Description

Alon and Jodi Arbel purchased the property in 2003, building their winemaking facility in just three short months. Following a chance encounter, when James Halliday tasted their unnamed and unlabelled Shiraz, Bella Ridge Estate was born. (The winery needed a name to be printed for a national review in Halliday’s column in The Weekend Australian!)

The vines, planted in the 1960s, are almost entirely non-irrigated and crop levels are kept very low. Coupled with the vineyard's aspect on the foot hills of the Darling Range and the excellent gravelly loam soil, the result is grapes of excellent quality with highly concentrated fruit flavours.

The Wines

Focusing on warm climate varieties that are well suited to the region, the mostly hand-picked range includes Italian, Spanish and classic French styles made with a ‘non-commercial’ approach, where characterful wines are encouraged. Winemaking and bottling are completed within the estate. All wines can be purchased online.

Description

Black Swan Winery and Restaurant sits on a property formerly known as “Gidney’s Corner”.

Husband and wife team, Barry Scrivener and Robyn Meloury purchased Black Swan in 1998 and converted the property to a “restaurant within a winery”. The venue is purposely built for guests to capture fantastic views of vineyards, the Darling Ranges and adjacent rural surroundings. The design and building materials reflect a style and blend of rustic Australian ambience.

The vines were mostly planted in 1941, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Merlot, Chenin & Chardonnay and later, Shiraz. The first vintage in 2001 reaped gold medals for the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Cabernet Franc at the 2002 Swan Valley Wine Show.

The panoramic views of the Darling Ranges are matched only by the fresh, seasonal produce on the menu, offering freshly-baked bread served with truffle oil to a drool-worthy red wine-braised beef cheek and seasonal delights. Chef’s gardens are established throughout of the property, providing much of the kitchen’s needs for organic herbs.

Whether you decide to drop in to the cellar door or have lunch in the restaurant or alfresco sails area, everyone enjoys the lush vineyards, ancient gums, enchanting gardens and kid’s play area.

The Cellar door is open for tastings Thursday to Sunday and offers a wide variety of wines produced from the rich loamy soil on-site, including Chardonnay, Shiraz and Merlot. The Chenin and Viognier grapes are grown on the other side of the beautiful Susannah Brook. You can also enjoy estate-grown Olive Oil which is hand-picked, first pressed and organic.

Carilley Estate is managed by the award-winning Spices Group and is a popular venue for weddings and events. Outdoor events hosted in the alfresco area and the gardens, vineyards and olive groves make for an ideal setting for wedding ceremonies and photographs.

Corymbia is the deep-rooted, far-sighted vision of husband-and wife-team, Rob and Genevieve Mann. The Mann name is synonymous with Western Australia’s Swan Valley, where Rob’s pioneering grandfather Jack worked a remarkable 51 consecutive vintages for Houghton. Rob was just a boy when he joined his father - former Australian test cricketer Tony - in planting the vines on what is now the dry-grown, organically farmed Corymbia vineyard. 
After building an exceptional reputation in their own right, the couple kicked off their homecoming dream, Corymbia, with the 2013 vintage, during Rob’s tenure as estate director at Newton Vineyard in Napa Valley. Darlington's award winning restaurant is known for its attractive a la carte menu, reflecting a combination of Australian and European influences. Faber is Latin for a smith, a craftsman, an artisan who is skilled and ingenious. Owners John Griffiths and Jane Micallef founded the vineyard with a mission to grow regionally distinctive grapes and craft wines that are rich and flavoursome. They are true believers in the tradition of wine making, that wine should be inspired, crafted with a sense of creating something distinctive and authentic,

The wines are crafted with the belief that wine should taste of grapes and rely on purity of fruit flavour and delicious fruit characters to drive their wines, and that weight and fullness should come from ripeness, an extension of flavour, not simply more tannin or more acid. They want their wines to ‘sing of their origins’ and highlight the fruit from which the wine is made, not disguise it, and result in wines that are fresh and appealing with great drinkability.

