Pete Jeavons Nonet will pay tribute to Charles Mingus and his music at The Ellington Jazz club on Thursday April 22nd; on what would have been Mingus’ 99th birthday, had his life and career not been cut short at the age of 56. You can expect to hear Mingus classics such as ‘Goodbye Pork Pie Hat’ and ‘Better Get Hit In Yo Soul’ alongside some of his lesser known (but equally enthralling) compositions such as ‘Open Letter To Duke’ and ‘Sue’s Changes’. Performed by Perth’s top jazz musicians in ‘mini-big-band’ format this will be a night of high energy, uplifting music guaranteed to blow away your covid cobwebs. Pete Jeavons - Doublebass/MD, Ricki Malet - Trumpet, Matt Smith - Trumpet, Jeremy Greig - Trombone, Daniel Hart - Alto Saxophone, Jamie Oehlers - Tenor Saxophone, Marek Sprogowski - Baritone Saxophon, Tom O'Halloran - Piano, Daniel Susnjar - Drums

Description
Since their formation, whatever genre norms, boundaries, and regulations thrust upon Perth Australia’s Voyager have been smashed. They embrace, if not brandish pop; employ a keytar on stage, and bring forward a positive, if not uplifting feeling to their music, running head-first into the endless parade of heavy bands who see the world in a different light. Voyager simply prefers to see the bright side of things. Following the successful release of ‘Colours in the Sun’, which saw a chart debut of #1 in the AIR charts, and highlighted as The Music’s ‘Album of the Week’, Voyager will still perform a headline tour, but it will now go ahead in April 2021.

Description
Django Reinhardt, the founding father of Gypsy Jazz, is revered in the guitar world for his superlative skills on the acoustic guitar, but less so for his work on the electric. As the 1940’s dawned and bebop was born, Django was inspired by the great American jazz artists such as Charlie Christian, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. This in turn prompted him to put on hiatus his infamous string quintet in favour of a more traditional American line-up comprising drums, piano, double bass, clarinet and of course, himself on electric guitar. Now he could soar as high and as loud as he wanted, a feat previously impossible on his trusted Selmer Maccaferri acoustic! Co-led by bassist/MD Pete Jeavons and guitarist Lachlan Gear, The Electric Django Quintet performs repertoire from Django’s bebop period alongside compositions by others who were heavily influenced and inspired by Django such as Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Bireli Lagrene and more. Featuring fleet-fingered guitar work from Lachlan Gear, original arrangements by Pete Jeavons and some of Perth’s finest jazz musicians, The Electric Django Quintet has all the ingredients for a great evening of jazz that is sure to please.

Description
Two hundred years ago, in 1821, Greeks rose in revolt against the mighty Ottoman Empire, which had dominated their land for centuries. The Revolution of 1821 led to the establishment of an independent, internationally recognised Greek kingdom in 1832. Always, from before the Revolution to the present day, music and song have inspired Greek people to struggle for a better world and to honour those who have given their lives for the cause. To mark the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Greek War of Independence, we bring you a concert with songs of revolution, liberation and empowerment created over several decades by four great composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries: Vassilis Tsitsanis, Manos Hatzidakis, Stavros Xarchakos and Mikis Theodorakis. The concert will feature international artist Dimitris Basis, together with a Greek band and a symphony orchestra, under the direction of conductor George Ellis.

Description
From America’s most produced and popular living playwright, Lauren Gunderson, comes the WA premiere of the award-winning I and You. Caroline (Sophia Forrest) hasn’t been at school for months – sick at home, she’s trapped in her bedroom with only Facebook, Twitter and Insta for company. When classmate Anthony (Darius Williams) arrives unexpectedly, spouting Walt Whitman’s 'Leaves of Grass' and brandishing an unfinished English Lit project he urgently needs her help with, she is less than impressed and rejects this intrusion into her damaged life. As they come together and reveal themselves through Whitman’s electric poetry and over waffle fries, they discover a connection far deeper than either of them could ever have imagined. Directed by Kate Cherry.

Description
How will we act, now, when the world seems to be ending? Three of Western Australia’s most cherished and revered actors join forces in a provocative new drama set to make its WA premiere at Burt Hall 8-29 May. Jenny Davis, Vivienne Garret and Andrew Lewis bring this powerful play to life to reflect on the big questions of responsibility and the impact of human activity on the planet. In an idyllic cottage on the British coast, two retired nuclear scientists, Hazel (Jenny Davis) and Robin (Andrew Lewis), are enjoying the quiet life. Apart from the electricity rationing, daily radiation warnings and coastal erosion, everything with them is fine. Around them however, the world is in chaos, with the fallout of a nuclear power plant meltdown threatening their very existence. When old friend and colleague Rose (Vivienne Garrett) arrives unexpectedly, their future and past lives collide as they debate the present and the challenges they face. Directed by Stuart Halusz.

Having previously sold out their 2015, 2017 and 2018 Australian tours, the quintessential UK reggae group will return to Australia in May, with plans to perform in previously uncharted territory; hitting Canberra, Wollongong and the Gold Coast for the first time, including return performances in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
“Our previous Australian tours were all so much fun for us – you guys definitely know how to party down under” said founding member songwriter Robin Campbell. “We’ve been waiting for a chance to get back out to Australia since we last left, so we’re looking forward to getting down under to celebrate 40 years and a new album, in one of our favourite parts of the world.”
The ‘40th Anniversary For The Many Tour’ will offer audiences a taste of classic hits like ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘I Got You Babe’ and ‘Falling In Love With You’, as well as tracks from their latest release ‘For The Many’ which will be performed live in Australia for the first time.
Becoming a household name around the world throughout the 80s and 90s, UB40 (named after the UK’s unemployment benefit form) became known for reviving reggae across the world, filling the charts with their own songs and creating seminal versions of some of the world’s greatest tunes, crossing radio formats and continuing to dominate the airwaves to this day.
Joining them for their Australian leg of tour, is New Zealand’s incredible roots reggae band House of Shem!
