"I use a range of media, oil sticks, pastels, acrylic and oil paints and paper mache sculpture. My first love is oil sticks and pastels. I use these in my emotional landscapes. These drawings use blending, rhythm and harmonious balance to show you what I feel when I capture a moment in the scenery around me. They evoke rather than provoke, allowing you to to be embraced by the emotion of the moment."

Britta Sorensen

Description

Beach-combing on a remote Far Northern section of The Great Barrier Reef, gave me opportunity to take a special photo that has now made its way into my artwork.

It was the catalyst to commence a marine inspired theme called “overboard”. A small cottage in Margaret River has been in the process of renovation during the past 12 months and an art studio has emerged. I now have a home for my artworks and space to paint in a pretty little piece of Margaret River.

Chloe Wilder

Chloe Wilder is yet another Margaret River blow in from a small and extraordinarily exotic country off the East Coast of Australia.

  • Open Days/times:BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
  • Galleries:Drawing,Painting,Mixed Media,Print Making,Artist Studio

Details

  • Open Days:By Appointment Only

Description

Chloe's current body of work puts a focus on the modern female portrait. In her large scale oil paintings, Chloe attempts to connect with women who display an air of strength and hunts down faces on social media.

It seems a tad odd of her to paint people she doesn’t know and to expect you to be impressed by her renditions of those who mean squat to you, but that is the whole point. What inspires a painter? Can you communicate a feeling? Is it the same feeling for everyone? What is the connection between the artist and the muse? How is that connection forged between people sometimes on opposite sides of the world? What even is a portrait in the era of selfie culture?

Christine Cresswell

Influenced by her grandmother - a keen gardener, plant lover and painter of wildflowers - Christine has created a collection of botanical watercolours of both exotic and native plants of her area.

Description

Christine has always been a keen gardener and in the last ten years has developed an interest in painting the plants that she finds in her garden. Having undertaken the Master Gardener course at Burnley in Melbourne and Botanical Illustration courses at the Royal Botanic Gardens, her special interest lies in capturing, in complete detail, the characteristics of the plants that she is painting. In addition, she likes to draw the plants at different stages of seasonal development as they go from bud to flower to seed.

Christopher Young

Being a traveller from a young age, isolation has become a recurring theme in Christopher's art work.

  • Open Days/times:BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
  • Represented Artists:Christopher Young
  • Galleries:Installation,Photography

Details

  • Open Days:By Appointment Only

Description

Christopher Young was born in small-town New Zealand in the mid-seventies. After finishing his studies, he moved to Germany in 1996 before settling in Western Australia in 2002.

Isolation is a recurring theme in his life and work – the remoteness of growing up in semi-rural New Zealand, the loneliness of living in Germany as a poor German speaker and lately the geographic and ideological seclusion of life in Australia, have all coloured his artistic practice.

Context, coding in images and a lack of a personal cultural library have been central themes explored in his work.

David Galloway

In the past Open Studios exhibitions, my work focused on creating narrative rich, household furniture and objects made from up-cycled materials. In 2018, I am stepping from looking at the things that surround people and make their lives rich and livable, to looking at how to enrich people’s identity in the context of their community and culture. This shift is accompanied by a considerable increase in the size of the works.

Description

Working with the concept of “different minds”, I’m developing interactive sculptural installations and collaborations across the 4ha of the Ferart Studio property.

My art practice seeks to create narrative rich pieces that investigate the integration of scientific, rational and economic activity; with the ecological, communal, intuitive and sensual aspects of human culture. It places a strong emphasis on inviting people to live more rich and interesting lives.

During Open Studios there will be collaborative activities and events for all ages, see the Ferart Studio website and Facebook page for details.

Debbie Chambers

In Open Studios 2018, I’ve used the creative process to explore the concept of “different minds”. The result is an “art scape” of up cycled works across the studio and property, that provide stories and a narrative exploring the experience of living and coping in a complex world of difference. “Same, same but different” using Mindfulness to view this space well describes what I am grappling with in these works.

Description

My art finds a place as “Quirky”, capturing elements of function and form, imbuing soul, storytelling, sharing new skills and old ways. It is about creative designs using repurposed materials – collecting, finding treasures, exchanging, sharing, using existing resources, making new things from old, and reducing consumption. Most of my work uses the flotsam and jetsam I find around me, for expression and imagery that illustrates what I see and want to express to others.

At Open Studios you will experience colour, light, assemblage, textiles and installations. Throughout the process, I delve into how we can reduce waste, create social networks, build opportunities, and enrich communities to encourage hope, optimism and creativity. Some works are collaborative, some provocative and many I hope are inspiring. Come and spend some time exploring the space. Enjoy the creative design ideas and projects you find, bring a picnic if you like and sit and soak up the works in the bush setting. Join the interactive activities, workshops and events we are planning for all ages over the two weeks of Open Studios…see Ferart Studio website and Facebook page for details.

