Description

A boutique winery that operates ‘off the grid’, Arimia was established in 1997 by Ann Spencer. Located in the north end of Margaret River, it makes the most of its superb environment, surrounded by the untouched Cape Naturaliste National Park and the Indian Ocean, to make an innovative range of estate-grown wines.

The vineyard follows organic practices and grows a diverse mix of grapes, from Margaret River’s classics of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon through to Mourvedre, Zinfandel and Verdehlo.

One of the most authentic food and wine experiences to be found in Margaret River,

the acclaimed wine range can be sampled at the relaxed cellar door, built primarily using recycled and plantation timber.

The Food

Awarded ‘Gourmet Traveller Regional Restaurant of the Year’ 2018, Arimia’s menu comes mostly from farm-grown produce including pork and trout raised on the 55ha property. The kitchen, headed by chef Evan Hayter is dedicated to utilising entire animals, with a no-waste approach that encourages creativity. Bookings are highly recommended. Open Thursday to Tuesday for lunch.

The Pasta
A vast range of pasta is made on site. Watch the pasta being made and buy some to enjoy at home! All pasta is made with top grade semolina flour and fresh eggs, laid by happy Margaret River chickens.

The Wine
Enjoy small-batch wines, handpicked by owners Raminta and Egidijus Rusilas and their family and friends. Wine styles include Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet blends.

Local Honey – 100% Raw & Real
Barnyard 1978 works with local independent beekeepers to deliver varietal honeys from around WA. The range is constantly evolving based on natural supplies. Typically, there are seven or more varieties available for free tastings including Marri, Karri, Red Bell, Wandoo, White Gum and  Blackbutt.

Description

Planted in 1996, Cape Grace is a proud ‘little winery’ in Margaret River owned by Robert & Karri-Davies, whose family has been part of the local community since 1875. The hand-crafted, single-vineyard wines are grown in their organically-managed property in Wilybrup, a site surrounded by natural forest.

The Wines
All of Margaret River’s signature varieties are made, along with a Chenin and a sparkling Chenin. All wines are made using traditional processes and the highly-awarded reds are hand plunged and basket-pressed.

Wine Tasting
One of the region’s quaint and rustic wineries, with a tin-shed-in-the-forest setting. Karen and Robert are behind the cellar door counter more often than not, providing the opportunity to ‘meet the maker’ and learn the ins and outs of being a small winemaker in Margaret River. During vintage (February – April) visitors may see some fermenting action in the winery and in spring (September – October) there’s also stunning wildflowers.

Unique Highlights
The wine storage area you enter through IS the right entrance! Look out for Robert’s photographs and paraphernalia on display including Robert’s private collection of Australian parrots in a natural bush setting. We are dog friendly and have a childens play area.

Description

One of Margaret River’s founding five estates, Cape Mentelle was established in 1970 by regional pioneer David Hohnen and his brothers Mark and Giles. In 1983 Cape Mentelle won Australia’s most coveted wine award, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Award for its Cabernet Sauvignon and cemented its position as a premium producer when it won it again the following year. This was huge, not just for Cape Mentell, but also for the youthful Margaret River wine region.

Today Cape Mentelle forms part of the LVMH group (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) and its wines remain some of the region’s most critically acclaimed. James Halliday says they are, “knocking on the door of the Winery of the Year Award.” Environmental sustainability is a key driver within the vineyards and winery and Cape Mentelle was WA’s first member into Australian wine sustainability program, Entwined. To achieve this certification the vineyard utilises the most natural viticulture techniques.

The Wines
The critically-acclaimed wine range is focused around Margaret River’s signature varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (and blends), Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Chardonnay. An historic Zinfandel is made too, from vines planted in 1974 which were brought out directly from California to the Cape Mentelle Vineyard.

