Description

As Kalamunda locals, Dennis and Carline Humphrey are no strangers to the terrain of the Perth Hills. With encouragement from local wine guru Peter Fimmel, Chardonnay and Semillon varieties were first planted in 1998 on the famous Red Gum soil high on the western ridge of the Bickley Valley.

The Wines

Carldenn Homestead Wines offer an expansive variety of reds, whites and sparkling wines designed to appeal to any palette. Each vintage has a unique character with different complexities, from the fresh fruit and creamy finish of the unwooded Chardonnay to the full-bodied, bold and delicious Shiraz.

Cellar Door

Located amongst the bushland of Walliston, Carldenn Homestead's cellar door includes an open bar and picnic area with handcrafted jarrah tables made by Dennis himself. After eating and drinking, you are free to wander amongst the vines.

The Wine

Sparkling through to table wines, dessert wines and fortified wines are made, embodying the Swan Valley’s style of zesty, fruit-driven whites and warm, spicy reds. Varieties include Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Muscat, old-vine Shiraz and Muscadelle.

Edgecombe Brothers Winery’s rustic cellar door is ably managed by Alfred Edgecombe, who welcomes all for a chat and a wine tasting, open daily.

The Food

The family-friendly café is open for breakfast and lunch, and particularly famous for its weekend brunch, made with scrumptious farm-fresh produce served with a relaxed winery atmosphere on the lawn or under the pergolas overlooking the vineyards. Open Monday to Thursday 10am - 4pm, Friday 10am - 5pm and weekends 9am - 5pm. Weekend bookings recommended.

Unique Highlights

Description

Nestled in Jarrah forest on the Darling Scarp at an elevation of 400 metres, Hainault is the highest vineyard in Western Australia, and is in one of the coldest parts of the State. The 17 acre property was replanted as a vineyard in 1978 by Peter Fimmel, one of the pioneers of the then infant Perth Hills Wine Region.

Owners Michael and Lyn Sykes purchased the vineyard in 2002, with an objective to produce premium quality varietal wines whilst further developing a style synonymous with the Perth Hills. The couple's relationship with the environment is signified in Hainault's logo of a Boobook owl, an animal native to the area, and viticulture and land management practices reflect their commitment to sustainability. Hainault also prides itself on being pet friendly, and it's common to see the Sykes family Kelpies at their cellar door.

The Wines

All Hainault wines are made from estate grown, hand harvested fruit using minimal interventions. Among an extensive range, Hainault produces a traditional method Sparkling Pinot Noir, Semillon, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Rose, Cabernet Merlot Blend, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cellar Door

Wine tastings and cellar sales are available Friday 11.30-3pm, Saturday and Sunday from 11.30-4 pm.

Coffee and home made cakes are also available from the cellar door MOST days.

Jadran was established in 1914 by Vladimir (Wally) Radojkovich, who purchased 22 acres of land with a desire to establish a vineyard and create a winery. Since then, Jadran Wines has welcomed many generations of family members to the vineyard; most recently, Wally's grandson Paul in 1990. Jadran incorporates traditional and modern winemaking methods to create a distinctive character in the winery's expansive range which is made from fruit sourced locally and from the Western Australia's south-west. With a creative approach to winemaking, Jadran has won many medals in Wine Shows all over Australia.

Located on the banks of the Swan River only 20 minutes from Perth, Lancaster Wines boasts some of the oldest vines in the Swan Valley and is owned and operated by Carl and Jackie Lancaster. The wines made include Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Rose, Cabernet Merlot, Liqueur Muscat, an acclaimed Old Vines Shiraz and a dessert wine - Late Picked Chenin.

The Lancaster Wines experience is centred around their tasting shed, a rustic bar offering complimentary wine tastings  and local cheese platters can be enjoyed in a casual, friendly and relaxed atmosphere, daily from 10am - 5pm.

Group tastings can be booked in advance which include delicious vineyard platters, served amidst the property’s precious old shiraz vines.

Settled by John Septimus Roe soon after the establishment of the Swan River Colony, Mandoon Estate has significant heritage. In the language of the local aboriginals, it means “place of many trees.”