Priding themselves on being extremely exclusive, the cellar door offers unique sit-down style tasting sessions with share platters and plenty of time to chat.

Themed events are also very popular including Harvest Breakfast, Reserve Release Dinner, Winter Benchmark Tasting, Bring Your Favourite Bottle, Spring Long Table Lunch and Xmas BBQ.
Faber Vineyards also caters for weddings, seminars, cocktail parties and large sit-down dinners.

Fig Tree Estate Winery

Proudly family owned and operated by the Jenkins family, the winery commenced with plantings of Verdelho, Shiraz and Grenache varieties in 2010. The estate grows and sources fruit locally, specialising in small lot, traditionally made wines that are handcrafted and full of unique character.

The Wines

Varieties include Sparkling Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Shiraz Grenache, Cabernet Shiraz, Merlot and Shiraz Liqueur. Swan Valley Apple Ciders are also produced.

Cellar Door

Enjoy a platter and a generous wine tasting at this small and intimate venue whilst having a chat with the estate's friendly winemaker at this cellar door, which opened in 2014. When the 100 year old fig tree is fruiting (February and March), tasting plates have a unique fig theme and flavour that is not to be missed! Open Thursday and Friday 11:30am - 4pm and weekends 11am - 4:30pm.

The Food

Fig Tree Estate Winery serves light lunches, woodfired pizzas and platters on weekends, featuring fresh cheeses, fruits and local produce from the area. Open Saturday and Sunday 11am - 4:30pm.

 

Garbin Estate Wines

Established in 1956, this charming family-run winery and cellar door produces boutique reds, whites and rich fortifieds, but their speciality is bottle-fermented “methode traditionelle” sparkling.

Description

The family-owned wineries of the Swan Valley often include a fascinating history and personal flavour, and Garbin is no exception. Winemaker Peter Garbin (son of founder Duje Garbin), wife Katrina and sons Joel and Adam have a philosophy of hands-on premium winemaking coupled with personal service.

Their wines include award-winning premium boutique red and white wines as well as rich, traditional fortified styles for which the Swan Valley is well renowned, some of which are only available at the cellar door. Their speciality is bottle-fermented “methode traditionelle” sparkling styles made from chardonnay and, more unusually, semillon, chenin blanc, shiraz and merlot. The fruit is sourced from estate vineyards in Gingin and the Swan Valley and grown with low chemical inputs and no pesticides.

The cellar door is low key, charming and spacious with a lovely outside area for warmer days and open 11am to 5:30pm 7 days a week.

HISTORY

Duje Garbin, founder of Garbin Estate, learnt his winemaking craft in between fishing on a small island in the Adriatic Sea. It was basic stuff, but ideally suited to the family needs. As a migrant to Western Australia in 1937, he saved his money and purchased a property at Millendon in the Swan Valley, then Middle Swan in 1956. The Garbin business was built up on bulk wine, some 2000-3000 gallons a year, delivered around the suburbs or purchased by customers visiting the property. Upon retiring Duje’s son, Peter, took over Garbin Estate Wines (GEW). Over the last 20 years, GEW has undergone a massive transition including a new cellar door and processing area, upgraded major plant and equipment and established a vineyard in Gingin, 90 minutes from Perth CBD.

Harris Organic Wines is an extremely friendly place. Make your way past the cat and free-range chickens to the cellar door of this small boutique winery and you can enjoy a seated tasting of organic wines with winemaker and owner Duncan Harris (a $15.00 tasting fee applies, redeemable against any wine purchases).

Sustainability is central to Harris Organic’s philosophy. The award winning certified organic wines are made with natural yeasts and the bare minimum of additives and preservatives. The grapes are irrigated only by what they receive from the sky and Duncan never uses any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers.

Minimal artificial energy sources are required. An underground cellar was built to obtain naturally cooler storage temperatures. The wines mature in oak barriques and hogsheads, ultimately sealed in recyclable glass bottles. Returned Harris Organic bottles receive a $1 refund per bottle.