Wine Tasting
The cellar door is one of the region’s original to be made with rammed earth. Located just five minutes towards the coast from Margaret River town, guests can enjoy tasting experiences starting from $10. A Behind the Scenes Tour and Behind the Scenes Tour with Food and Wine Pairing Experience run on weekdays, offering the unique opportunity to explore behind the winery walls of one of the region’s most famous estates. Open daily 10am – 5pm.

Unique Highlights
Nostalgia enthusiasts will love the photo collection lining the barrel hall behind the cellar door. It features images remembering the early days of establishing Cape Mentelle and the Margaret River wine region. The whole family can enjoy picnic facilities, dedicated activities areas for children and estate’s petanque courts. Similar to bocce, this game originated in 1907 in Provence, Southern France. The courts are free to use, boules can be borrowed from the cellar door.

Since 1982 Cape Mentelle has hosted the region’s most renowned Cabernet event. The Cape Mentelle International Cabernet Tasting is a blind tasting that features a selection of Cabernets from the world’s finest cabernet producing regions; Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Tuscany and Margaret River. Description

This family owned, single-vineyard property was established in 1999. The Fokkema family selected the site for its ideal gravel loam soils, ample clean water and northern-facing slopes. The vineyard has been farmed organically for 15 years and is in the process of completing its ‘Certified Organic’ accreditation.

The Churchview vineyard is known to grow Margaret River’s most extensive amount of varieties within a single vineyard, with sixteen different types of grapes planted.

The Wines
The wines are made onsite at the property’s winery. Many are matured in oak, and Churchview prides itself on investing in the best quality French oak. Four wine ranges are made from the diverse varieties within the vineyard and offer easy drinking through to rare and fine collector wines. All the classic Margaret River varieties are made. The St Johns range features less-common varieties including a Zinfandel, Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Viognier and Marsanne.

Wine Tasting
The diverse wine range can be tasted at the Cellar Door which is located within a period cottage at the estate. The Heritage Listed St John the Baptist Anglican Church can be seen from the tasting room, hence the name. Many of the wines cannot be found for purchase anywhere other than the cellar door. Allow 30 minutes for a full tasting. Open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday.

Dogs are welcome (on leash) and visitors are invited to bring a picnic and make a day of enjoying the beautiful wines, stunning vineyard views and manicured gardens.

Unique Highlights
Those seeking curio wines will love discovering the wild fermented Riesling, Viognier and Chenin Blanc; varieties not often seen in Margaret River.

Description

First planted in 1976, Clairault Streicker has grown from a modest 4-hectare vineyard to a 200-hectare estate, incorporating four premium vineyards throughout Margaret River. The estate maintains an exceptional track record for its wines, which are grown following natural, biological farming principles.

Clairault Steicker combines two unique Margaret River wine stories. Streicker Wines began with a Yallingup vineyard in 2002, acquired by US native John Streicker who was so taken with the local lifestyle, sustainable viticulture ethos and world-class wines when visiting in 2001 that he decided to pursue his wine dreams in Margaret River. In 2012, historic estate Clairault Wines became part of the Streicker portfolio. Major enhancements have been made to all vineyard management to continually improve fruit and wine quality.

The Wines
The wine range celebrates the diversity of Margaret River’s hero varieties when grown in different areas of the wine appellation, with highlights including a single vineyard Cabernet made from 40 year old Wilyabrup vines and a cool-climate looking Syrah from Wallcliffe. It is a pure and unique journey through terroir in Margaret River. Look out for a few niche varieties in the mix too.

Wine Tasting
Follow a scenic driveway off Caves Road through farm land and native forest to the contemporary cellar door. A relaxing environment to discover the premium wines, it also offers a selection of house made produce available for sale. Private tours and tastings can be arranged in advance. Open 10am-5pm daily.

The Food
The Clairault Streicker Café serves up a selection of modern Australian share-plates for lunch daily. The menu showcases excellent produce, served simply, ideal for those who enjoy less formal dining. For the ultimate indulgence, spend an afternoon with the 5 course long lunch. A gorgeous stone fire-place makes for cosy dining in winter, while in summer, a picnic blanket in the gardens makes for a blissful lunch setting.