The picturesque ground is complete with a kid’s play area and gallery located in the property’s original homestead, cellar door, microbrewery and varied eating facilities, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists looking to unwind.

In the words of Sir James Stirling: “The richness of the soil, the bright foliage of the shrubs, the majesty of the surrounding trees, the abrupt and red coloured banks of the River occasionally seen, and the view of the blue summits of the mountains from which we were not far distant, made the scenery around this spot as beautiful as anything or kind I had ever witnessed.”

THE WINES

A block of Verdelho was first planted in 1895 and still produces grapes today, make it one of the oldest commercially used vineyards in Western Australia.

The winery has only been producing wine since 2010, all of which can be enjoyed at the award-winning cellar door. The focus is on creating a boutique range of premium wines from well-preserved low-yielding vineyards in the Swan Valley and other regions. Varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Verdelho, Riesling, Chardonnay, Grenache, Cabernet, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz.

THE FOOD

Executive chef Michael Hartnell oversees the fine dining restaurant offering a modern Australian menu. For a more casual experience there’s an outdoor deli and bar offering pizza, roast meat on the spit and gourmet sausages, all located next to the children’s playground and gallery.

THE ‘HOMESTEAD’ MICROBREWERY

The ‘Homestead’ microbrewery remains the only brewery of its kind in Australia, using German manufactured Schulz brewing equipment to produce unique craft ales and cider.

HISTORY

Pinelli Wines was established in the Swan Valley in 1980 by Domenic and Iolanda Pinelli. Having emigrated to Australia from the Molise region of Italy in the mid 1950's, they shared a vision to create a family winery incorporating their Italian heritage, which recognised that good wine needed to be a part of every dining experience.
Domenic gained invaluable experience working for over twenty years with the iconic Western Australian producer of the 1960s, Waldeck Wines, and purchased what he referred to as "the pick of the vineyards of the area" - a 7 acre block in Caversham, Western Australia.

Domenic and Iolanda shared the knowledge and joy of winemaking with their sons Robert and Daniel, ensuring that the winery would continue to grow with future generations. A simple philosophy of ensuring exceptional quality from the vineyard to the glass has meant that from humble beginnings some three decades ago, Pinelli's has now grown to become a second-generation family winery producing around 150,000 litres of wine each year.

Description

The name ‘Polguern’ is a heartfelt tribute to John and Sylwia Rower countries of origin. Sylwia was born in Poland, and John in Guernsey, Channel Islands and purchased the property in 2012.

Polguern Estate is home to two vineyards growing Cabernet Sauvignon and the Merlot. Originally planted in 1990, the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard at Polguern contains 1700 vines and is believed to be the oldest in the region. The strict pruning regime and dry growing technique reduces the yield to less than five tonnes per year, far less than the average vineyard of its size. Dry growing results in smaller grapes with a higher skin to juice ratio, producing a wine of greater complexity on the palate. Conversely, the Merlot vineyard was planted in 2008 and consists of approximately 500 vines. Less rigorous pruning is applied to these vines, and approximately three tonnes of fruit are produced annually.

Our Wines
The Estate’s flagship wine, “Pharoah’s Tribute”, is a product of the winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The Merlot grapes are used to produce a French Provence-style dry rose, Merlot-Cabernet blend and a Solero Port.

Description

Sandalford has been making superb West Australian wines for over 175 years. The primary property is the grand Swan Valley estate and offers an array of tours, courses and food & wine experiences. There is also the cellar in Margaret River, surrounded by beautiful, country gardens, vines and native forest.

A Notable History
Sandalford was established in 1840 in the early days of the Perth colony’s settlement. The property was granted to WA’s first Surveyor General John Septimus Roe by Queen Victoria, to honour his 57 years of Service to the Commonwealth. He named it Sandalford after a priory in his original home of Birkshire, England.

The property had a diverse agricultural history and originally thrived growing table grapes, which became a lucrative export. Winemaking accelerated after World War II with a growing community of Croatian and Italian migrants bringing their extensive knowledge and wine-making techniques to the young Swan Valley wine industry. In 1970 the Roe family expanded to Margaret River, planting a vineyard on prime land in Wilyabrup.

