The George Jones Child Advocacy Centre is the first of its kind in Australia.
- Type:Local Focus
- Charity:Youth Welfare
Our child focused services provide holistic care to meet the needs of each child and family with compassion, understanding and skill; and to strengthen our community's response to the safety, treatment and wellbeing of children who have suffered trauma from abuse.
The George Jones Child Advocacy Centre was opened on Tuesday 1st March by the Honorable Colin Barnett, Premier of Western Australia. It was a celebration of innovation and success for Parkerville Children and Youth Care, local agencies and government partners who began in 2007 to design, develop and implement this new service for children and young people who have been harmed.Right from the beginning of the George Jones Child Advocacy Centre we have involved children and young people in planning and designing the building and choosing the art work inside the centre. They told us they wanted bright and friendly spaces, colourful murals with lots of creatures, bugs and water.
Involving young people was again very important in our latest project, the urban art for the long exterior wall of the building. Artists Darren Hutchens, Dan Duggan and Lawry Halden facilitated workshops with young people, encouraged their ideas and harnessed these into a cohesive and creative design. The dragon represents Parkerville, a strong creature who supports and guides children and helps them to go on a journey of recovery from hurt and harm; the children are in charge and tell the dragon how to help them. The budding young artists named the dragon Parky which is how the kids colloquially refer to us.
The Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers' Centre is the oldest writers' centre of its kind in Australia.
- Arts:Writers Centre,Literature
The Centre is located in Greenmount, in the former home of Katharine Susannah Prichard, author of Coonardoo, Working Bullocks and The Goldfields Trilogy.
The Centre encourages and facilitates writers' readings, workshops, writers in residence and other services, all designed to help and encourage writers at all levels of the craft. A unique feature is its location in the nationally heritage listed home of Katharine Susannah Prichard, one of Australia's most gifted writers, and of Hugo Throssell a VC from the Australian Light Horse at Gallipoli.
At KSP, we offer an exciting Young Writers' program, Skills Workshops, Literary Dinners and Author Talks for the public, Open Days, book sales at Shire festivals and Historical tours. KSP has a sound recording program and runs the national Write-a-Book-in-a-Day for teams writing books and raising money for children's hospitals. Everyone is welcome to join our activities.
The ambience of the Centre is excellent for creativity and inspiration. 20-60,000 words are frequently achieved by our Writers in Residence in a four week stay, in between enjoying the interaction with local writers.

Our core business remains our response to the “high needs child”. Many of these children and youth have suffered chronic histories of multiple abuse and display a range of trauma-related behaviours.
Out of Home Care for children and youth will always remain our core business, however, Parkerville Children and Youth Care today also offers valuable outreach services and programmes to the wider community for children, youth and families in need. For more details on these programmes please visit the programme section within this website.
Our programmes are designed to be outcome focused for the children and youth for whom we provide care. There is an emphasis on individualised care plans to meet the needs of each and every child or young person.