Description

Cullen Wines was established by Diana and Kevin Cullen who began experimenting with viticulture in 1966 following various research reports that suggested Margaret River’s climate was similar to that of Bordeaux. Encouraging results led the pair to plant 18 acres of vines on their sheep and cattle farm in 1971 to establish Cullen Wines. Daughter Vanya became chief winemaker in 1989 and has earnt a reputation as one of Australia’s most awarded winemakers.

In 2005, the iconic Diana Madeline Cabernet Merlot was awarded the top Langton’s Classification category of ‘Exceptional’, one of a handful of Australia’s best wines to hold this status. The Kevin John Chardonnay 2007 was awarded the World’s Best Chardonnay at the 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards. Both wines have received a host of international awards, judged against the world’s best wines.

The Wines

The wines are estate-grown from Cullen Wines’ two A Grade Biodynamic (BFA) certified vineyards in Wilyabrup, Margaret River. The philosophy is to search for the best quality expression of the vineyard in the wine. Quality is paramount, and every winemaking step reflects Cullen Wines’ approach to do whatever it takes to make the most outstanding wines. Cabernet Sauvignon (and blends) and Chardonnay are the focus.

Wine Tasting

Cullen Wine’s harmonious stone and timber cellar door is open daily 10.30am to 4pm and offers complimentary tastings of current release wines. A selection of museum vintages can be purchased by the glass from the cellar door’s enomatic wine machine. Enthusiasts will love Cullen Wines tour, which teaches the principles of biodynamics in the vineyards and includes a visit to the historic vines and winery followed by a private wine tasting.

The Food

The award-winning Cullen restaurant overlooks their historic vineyard making a relaxing place for a glass of wine, lunch or a coffee. The menu incorporates only fresh, biodynamic and organic produce sourced from Cullen’s restaurant garden and selected local producers. Driftwood Estate is a boutique winery set in the stunning Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Established by Tom and Helen Galopoulos in 1989 on what had previously been a country retreat, the winery immediately received acclaim when its first wine, a Semillon produced in 1993, won a special commendation in a British competition.

In 2009, leading Australian wine writer James Halliday rated Driftwood Estate as one of the best wineries in the Margaret River region. This result has continued into the 2018 Wine Companion, where Driftwood Estate has again been rated a 5 Star Winery. The vine resources are exceptional, having had years of nurturing to ensure they produce premium fruit showcasing the Wilyabrup sub-region beautifully.

The winemaking philosophy behind the Driftwood wines is one of simplicity – quality wines are made in the vineyard. While winemaking can have a positive input, having premium quality fruit is essential. This is why Driftwood Estate is so fortunate to be located in one of the greatest viticultural areas in the world, sourcing super premium fruit year in year out. The wines are produced under four labels, Single Site, Artifacts, The Collection, and Oceania.

Our Single Site range of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the best of Driftwood Estate. Over the years, our vineyards have grown in maturity and pedigree, and we have produced Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2016 vintage to reflect this, with releases occurring soon.

Artifacts are the more complex styles, demonstrating the intense characters old vine fruit can develop, and once in the winery, utilising oak influence and subtle winemaking techniques resulting in wines of strength, elegance, and integrity that will drink beautifully young whilst also reward careful cellaring.

The Collection range showcases fruit driven, regionally renowned wines that are designed to be enjoyed in their youth – vibrant blends and crisp, clean wines for everyday drinking.

The Oceania range is predominately a cellar door and online range, offering a Rosé, a White Blend, a Sparkling and a Tawny.

The label was established by hands-on winemaker Nigel Ludlow, who studied in New Zealand and worked in Hungary, South Africa and Spain before settling in Margaret River.

