Description

Purchased in 1925 by brothers Don and Frank Edgecombe who immigrated from the UK, this family-owned and operated business does things the old-fashioned way, serving fresh produce and fine table wines at their rustic cellar door and cafe restaurant with warm hospitality.

The Wine

Sparkling through to table wines, dessert wines and fortified wines are made, embodying the Swan Valley’s style of zesty, fruit-driven whites and warm, spicy reds. Varieties include Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Muscat, old-vine Shiraz and Muscadelle.

Cellar Door

Edgecombe Brothers Winery’s rustic cellar door is ably managed by Alfred Edgecombe, who welcomes all for a chat and a wine tasting, open daily.

The Food

The family-friendly café is open for breakfast and lunch, and particularly famous for its weekend brunch, made with scrumptious farm-fresh produce served with a relaxed winery atmosphere on the lawn or under the pergolas overlooking the vineyards. Open Monday to Thursday 10am - 4pm, Friday 10am - 5pm and weekends 9am - 5pm. Weekend bookings recommended.

Unique Highlights

Visit the family-friendly Friday night burger kitchen, serving gourmet, homemade burgers and popular kids foods throughout the year. Open Friday nights 5 - 9pm.

 

Fairbrossen Wines

Soak up the relaxed ambience of Carmel at this charming owner-operated winery, known for its hearty breakfasts and lunches, and boutique wines; handcrafted with ancient, rustic techniques.

Description

Winemaker Matt Bowness established Fairbrossen in 2011, following many years as a travelling winemaker in California and France and many years at Sittella Wines. Following a philosophy of minimum intervention, only the best fruit is hand-picked to ensure the highest quality of handcrafted wine.

The Wines

Fairbrossen Wines are grown in two estate-owned vineyards in the Perth Hills and Margaret River. Sparkling wines, still wines and liqueurs are made, including Chardonnay, Verdelho, Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Durif, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Pedro Ximinez.

The Food

'Tom's Kitchen' operates at Fairbrossen wines, and is open for lunch on Friday and breakfast and lunch on the weekends, serving a modern and generously priced, country-style menu.

Cellar Door

The tasting area at Fairbrossen offers a range of boutique wines, all of which have been handcrafted on the estate. Open Thursday to Sunday, 11am-4pm. Look out for a range of seasonal music, food and wine events.

 

Jadran Wines

Enjoy a friendly chat with the owners while discovering 30+ fortified wines, table wines and liqueurs at their third-generation, family-run winery located within the idyllic Orange Grove.

Description

Jadran was established in 1914 by Vladimir (Wally) Radojkovich, who purchased 22 acres of land with a desire to establish a vineyard and create a winery. Since then, Jadran Wines has welcomed many generations of family members to the vineyard; most recently, Wally's grandson Paul in 1990. Jadran incorporates traditional and modern winemaking methods to create a distinctive character in the winery's expansive range which is made from fruit sourced locally and from the Western Australia's south-west. With a creative approach to winemaking, Jadran has won many medals in Wine Shows all over Australia.

The Wines

Jadran Wines' range includes over 30 different fortified, still, sparkling wines and liqueurs. The collection of ports and liqueurs is bursting with interesting and exciting flavours to discover.

Cellar Door

Father and son Stephen and Paul Radojkovich offer generous tastings of their wines, and are well known for their friendly chats, stories and knowledge. The cellar door is open 7 days a week.

Mandoon Estate

Settled on the banks of the Swan in the 1840s, Mandoon is an iconic destination for the region with cellar door, fine dining restaurant, outdoor deli, microbrewery, gallery and kids play area.

Description

Settled by John Septimus Roe soon after the establishment of the Swan River Colony, Mandoon Estate has significant heritage. In the language of the local aboriginals, it means “place of many trees.”

The picturesque ground is complete with a kid’s play area and gallery located in the property’s original homestead, cellar door, microbrewery and varied eating facilities, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists looking to unwind.

In the words of Sir James Stirling: “The richness of the soil, the bright foliage of the shrubs, the majesty of the surrounding trees, the abrupt and red coloured banks of the River occasionally seen, and the view of the blue summits of the mountains from which we were not far distant, made the scenery around this spot as beautiful as anything or kind I had ever witnessed.”

Mandoon Estate is located just 30 minutes from Perth CBD and accessible by both road and river, or just a scenic helicopter flight away! Or for the ultimate weekend away, stay in one of 32 beautifully appointed rooms at the Colony.

THE WINES

A block of Verdelho was first planted in 1895 and still produces grapes today, make it one of the oldest commercially used vineyards in Western Australia.

The winery has only been producing wine since 2010, all of which can be enjoyed at the award-winning cellar door. The focus is on creating a boutique range of premium wines from well-preserved low-yielding vineyards in the Swan Valley and other regions. Varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Verdelho, Riesling, Chardonnay, Grenache, Cabernet, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz.

