Description

The Giles Family have a long history in farming and wine in Australian. William Giles was the first pioneer to bring grapes, olives and oranges to South Australia. Members of the Giles family moved from the Clare Valley to Willunga in 1936 to run a large dairy and sheep farm, which is now home to over 1000 sheep and 36 hectares of Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot.

Cellar Door

The cellar door at Ashley Estate is open Saturdays, Sundays and most public holidays from 11am to 5pm. There are generally between 5 and 6 vintage reds available for tasting, and an additional ‘Hidden Pinot Cave’ onsite offers tastings of the Estate’s Pinot Noir varieties.

Description

Black Swan Winery and Restaurant sits on a property formerly known as “Gidney’s Corner”.

Husband and wife team, Barry Scrivener and Robyn Meloury purchased Black Swan in 1998 and converted the property to a “restaurant within a winery”. The venue is purposely built for guests to capture fantastic views of vineyards, the Darling Ranges and adjacent rural surroundings. The design and building materials reflect a style and blend of rustic Australian ambience.

The vines were mostly planted in 1941, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Merlot, Chenin & Chardonnay and later, Shiraz. The first vintage in 2001 reaped gold medals for the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Franc at the 2002 Swan Valley Wine Show.

The panoramic views of the Darling Ranges are matched only by the fresh, seasonal produce on the menu, offering freshly-baked bread served with truffle oil to a drool-worthy red wine-braised beef cheek and seasonal delights. Chef’s gardens are established throughout of the property, providing much of the kitchen’s needs for organic herbs.

Description

Corymbia is the deep-rooted, far-sighted vision of husband-and wife-team, Rob and Genevieve Mann. The Mann name is synonymous with Western Australia’s Swan Valley, where Rob’s pioneering grandfather Jack worked a remarkable 51 consecutive vintages for Houghton. Rob was just a boy when he joined his father - former Australian test cricketer Tony - in planting the vines on what is now the dry-grown, organically farmed Corymbia vineyard. 
After building an exceptional reputation in their own right, the couple kicked off their homecoming dream, Corymbia, with the 2013 vintage, during Rob’s tenure as estate director at Newton Vineyard in Napa Valley. Now firmly ensconced back in the Swan Valley, Rob and Gen’s Chenin Blanc and Tempranillo-dominant red blend sit at the heart of a bright future for this brilliant duo.

Harris Organic Wines

Description

Harris Organic Wines is an extremely friendly place. Make your way past the cats and free-range chickens to the cellar door of this small boutique winery and you can enjoy a seated tasting of organic wines with winemaker and owner Duncan Harris (a $ 10.00 tasting fee applies, redeemable against any wine purchase).

Sustainability is central to Harris Organic’s philosophy. The wines are made with natural yeasts and the bare minimum of additives and preservatives. The grapes are irrigated only by what they receive from the sky and Duncan never uses any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers.

Minimal artificial energy sources are required. An underground cellar was built to obtain naturally cooler storage temperatures. The wines mature in oak barriques and hogsheads, ultimately sealed in recyclable glass bottles and natural cork, if available.

You can learn how organic wine is made with a guided walking tour through the vineyard, underground cellar and winery, finishing with a taste of some of the very best of  Duncan's certified organic dry white, red and fortified wines. Duncan is also licensed to distil spirits and sells his organic vodka and brandy at the cellar door and online. While you’re here, stock up on organic coffee and organic olive oil. 

Highway Wines

The last of the old-style Swan Valley wineries, crushing 100+ tonnes of fruit, producing 20 different styles of fortified wines sold by the bottle, in flagons and fill-your-own 2-litre containers.

Description

Established in 1954 by migrant Tony Bakranich, a self-taught winemaker, ownership has since passed to Velko and Helen Bakranich, the next generation of the family. Thankfully, nothing much has changed over the years.