Located in the heart of Margaret River, the Evoi vineyards’ quality fruit is a result of its close proximity to the ocean, incredible regional soil types and an idyllic climate. 

The Wines
The Evoi premium wine range includes Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and a Bordeaux-style blend. The wines have received excellent critical acclaim including “WA Winery of the Year” at the 2015 Melbourne International Wine Show, and a sought-after 5 Red Star Rating from James Halliday.

Description

Renowned regional viticulturist Ian Bell planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon at this 5 hectare vineyard in 1990. He is proud to be a fifth generation Glenmore farmer; his family have been farmers in the Margaret River area since the early 1900s. The Indian Ocean is visible from the property, where the vines are north-facing, planted on well-drained, gravel-loam soils, and are hand-pruned, thinned and harvested for optimum fruit quality. 

The Wines

Glenmore produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. 

Happs Wines and Commonage Pottery

Happs has welcomed visitors to their rustic cellar door for over 35 years. There is a wine for every palate including those allergic to preservatives. Many visitors review us on Trip Advisor. The 4.5 star rating puts the winery in the top 10% globally.

The Wines
The wines are produced entirely in house from estate-grown fruit from the Quindalup and the larger Karridale vineyard known as Three Hills. The Three Hills property is associated with later ripening, fuller flavour, elegance and finesse. The wine range includes sweet, dry, preservative free, fortified, and sparkling wines.

Wine Tasting
The rustic cellar door was built in the 1970s and is constructed of handmade mud-bricks. Look closely to see builders’ finger marks on the walls, capturing, “the essence of old school Margaret River". It's warm and inviting. Cellar door staff offer a friendly, educated approach to explain the extensive portfolio of wines.

Culinary Experiences
Take a basket and select from a range of gourmet cheese, meats, pickled vegetables and preserves from more than 15 local producers, pair with some Happs Wine and indulge! Picnic on the lawn, at the outside tables, or inside if it’s a rainy day.

The Commonage Pottery 
Happs Pottery began in Vasse in the early 1970s. The current workshop and gallery was built in 1978. See artists at work in the act of creation. A wide range of handicrafts and jewellery from local artisans is available.

This ultra-boutique, single-vineyard winery was established in 1995 by George and Mary Heydon. The vineyard, comprising Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot was planted on idyllic land in Wilyabrup in 1988 and is managed primarily with biodynamic, organic and traditional viticulture principles.

The Wines
The boutique winery makes just 2,000 dozen wines each vintage, focused on Margaret River’s hero varieties. The emphasis is on expressing their wine’s single estate origin and employs minimal intervention winemaking techniques. The highly-regarded wine collection is made by long-term Margaret River winemaker Mark Messenger, also known for his work at Juniper Estate, and historically at Cape Mentelle. Among numerous major accolades, Heydon Estate received the Wine of Provenance Award at the Margaret River Wine Show in 2017 for its Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Tasting
Hands-on and enthusiastic owner, Irish-born Mary Heydon personally hosts guests at the authentic and welcoming cellar door, located just 15 minutes north of Margaret River town.  Complimentary tastings are available daily from 10.30am – 5pm. Set on 138 hectares of native bushland less than 5 minutes from the town of Cowaramup, the property is a spectacular place to witness the changing of the seasons. The winding tree-lined driveway passes a traditional old settler cottage and the famous Willyabrup Creek on its way to the cellar door.

The cellar door is surrounded by spacious lawn areas, where you can bring a picnic, borrow a bocce set and enjoy a glass or bottle of wine under the sun. In winter, cosy up inside on the couches with a wine by the fire. The building itself is a must-see example of award-winning architecture, built according to Feng Shui principles.

Our contemporary, cool climate wine styles are noted for their pure, fresh and clean characteristics, where the flavour of the fruit is the primary character.

Description

McHenry Honen is the fusion of an accomplished fine-wine retailer, Murray McHenry, with one of Margaret River’s most respected pioneers David Hohnen (founder of Cape Mentelle).