THE FOOD

Executive chef Michael Hartnell oversees the fine dining restaurant offering a modern Australian menu. For a more casual experience there’s an outdoor deli and bar offering pizza, roast meat on the spit and gourmet sausages, all located next to the children’s playground and gallery.

THE ‘HOMESTEAD’ MICROBREWERY

The ‘Homestead’ microbrewery remains the only brewery of its kind in Australia, using German manufactured Schulz brewing equipment to produce unique craft ales and cider.

TOURS & FUNCTIONS

Stunning grounds, a purpose-built function centre and private wine tasting cellar makes it possible to cater for all needs: a casual meal, intimate dinner, private tastings, wedding or gala ball. A range of experiences can be organised in advance, including corporate team building, bush tucker tasting packages, private tours, river cruises and scenic chopper flights. Extend your stay at the new 32 room luxe accommodation – The Colony.

Enjoy one of 32 beautifully appointed rooms, overlooking the historic Verdelho vines and the banks of the Swan. This the perfect base from which to explore the valley, be it a lazy day on the Estate, a leisurely lunch, gourmet ramble and gallery hopping around the Valley, or bush walking and mountain biking in the nearby national parks.

Choose to dine in their eclectic industrial style restaurant or on the patio while you partake in an afternoon of coffee, wine and a bite to eat. Plus, their kitchen serves the best local produce designed with you in mind. Children aren't forgotten with a range of kids meals that will satisfy even the smallest of mouths.

There is plenty of entertainment for the kids - with the chance to cruise the lake with our free paddle boats, play the Giant Connect Four, engage in a round of totem tennis, or take on the other kids with a game of backyard cricket. If more of a challenge is needed, ask one of our staff for our Nature Hunt activity - it's great after lunch fun or just let them run in the wide open spaces.

The Packing Shed At Lawnbrook

Description

Ever since holding their wedding reception at the property 18 years ago, owning and running the Lawnbrook Estate and restaurant has been a long-held dream for Rebekah and Bruce Wilson. For the last year, they have been lovingly restoring the property, preparing their first vintage, and refining their menus. With an acre of vines on the 10 acre historic property, a variety of estate-grown wines are produced, and the Packing Shed @ Lawnbrook, the estate's boutique cafe, serves breakfast, lunch, homemade cakes and coffee. 

The Wines
Lawnbrook Estate is the wine brand associated with the Packing Shed Restaurant and the small vineyard set along Piesse Brook. While thefocus is on producing food-friendly wine for the restaurant, cellar door sales and tastings are also available. The varieties include Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir, Semillon Chardonnay, Classic White, Pinot Rose, Shiraz, Tempranillo and Shiraz Tempranillo. 

The Food
Specialising in all things handmade and local, the Packing Shed Restaurant will be serving up breakfast and lunch from Friday to Sunday each week. Food is prepared onsite using seasonal and local produce whenever possible, catering to various dietary requirements. In warmer months, guests are invited to bring a picnic blanket and enjoy one of the Shed's cheeseboards on the lawn.

Description

Derek and Laura believe wine is one of life’s essentials. So essential, they came all the way from England to start their winery dream in Western Australia, establishing Upper Reach in 1997. They learnt to grow the grapes and make the wines as they went along and have turned their dream into an award-winning business with a popular cellar door and restaurant. They love sharing the fruits of their labour with visitors from near and far.

The Wines
All the wines are estate-grown. Varieties include Swan Valley classics of verdelho, shiraz, grenache and muscat, along with chardonnay, semillon cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and more.

Wine Tasting
The friendly Upper Reach cellar door wine tasting experience has been consistently awarded in Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine’s Annual Australian Cellar Door Awards. Wine tastings are offered daily from 10am – 5pm. Group tastings (10+ people) can be booked from $10 per person. Perhaps, stay a little longer with a glass of wine and game of bocce on the lawn.

The Food
Situated in a quiet corner of the Swan Valley, The Riverbrook Restaurant at Upper Reach is a treasure within the region. The modern menu features small tasting plates to large feasting platters along with more formal a la carte options. Open from 9am daily.

Tours
The classic Winery Tour & Tasting ($40) takes guests behind the scenes, with the unique opportunity to ‘walk the catwalk’ for a birds-eye winery view and taste barrel samples like a winemaker. Treat yourself with a Tour and 2-Course Lunch, or early birds will love the Winery Tour & Breakfast.

Unique Highlights
A terrific Wine 101 Appreciation class is held once a month on weekends. It’s a formal tasting experience with an inclusive casual vibe and held in the back of a working winery. The interactive session breaks down the complex wine world, inviting guests to ‘be the winemaker’ and learn about flavours, the influence of oak and other wine characteristics through wine blending and lots of tasting.

For something a little different, stay at Upper Reach’s luxurious 1907 Winery Spa Cottage which features panoramic vineyard views, a spa and more.