You can learn how organic wine is made with a guided walking tour through the vineyard, underground cellar and winery, finishing with a taste of some of the very best of  Duncan's certified organic dry white, red and fortified wines. Duncan is also licensed to distil spirits and sells his organic vodka and brandy's at the cellar door and online. 

Henley Park Winery

In the Swan Valley, about 10km from Midland. An international affair - run by Danes Claus and Lisbet Petersen, who use South African yeasts and Hungarian oak to produce their wines.

Description

Henley Park Wines was established by the Yujnovich family in 1935, and purchased by Hans Buchart Petersen ù a former Danish politician and vice-consul to WA ù in 1986. Claus, Hans' son, and wife Lisbet have since become principals, moving from Denmark and producing a range of wines ù Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Muscat, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot. About 2000 cases of mainly Shiraz are exported to the Petersen's homeland each year with a Tawny Port, made from Portugese grape varieties, also produced annually. Cafe-style meals are available Friday to Sunday.

Highway Wines

The last of the old-style Swan Valley wineries, crushing 100+ tonnes of fruit, producing 20 different styles of fortified wines sold by the bottle, in flagons and fill-your-own 2-litre containers.

Description

Established in 1954 by migrant Tony Bakranich, a self-taught winemaker, ownership has since passed to Velko and Helen Bakranich, the next generation of the family. Thankfully, nothing much has changed over the years.

James Halliday notes Highway Wines as “A survivor of another era, when literally dozens of such wineries plied their business in the Swan Valley”. Over 10.5 hectares of land producing over 100 tonnes of fruit each year. Vintage Port is the most popular but they produce about 20 types including ports, muscat, tokay and sherries. Some of the wine is sold in bottles but the majority is sold in two-litre flagons and those who want to bring their own containers. Vintage port is the most popular drop in Highway's fortified range and all the grapes come from the 10.5 hectare vineyard, which produces more than 100 tonnes of fruit each year.

Sales are made through the cellar door; open by appointment only.

Description

Jarrah Ridge was established in 1996 and the cellar door built in 2006. It is extremely relaxing, giving you the chance to enjoy some of the culinary delights of the valley, along with the full range of current release wines and some older vintages.

Owners Mark Morton and Jimmy Wong carefully source their grapes from around the state, creating world-class full-bodied reds, rich zinfandel, exotic "ice wine" and liqueur, amazing sparkling and intensely perfumed whites full of regional and varietal characters.

Jarrah Ridge recently won the "Best Small Winery" Trophy and the "Best 2016 Shiraz" Class 13, Gold Medal which enabled the pair to clinch the big "Alan Dineen Memorial" trophy at the Swan Valley Wine Show 2017.

John Kosovich Wines

Just up Great Northern Highway from Twin Hill Wines, about 11km from Midland. Winner of many awards including a 1995 gold medal, won in Croatia for a Swan Valley Chardonnay.

Description

Established in 1922 by Ivan Kosovich, John Kosovich Wines is one of the oldest wineries in Western Australia.  At age 15, Ivan's son John took on the role as winemaker and expanded the varieties available. In 1998 Anthony (Arch) became the third generation senior winemaker working alongside his father. The tasting area is located in a unique below ground cellar which was hand dug in 1922. The winery continues to be a family run, boutique winery which prides itself on quality estate grown wines.

Located on the banks of the Swan River only 20 minutes from Perth, Lancaster Wines boasts some of the oldest vines in the Swan Valley and is owned and operated by Carl and Jackie Lancaster. The wines made include Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Rose, Cabernet Merlot, Liqueur Muscat, an acclaimed Old Vines Shiraz and a dessert wine - Late Picked Chenin.

The Lancaster Wines experience is centred around their tasting shed, a rustic bar offering complimentary wine tastings  and local cheese platters can be enjoyed in a casual, friendly and relaxed atmosphere, daily from 10am - 5pm.

Description

When Naum Trandos first planted his vineyard in the rich soils of Pozdivishte, Macedonia, his best friend, his Little Black Dog, was by his side. Together they planted, harvested, bottled and delivered wine across the town.