Their aim is to make the most site expressive wines they can from their three distinct family vineyards in Margaret River, all of which are 100% biodynamic. Biodynamics revolves around an environmental equilibrium. It is similar to organic farming, in that both preclude the use of chemicals, however biodynamic farming incorporates ideas about a vineyard as an ecosystem, and also accounts for astrological influences and lunar cycles.

The Wines
There is an unwavering focus on making distinct, site expressive wines and on embracing the individual characters that come from the different plots in the vineyards. This is achieved through minimal-intervention using wild yeasts, minimal sulphur, no filtration and large format oak and concrete fermenters. The range includes Margaret River’s specialty varieties and a few unexpected surprises. More than five single-site Chardonnays showcase just how different the flavours of this variety can be because of different site influences in the vineyard.

Wine Tasting
The cellar door is conveniently located on Caves Road, just five minutes from Margaret River town. The wines can be tasted between 10.30 and 4.30pm daily.

Unique Highlights
Don’t leave without some of David Hohnen’s smoked cold meats, sausages and traditionally made smallgoods from side venture, The Farm House Margaret River. These are sold from the McHenry Hohnen Cellar Door. Description

Morlet is a boutique vineyard in Cowaramup, managed with meticulous viticulture and a focus on sustainable farming. The vineyard includes two blocks planted in 1998 and 2000 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Zinfandel.

The Wines
The handpicked wines are made with uncompromising quality, matured only in French and American oak. Unique to the label are the Rosé wines. The Filly’s Folly Zinfandel Rosé is a sweeter style with a zippy ferment-induced fizz, while the Pat Nat is made from the ancient ‘petillant naturel’ fermenting technique for sparkling wine, known for its interesting residual flavours and body.

There is no cellar door however the wines can be found at selected Perth retailers, farmer’s markets, annual events and via the Morlet Wines website.

Snake & Herring’s Yarri Restaurant has fast-become a hotspot dining in the south-west dining. It is located in Dunsborough and headed by one of WA’s most highly awarded chefs, Aaron Carr. The menu features only local produce and is inspired by the six seasons of the Noongar people and country, with all ingredients sourced sustainably and thoughtfully.

South by South West combine growing fruit themsleves and sourcing fruit from a loyal network of pioneering growers in the region. Creating a story behind each wine made, the wine is given an opportunity to develop its own personality in a fully-attentive small batch.

By keeping intervention minimal to best showcase the region, South by South West demonstrates the complex characteristics and values of the south west in each wine made. Words used by South by South West to represent their brand are wine négociant and éleveur. Both of which, elaborate on the independent steps of vinification and the raising progression of the wine between fermentation and bottling. All in all, South by South West has dubbed itself a contemporary négociant-éleveur, fusing the traditional with the modern.

Currently, batch sizes are determined by fruit quality at harvest and how the fruit is showcased in the wine. South by South West prides itself on its Regional Classics as they represent the distinctive characteristics of varietals and terroir within the south west sub-regions. With generous fruit-driven flavours, the Regional Classics are young, vibrant and ready to drink, with room to mature.
Additionally, South by South West hosts their One Tonne Projects, which are limited to what is produced from one tonne of the best fruit they can source. No boundaries are placed on the winemaking process, as they range from single varietals to blends and stainless steel to concrete tanks. Each wine is only produced once, fully expressing the terroir complexity and environmental conditions of each vintage. South by South West also offer an even smaller batch wine labelled Barrel Batches. These batches are limited to one barrel only, but packed full of personality. Despite their small runs, these experimental wines have a fun and adventurous feel.

South by South West places great emphasis on their friendly team environment from the owners, Mij and Liv, to the growers, to their very own wine dog. Mij and Liv also place emphasis on their efforts to minimise their environmental impact, by sourcing the best local fruits and supporting local charities through their Wine Club initiative.