James Halliday notes Highway Wines as “A survivor of another era, when literally dozens of such wineries plied their business in the Swan Valley”. Over 10.5 hectares of land producing over 100 tonnes of fruit each year. Vintage Port is the most popular but they produce about 20 types including ports, muscat, tokay and sherries. Some of the wine is sold in bottles but the majority is sold in two-litre flagons and those who want to bring their own containers. Vintage port is the most popular drop in Highway's fortified range and all the grapes come from the 10.5 hectare vineyard, which produces more than 100 tonnes of fruit each year.

Sales are made through the cellar door; open by appointment only.

Kyotmunga Estate

A quaint family-owned winery and olive grove within the Chittering Valley offering generous tastings of fresh olives, olive oil and Dukkah with full bodied, estate-grown wines.

Description

Beginning with 300 mandarin trees, the Kyotmunga became a vineyard and olive grove in 1997 under the ownership of Trevor and Lynette Chester. Major renovations were completed to create the cellar door in 2003, and the couple also played a key role with other winemakers in establishing the Chittering Valley Wine trail. All Kyotmunga wines are made on the premises within a farm shed that has been customised by Trevor to reduce temperature variation.

The Wines

Kyotmunga focuses on making full bodied Shiraz, Grenache and Taminga (a sweet white variety). These wines can be purchased at the cellar door, and can be delivered free of charge in the metropolitan area.

Cellar Door

The cellar door verandah overlooking the beautiful Chittering Valley offers a unique experience with plentiful tastings of wine, estate-grown olives, olive oil and Dukkah. The owners operate the cellar door and love discussing the process of grape growing and wine production. Open on weekends and public holidays from 11am-5pm.

The Food

Kyotmunga offers laidback dining, featuring platters of dolmades, cheese, olives and dukkah, and Devonshire teas. If visiting in Spring look out for their farm-grown mandarins that can be purchased to take home.

Unique Highlights

The name Kyotmunga has historical significance as it is the first recorded place name in the Chittering area. It is understood that the word Kyotmunga in the local Indigenous language means place of water. To maintain the historical significance of the name, the WA Government named a trail adjacent to the property the Kyotmunga Walk Trail. The trail leads to the Avon Valley National Park, which contains an abundance of natural flora and fauna.

Lion Mill Vineyards

Description

What began as a hobby and just 100 vines for Ann and Patrick Bertola is now one of Perth Hill's most fruitful vineyards. Initially a part of an important timber milling area, the Lion Mill Vineyard is located on the northern side of a gently sloping valley on Charlotte Brook in Perth's Darling Ranges and was established in 1999, when the first Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted. The soils are those typical of the Perth Hills; loam, gravelly loam and lateritic gravels. The elevation (just under 300 metres), cold winters and hot dry summers all provide great growing conditions.

Lion Mill wines are produced from hand-picked fruit grown on the property. Care and time is constantly committed to the viticulture of grapes on the property, and tasks such as hand pruning, shoot thinning and fruit thinning all ensure that grapes are given the best opportunity to express their varietal characters.

The Wines

The wine range includes sparkling, still, dessert and fortified wines. Look out in particular for their Blanc de Blancs, and Zinfandel, a variety rarely seen in Western Australia.

Cellar Door

Looking out over the vineyards on this picturesque property, the Lion Mill cellar door offers a delightful visitor experience that is intimate, informative and relaxed. Tastings are available of the entire Lion Mill range, and the cellar door is open on weekends from 11am-5pm.

Malmalling Vineyard

Taste award-winning wines and unwind with a relaxed country lunch and live Sunday music at a tranquil and delightful family-owned vineyard beside the John Forrest National Park.

Description

Established in 2000 by the Chambers family, Malmalling Vineyard is located in the heart of the Perth Hills Wine Region. Nestled within a bushland setting, this picturesque boutique winery is situated on one of the highest points in Parkerville. 'Malmalling' is an Aboriginal name for the property originally owned by the Chambers' in the Mundaring Region from 1907, and the Vineyard today seeks to continue this family history through the maintenance of this name on their Parkerville property.

Our Wines

Malmalling Vineyard creates distinctive premium wines that capture the spirit and character of the Perth Hills Wine Region. All wines are made onsite by co-owner and award winning winemaker Kit Chambers, from the property's own hand-picked and crushed grapes. The winery produces a range of red wines including Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and white wines including Chardonnay and Verdelho.