Today, passed down through the Trandos family, the Little Black Dog vineyard is situated in the beautiful Swan Valley region. All wine is made with handpicked grapes, rich with distinct, fruit-driven flavours, picked from estate-grown vines that are over 30 years old. Being a boutique winery, the family hand-select only the best grapes from their vineyard to make the Little Black Dog wines, selling the balance. All production, from grape to bottle, takes place at the winery.

The Wines

Fourteen different grape varieties are grown in the vineyard, and the wines made include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Chardonnay Semillon, Sparkling Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Rose, Merlot, Liqueur Shiraz, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Liqueur Chardonnay Verdelho.

Description

Centuries of French tradition has been combined with WA’s rich soil to create a little piece of France right in the heart of the Swan Valley.  

Little River Winery prides itself on quality over quantity, producing wines with flavour and finesse using traditional French winemaking methods, no pesticides and minimum preservatives. The yield is lower due to the vineyard being non-irrigated, producing a higher concentration of flavour in smaller batches.

Alongside Little River Winery is the Little River Café, in which guests can accompany fine French wine with authentic French-inspired mouth-watering meals. Neira and Lucy have constructed a menu packed full of both light nibbles and hearty dishes for a delicious, unforgettable lunch. Relax in the charming, cosy café or overlook the luscious vineyard in the small but sweet courtyard. 

The unique and rustic winery also offers a beautiful, intimate setting for private, evening functions. Be wined and dined alongside the vineyard while taking in the ambience of the scenic Swan Valley.

Lunches are available every day except Wednesday and Thursday, from 12.00 pm - 4.00 pm weekdays and 12.00 pm - 5.00 pm weekends. Evening functions can also be booked.

THE BORDEAUX WAY

Grapes are carefully hand harvested and crushed immediately, then pressed in a traditional basket press. The juice is settled for debourdage at 2°C. for at least forty eight hours. Fermentation takes place at a constant 15° C with a secret selection of yeast strain added for each wine. No sulphur dioxide is used until after the fermentation is completed.

Chardonnay, Viognier and Marsanne are never wooded, but are kept on the fine lees, after a first racking, for several months. Noble Classic undergo a subtle wood aging for a short period.White Wines are usually bottled after eight months.

Vatting of the reds varies from year to year but is never less than two weeks and can be for up to a month. After vatting a light pressing is done after which the wine settles and undergoes malolactic fermentation in closed stainless steel tanks at between 15° and 18°C.

After a month or so the wines are transferred into French oak barrique for between fifteen and twenty four months.

Description

The Nesci family first chose this valley in 1948, carving their place by hand from virgin bush. The soils of the Valley are predominantly sandy brown over clay, and as the climate is typically Mediterranean with wet winters and dry summers, ideal grape growing conditions are abundant. Additionally, the underground spring running through the estate feeds water to the vines throughout the year, ensuring the vines never suffer drought and produce consistent harvests of full flavoured grapes.

Varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Pedro Ximinez. Wine can be purchased at the estate or online, with some wines exported too. 

Cellar Door

Nesci Estate Wine Farm's stone and timber cellar door is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm-5pm, where tastings or glasses of wine can be enjoyed with woodfired pizzas and live music on the lawn.

Description

The Olive Farm property dates back to 1829 and was established by an English botanist named Thomas Waters who brought grapevine cuttings and olive trees with him when he settled in Perth. He planted the olive trees first, hence the name, but wine was soon produced, with the first vintage in 1834. (Much of which became currency for bartering with the local shopkeepers!)

In 1933, Ivan Yurisich purchased the property. He had immigrated from Yugoslavia at the turn of the century and after working in the Goldfields and outback of WA, decided to try his hand at winemaking. The property has remained in the family for four generations.

The Wines
Historically, The Olive Farm made fortified wines which were sold by the cask to the Goldfields in Western Australia. The winery become one of the first in WA to produce Traditional Method Sparkling wines back in the 1960s. These remain a core of range which is now named ‘Olivine’.