Description

With her cross-cultural biography, she feels caught between worlds and questions how Polish or German she really is. What and where is home? Not a dot on a map defined by lines and numbers, but a psychological state, something that James Baldwin called an ‘irrevocable condition’.

Elisa relates to Croatian writer Dubravka Ugresic who thinks that memories are where we might live after we’ve lost the real thing. Memories are the closest she has to a home.

Elizabeth Whiteman

Luscious, buttery oils are my medium. Colour is my language. Multi-layered, colour-drenched canvases. I seek to expand my vocabulary and tell stories that move me.

Description

Stories of vulnerability and fragility. How this provokes such a diverse range of human response, from the desire to nurture and protect, to discard as worthless, through to perverse exploitation and abuse for personal gain…

Nudes figure prominently in my paintings – naked, intimate, private. I want to gently peak behind the mask, reveal what’s hidden, raw, laid bare, exposed, both in the subject matter and in the human response. The exposed becomes the exposer.

Emily Jackson

Margaret River artist Emily Jackson draws her inspiration from the local flora and fauna and uses a variety of mediums and methods of printmaking to document these species on paper.

Fi Wilkie

Fi Wilkie is a Painter based in Margaret River where she has lived and worked for over 25 years. In addition to spending her time as a full time artist, she works with non artists, lapsed artists and budding artists to develop and engage with their own creative thinking. Her Workshops aim to build confidence, lose fear, and to help the participant get to know more about themselves, how they work and how to listen to their own intuitive selves.

  • Open Days/times:BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
  • Galleries:Drawing,Painting,Print Making,Artist Studio

Details

  • Open Days:By Appointment Only

Description

Fi has been busy dreaming, imagining, problem solving and pitching ideas since she was 4. Her usual comment, as a young child, to any loving gift giver was – ‘what other colours did they have’! She has a background in Design and loves colour, shape and pattern.

Her process of creating is always evolving, she starts her work with a big random ‘mess’ and then works how to clarify and ‘find’ the painting within it. It seems to reflect the mess of life, the uncontrollable elements, the parts we need to let go of and just allow. The work of bringing it under control – turning it into something that makes sense is the journey each painting goes thru. Fi never plans her images, she lets them evolve – so she can enjoy the surprise and see what will happen – continuing to work on them until there doesn’t seem to be anything left to do.

Description

A ‘love of lines’ (remanent from her 25yr career in drafting) but still aparent to her in the vineyards, and also now appearing very significantly in her minimalistic style of life drawing, evokes emotion and atmosphere. A recent trip to India now adds ‘colour’ to the mix!

Jenny produces a wide range of work for which she has won numerous awards. Her work can be viewed at Xanadu Winery and Jahroc Galleries

She experimentally paints anything. From abstract, impressionistic styles to bold figurative art, in many media, drawing some inspiration from travels throughout Europe, the UK, Zanzibar and Thailand.

Joanna Alferink

Joanna finds herself inspired by nature, drawn to its patterns and colours. I love creating bright, colourful and fun pieces that bring a splash of joy to others!

Jonathon Thwaites

Jonathon explores the inner Universe outwardly, using found materials to mimic patterns of natural environments. He externalises the internal, bringing the soul (as pattern) as it is manifest in the material world, to focus to elucidate the inner soulfulness of our material world.

Description

A multifaceted interdisciplinary approach led Kashmir Rouw on a journey through the arts from the physical to the conceptual. Inspired by a deep connection to the environment. Infused with geometric patterns. A desire to translate these sacred principals.

His art conceives a reality below the physical surface. A space of reflection and timelessness. A mirror to our own fragility. His iconic sculptural stone forms grace the coastal landscape of Margaret River’s Gnarabup and Mainbreak  – “Wave Wall”, “Spiral”, “Shellta” and “Refuge”.

Kristy Hoghton

Description

Art is forever an evolving and changing journey. For me art is a way to communicate to the inner world. It can inspire the senses, stir emotion and allow healing and personal growth.

An image, can tell a different story for each observer and something as simple as drinking from a handmade cup, can bring forward feelings of warmth and nurture.

Laurie Posa

Laurie is an artist who paints primarily in a surrealist fashion. He has a strong interest in how we as a species fit into the landscape, both physically and emotionally.

  • Galleries:Drawing,Painting,Print Making,Artist Studio
  • Open Days/times:BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

Details

  • Open Days:By Appointment Only

Description

Laurie likes to temper these painterly observations with irony and sometimes dark humour, leaving the interpretation of the work to the viewer: for example, a horizon line could be a part of the simple landscape or a plane of your sub-conscious filled with metaphors. Posa's work is held in public and private collections in Australia and overseas.