Cellar Door

From Wednesdays to Sundays, wine can be tasted at the Cellar Door, enjoyed by the glass or bottle at the vineyard, or purchased to take home.

The Food

The Malmalling Cafe offers both a range of platters and a generous a la carte menu, perfect to enjoy with the wines. Dine in the comfort of the air-conditioned cafe, alfresco on the patio, or under the trees in the bush garden - where live music can be enjoyed on Sundays.  

Plume Estate

Take in sweeping views of the Bickley Valley's stunning vineyards at this boutique vineyard cafe, making a focused range of wines to enjoy with its popular Tapas-style lunch menu.

The most recent cellar door addition to Bickley Valley, Plume Estate is nestled on the side of a hill on Glen Isla Road, and boasts stunning views of the wine region. It is run by husband and wife Jim and Audrey Volmer.

The Wines

The wine range includes a Vintage Sparkling, a Rosé made from Merlot and a Fortified Shiraz.

Cellar Door

The cellar door is open from 12pm-4pm on Fridays and from 11am-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays and offers tastings of all the wines.

The Food

The cosy restaurant features modern, artful Tapas-style dishes, with spectacular views across the Valley making it an ideal setting for a picturesque lunch. Open from 11am-5pm from Friday to Sunday. Bookings recommended.

Description

The Stakehill Estate is a family run vineyard and winery in Karnup, halfway between Rockingham and Mandurah that was established in 1998.

A range of Chilli Wines in a variety of 'heat' levels are handcrafted, as well as traditional varieties of Vermentino, Verdelho, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot, Grenache, Durif, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. Rhubarb and passionfruit wines are also made.

Wines can be purchased online or at the Stakehill Estate Winery cellar door, which is open from 10am-5pm daily.

The Packing Shed At Lawnbrook

Tucked away in the Bickley Valley, the Lawnbrook Estate and Packing Shed Restaurant provide arelaxed atmosphere with cellar-door sales and rustic home-cooked meals in picturesque surroundings.

Description

Ever since holding their wedding reception at the property 18 years ago, owning and running the Lawnbrook Estate and restaurant has been a long-held dream for Rebekah and Bruce Wilson. For the last year, they have been lovingly restoring the property, preparing their first vintage, and refining their menus. With an acre of vines on the 10 acre historic property, a variety of estate-grown wines are produced, and the Packing Shed @ Lawnbrook, the estate's boutique cafe, serves breakfast, lunch, homemade cakes and coffee. 

The Wines
Lawnbrook Estate is the wine brand associated with the Packing Shed Restaurant and the small vineyard set along Piesse Brook. While thefocus is on producing food-friendly wine for the restaurant, cellar door sales and tastings are also available. The varieties include Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir, Semillon Chardonnay, Classic White, Pinot Rose, Shiraz, Tempranillo and Shiraz Tempranillo. 

The Food
Specialising in all things handmade and local, the Packing Shed Restaurant will be serving up breakfast and lunch from Friday to Sunday each week. Food is prepared onsite using seasonal and local produce whenever possible, catering to various dietary requirements. In warmer months, guests are invited to bring a picnic blanket and enjoy one of the Shed's cheeseboards on the lawn.

Description

Stringybark Winery and Restaurant was established in 1985 and named after Stringybark Creek in North Eastern Victoria. In much earlier times, Stringybark Creek and Australian bushranger Ned Kelly became folklore following a shootout with Sgt. Kennedy and Constables Scanlon and Lonigan.

Only a 50 minute drive from Perth, this casual, family-friendly restaurant has a roaring log-fire and a range of traditional favourites on the menu, including pizzas, pastas and rustic home-style meals. 

The Wines
Stringybark vineyard is one of the oldest in the Chittering Valley and produces a limited quantity of hand-picked Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Verdelho grapes. This limited production combined with the special regional characteristics of the Chittering Valley helps to produce wines with intensity and distinctive varietal character.