Still table wines were introduced in the 1970s and achieved great success in the local wine shows. The current range is diverse, with over 35 sweet to dry white, red, sparkling and fortified wines. There are all the Swan Valley classics, along with some other surprise varieties like Tempranillo, Traminer, Durif and Cabernet Franc.

Wine Tasting
The Yurisich family built their ‘dream’ winery and cellar door in 2007. It is set on a 24-acre property in the heart of the Swan Valley and has received significant awards for its architecture and interior design. Visitors are welcome to sample from the full range of wines, with tastings available 10am – 5pm daily. A walking tour of the vineyard and winery can be booked in advance, it begins at 10.30am.

Unique Highlights: The Cheese
Taste and graze from a selection of over 75+ different international and local benchmark cheeses at the family’s Cheese Barrel Café. Just metres from the cellar door, this architecturally-designed gem of a property is a place of wine and cheese-lovers’ dreams. The all-day menu is both flexible and generous, with cheeseboards starting from $35-$40. Free cheese tastings are available too. They are best experienced between 10am and 1pm before it gets too busy. Families, children and even dogs are welcome.

The Cheese Barrel Café is open 10am – 5pm Monday and Tuesday, and 10am-5pm Wednesday to Sunday.

Established in 2008 by Martin Buck and Loraine Donlevy, Pandemonium Estate is a small wine producer located in the heart of the Swan Valley wine region. Spanish varieties Pedro Ximenez and Grenache are the great passion of the winery, while well-known Swan Valley varieties Chenin Blanc, Moscato and Shiraz are also made. The eleven-hectare vineyard is sustainably managed with minimal chemical input; utilising tough lateritic soils and warm summer breezes to produce fully-formed fruit flavours.

Cellar Door

The Pandemonium cellar door is designed around some of the oldest vines on the property and offers tastings of the full wine range as well as wine by the glass or bottle which can be enjoyed alongside views of the Darling Ranges. Vineyard platters, cheese and tapas are also available. The cellar door is open weekends and public holidays 11am - 5pm.

Defined as Sicilian passion with an Australian twist, Paul Conti wines was once a family home to eight children and is now a modern winery with restaurant.

Located only 30 minutes north of Perth, the Woodvale property is an oasis of fruit and olive trees, manicured gardens and stunning rose bushes among the ever-expanding urban sprawl, a special retreat from the every-day grind.

CELLAR DOOR

The cellar door is located below the oasis of fruit, olive trees and manicured gardens, enveloped in the scents of oak barrels and fermenting wine. The below ground cellar door features all Paul Conti products plus exclusives to the cellar door. Visitors are welcome to sit outdoors in the alfresco area which hosts quarterly events with the opportunity to try the full wine range. Cheese and charcuterie platters are also available in the veranda area but must be advised in advance. The Cellar door is open Monday to Saturday 11am to 5pm.

RESTAURANT

Conti’s Restaurant has been consistently nominated as one of the State’s ‘Best Restaurants at a Winery’ since 1998.

Originally built in 1928 as the original family home that Paul shared with his parents and seven siblings, in 1982 the home was renovated into the fine dining restaurant, with high ceilings, original antique fixtures and jarrah floor boards.

A regular haunt for local clientele, The roomy layout, high ceilings and forgiving stone walls cool during the summer, while the pot-belly fire and cosy entrance lounge makes the restaurant equally popular in winter,

The menu has a local-produce focus including fresh oysters, roast duck breast, garlic prawns, carpet-bag steak and succulent veal rib-eye.

The restaurant is only open Friday for lunch, and Wednesday though to Saturday for dinner. The restaurant is also popular for intimate wedding celebrations, anniversaries, birthdays and business luncheons.

HISTORY

From humble beginnings in 1948, Paul Conti Wines has become one of WA’s most reputable and respected boutique, family-owned wineries.

Before it was a winery, in 1927 the Woodvale property was home to the Conti family who lived their self-sufficient lifestyle of growing vegetables, making pasta, cheese and milk from the resident cow to nurturing vines to create wine. In the 1940’s Carmelo Conti begun planting vines to expand to a modest sized vineyard whereby the cellar was located underneath the family house, dug out by the Conti brothers, still existing today.

