Description

Dvorák had the most marvellous and engaging response to the USA he encountered in the 1890s. Dvorák composed this quartet in an astonishingly productive couple of weeks, reacting with childlike enthusiasm to the sounds he encountered on a rare family holiday in the countryside.

How fitting to see this programmed alongside two distinctive and original masterpieces for piano quintet – and throwing into relief the mature and individual voice of young Australian composer Jakub Jankowski. And how brilliant to have them performed by the Goldner Quartet and Piers Lane – long-time friends, colleagues, collaborators – who for so long have championed the old and the new with utter commitment.

Artists:

DENE OLDING VIOLIN
DIMITY HALL VIOLIN
IRINA MOROZOVA VIOLA
JULIAN SMILES CELLO

PIERS LANE PIANO

Program:

JANKOWSKI String Quartet No.1 ‘Kairos’ (2020)*
DVORÁK String Quartet No. 12 in F, Op. 96 ‘American’ (1893)
ELGAR Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84 (1918-19)

Combining moving poetry, two choirs, orchestra and the platform of the Requiem mass, a history of heartbreak and horror is revealed in this monumental new work. With a fusion of Western classical tradition and First Nations culture, Eumeralla soars with resilience and reconciliation.

Sung in dialects of the Gunditjmara people of southwestern Victoria. Eumeralla, a war requiem for peace is presented in Perth with support from the Bendat Family Foundation. The Gunditjmara translation was the work of senior Gunditjmara language custodian Vicki Couzens and linguist Travers Eira.

WASO’s Indigenous Creative Collaborations are supported by Bendat Family Foundation.

  • Event Venue:Perth Concert Hall

Description

Let us paint a picture for you: The Angels walk on stage to Hooper Brewster-Jones’ overture from Australia Felix. Hooper’s grandsons, John and Rick, nod at each other. John then looks at his son, Sam, on bass, and smiles. Four generations of Brewsters making music. Full circle. A dream come true. The power of music. The Brewster Brothers’ incomparable guitar interplay, the rumbling rhythm section of Sam Brewster and Nick Norton, and the manic energy of front-man Dave Gleeson – a potent mix of menace and mirth. Then there’s the conductor, Rob John, who speaks both languages, classical and rock, taking charge of the orchestra. The power of The Angels is undiminished. Classic rock, classical music – seemingly, a clash of cultures and a moving tribute to bandmates who are no longer with us. In the end, this is a communal experience. Many members of the crowd have brought their children. Some are seeing The Angels for the very first time. This is family: A Symphony of Angels.