In 1990, Sandalford was acquired by the Prendiville family, who own a portfolio of iconic tourism and hospitality establishments around WA. The Prendiville’s have invested significantly in the brand, the wines and the impressive estate.

The Wines
Sandalford makes five ranges of wines from its vineyards in the Swan Valley and Margaret River. There are over 25 wines, including sparkling, red, white, dessert and fortified wines. The winery incorporates the state-of-the-art-technology, while retaining winemaking traditions, such as small batch fruit processing and using the best quality French and American oak.

Wine Tasting
The entire Sandalford wine range (and often other special wines) can be tasted at their Swan Valley and Margaret River estates. The grand Swan Valley cellar door is one of the largest in Western Australia and is open daily from 10am to 5pm.

Perth’s Famous Wine Cruise with Captain Cook Cruises is the ultimate way to reach our vineyard.  Cruise into the picturesque upper reaches of the Swan Valley as you sample fine wines from the Swan Valley before disembarking at Sandalford Estate’s private jetty for an exclusive behind the scenes tour, video presentation and Flight of Wines wine tasting. A gourmet 2 course lunch is presented onsite before a dessert buffet and afternoon tea is served back on board the vessel. Live entertainment follows as you enjoy complimentary wine on the return cruise.

The Restaurant
The multi-award-winning Restaurant has a rustic ambience of limestone, wood and a grand open fireplace, and alfresco encased by 125-year-old vines and vast vineyard views. The a la carte menu showcases fresh regional produce sourced from around WA, including Abrohlos Island Scallops, Rottnest Island Tuna, Cone Bay Barramundi, Linley Valley Lamb and Blackwood Valley Beef. Look out for a special selection of rare museum wines that can be enjoyed with meals. Open daily for lunch from midday.

Unique Highlights
Sandalford’s Winemaker Apprenticeship takes place on Saturdays and is another once-in-a-lifetime experience. A winery tour teaches the theory to prepare for the practical exam of wine blending. It’s the chance to get creative and make your own original WA wine. The process is endlessly entertaining and informative too. Sandalford experts judge all of the blends, then the whole tour group get to share them over lunch.

The Laughin' Barrel (renamed under new ownership in 2010), is a casual winery and restaurant in the heart of the Swan Valley wine region. Owners Brian and Sharon have been in hospitality for 20 years. The business name reflects their aim to bring fun and laughter to the Valley.

The Wines

Varieties include Sparkling Chardonnay, Classic White, Chenin, Chardonnay, Rose, Classic Red, Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tawny Port and Muscat. All wines can be tasted at the estate's cellar door alongside gourmet cheese platters from 10am - 5pm Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and 10am - 10pm on Friday.

The Food

The menu offers a changing array of hearty seasonal fare including homemade pies, fresh fish, local calamari and gourmet pizzas. The cafe area also features a large playground and lawn, along with a paved alfresco dining area overlooking 12 acres of picturesque vines. Description

The History
Windy Creek Estate, formally Cobanov Wines, was first established in 1937 by Ante Cobanov. 
He had left Croatia in 1924 and spent 13 years cutting sleepers in the south-west to enable him to put a deposit on this Swan Valley property that he purchased in 1937. They grew grapes for dried fruit production but made a small amount of wine for the Perth immigrant community.  
The family has continued to produce wines for more than 80 years and we have been selling fruit to other wineries for approximately 40 years. The Windy Creek Estate label was first released in 1980. 
Tony Cobanov, the current winemaker, entered the industry as a third generation winemaker and is very passionate about the Swan Valley and its lifestyle. He has 3 sons Joshua, Callum and Rohan so it is a distinct possibility that this will become a 4th generation business.
 
The Wines
The winery employs modern and traditional wine making techniques producing white styles that are crisp and friendly showing big tropical fruit and finishing with a nice mouth feel. 
The reds are full bodied and have an earthy, savoury aroma with full fruit and well-balanced tannin.
Their fortified wines are old, rich and luscious with good oak.
 
The Cellar Door
Windy Creek has recently upgraded its Cellar Door and now has ample lawn areas that are perfect for a lazy afternoon with friends and family with the Darling Range and vineyard as a backdrop.