From 1968 Carmelo’s son Paul began upgrading the small winery to a larger more premium winery where early success was achieved with the Shiraz. The wines to this day are still created with some of the original vines planted on the property.

An integral part of the Peel Region for over 40 years, the first vines at Peel Estate were planted in 1973. Owned and operated by Will Nairn, the winery features 12 acres of vines, and its unique coastal limestone soils and high-water table provide ideal viticulture conditions. Wines at Peel Estate are made onsite in the original architect-designed colonial style brick and timber winery, that visitors can observe from the rustic mezzanine tasting area. The winery Is surrounded by magnificent Tuart trees.

The Wines

Established in 1973 by Will Nairn, Shiraz was the first variety planted followed by Chenin Blanc and Zinfandel in 1976 and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1979. Today, the extensive range also includes Verdelho, Chardonnay, Rose, Sparkling and Fortifieds.

Cellar Door

Open daily from 10am-5pm, enjoy a wine tasting in the charming, rustic cellar door that overlooks the winemaking floor. Bring along a picnic and enjoy your favourite Peel Estate wine in the beautiful picnic grounds under the Tuart trees. During harvest in late-summer, lucky visitors may get to see grapes being crushed and pressed along with red wines fermenting.

HISTORY

Pinelli Wines was established in the Swan Valley in 1980 by Domenic and Iolanda Pinelli. Having emigrated to Australia from the Molise region of Italy in the mid 1950's, they shared a vision to create a family winery incorporating their Italian heritage, which recognised that good wine needed to be a part of every dining experience.
Domenic gained invaluable experience working for over twenty years with the iconic Western Australian producer of the 1960s, Waldeck Wines, and purchased what he referred to as "the pick of the vineyards of the area" - a 7 acre block in Caversham, Western Australia.

Domenic and Iolanda shared the knowledge and joy of winemaking with their sons Robert and Daniel, ensuring that the winery would continue to grow with future generations. A simple philosophy of ensuring exceptional quality from the vineyard to the glass has meant that from humble beginnings some three decades ago, Pinelli's has now grown to become a second-generation family winery producing around 150,000 litres of wine each year.

Description

Don Riseborough and Susan Lamp began developing their 8-hectare vineyard nearby the Moondah Brook in 1998. The wines are made from grapes grown in Gingin which are known for their maximum flavour and are made by the winemakers at Flying Fish Cove in Margaret River.

Varieties include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Grenache. A small selection of non-estate white wines (Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Verdelho) are made by Rob Marshall in the Swan Valley.

Cellar Door

The spacious, contemporary cellar door is located on a hilltop, offering vast views across the valleys of Gingin. Complimentary wine tastings are available, as is the option to bring your own picnic and take full advantage of the beautiful landscape. Open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am - 4pm.

Unique Highlights

Riseborough Estate is part of the Chittering Valley Wine Trail, as well as the Astronomers Abbots and Artists Trail. Additionally, a Fine Art Gallery has been established upstairs with interesting contemporary exhibitions on display. The cellar door gift shop also stocks a range of wonderful local specialties such as cheeses, olives, oils, tapenade and dukkah.

RESTAURANT

Take the time to enjoy a superb lunch at the restaurant, winner of several gold plate awards. Architecturally designed and rustic in style with wide verandahs and large expanses of manicured lawns provide plenty of space to slow down and unwind while taking in the beautiful vineyard and stunning surrounds. The menu changes regularly to incorporate the best seasonal foods and where possible, local, organically grown produce.

WEDDINGS / EVENTS

Riverbank holds a range of public events, all listed on their website.

The estate is also popular for weddings and events, with a dedicated coordinator able to arrange stunning events at the restaurant, on the lawns or even a marquee for hire, all of which enjoy 180 degree, panoramic views towards the Swan River and the historical landmark of Woodbridge House.

Tastings are available daily between 10am and 4pm. 
Our Restaurant is open between 11:30am and 3pm, and is also open on Sundays for breakfast from 7:30am to 10:30am.