Description

Tassell Park Wines began as a retirement hobby of Ian Tassell, a well-known Perth marketeer. Little did he realise it was to be the start of a far greater journey. The vineyard was planted between 1998 and 2001 with signature Margaret River varieties. The wines received critical acclaim and awards from the onset and from the first ten vintages took home no less than 12 trophies, and 250 medals!

Through its premium wines, Tassell Park established itself as one of Margaret River’s awarded 100% estate grown, boutique wine producers.

The Wines
The award-winning range has loyalists from near and far and represents styles from dry and elegant through to fruity and sweet wines. The Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon in particular have been recognised as two of the best in Margaret River and Australia.

Wine Tasting
Located nearby Cowaramup, follow a striking avenue of plane trees to the picturesque cellar door. The charming tasting area features earthy colours and rustic materials. It is open for wine tastings Friday to Sunday, 11am – 4pm. Picnickers are welcome to stay and enjoy the tranquillity of the property’s lake, vineyard and valley views.

Unique Highlights
In 2009 Tassell Park Wines became the first winery to receive the double honour of trophies for Best Estate Grown White and Red wine at the Western Australia Wine Industry Awards.

Whicher Ridge Wines is owned by two experienced vignerons, Neil and Cathy Howard, who between them have over 45 years of viticulture and winemaking experience working with high profile wineries.

Description

Their vineyard is located at a unique site south of Busselton, 170 metres above sea level in the Whicher Range to take full advantage of the cool winds that arrive off the Southern Ocean during Summer. The soils are gravelly ironstone sandy loam, similar to the highly-acclaimed Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River. The vineyard was planted in 2004 with Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. New plantings of Malbec and Mourvedre have been added in recent years.

The Wines
An artisan wine producer, Whicher Ridge makes a range of sparkling and table wines which are single vineyard, single region wines. The grapes are sourced from its own vineyard and from vineyards in other WA wine regions including Frankland River in the Great Southern, and Margaret River.

Wine Tasting
The farm-style cellar door is open Thursday to Monday. Choose from a variety of tasting experiences, including an in-depth tasting and Wine Sensory Garden Tour which can be booked in advance. Enjoy the unique opportunity to taste with the winemaker and gain a firsthand understanding of three of Western Australia’s wine regions, and the philosophy behind the making of each of the wines. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic lunch, and stay a little longer to enjoy the peaceful, rural landscape and play a game of petanque. Dogs are also welcome to visit as long as they kept are on a lead.

Unique Highlights
Whicher Ridge is the only winery in Australia with a specially themed and planted Wine Sensory Garden. This is the centre piece of the wine tasting experience, with it’s plantings of fruit trees, herbs, flowers and seasonal vegetables which describe and match the flavours, textures and styles of the award winning Whicher Ridge Wines. Visitors can ‘Pick and Sip’ their way around the Garden, immersing all of their five senses in the experience and discovering along the way how to describe the flavours that they are tasting in a wine as well as learning how simple it is to pair food with wine.

Description

Chris, Jo, Lucas and Violette Davies are a young West Australian family and the grape growers and artisan wine producers at Windows Estate.

All Windows Estate vines are cared for meticulously and dry block grown to ensure maximum concentration of flavours. Chris, a passionate viticulturist, completes every vineyard operation single-handedly. Apart from the very day the grapes are harvested, no one else is ever allowed to touch his vines!

In the winery, the preference is toward ancient, hand-processing methods with minimal use of machinery. As one of few remaining wineries still using a manual basket press, Window’s Estate Basket Pressed Cabernet Merlot, Basket Pressed Cabernet Sauvignon and Basket Pressed Shiraz are special propositions in Margaret River.

Sustainability is a key focus and over 60% of the Estate is reserved as natural bushland. Minimal intervention is employed in grape growing and winemaking processes and as a certified organic vineyard only organic fertilisers are used.

Cellar Door tastings are available daily. We also make our own pickles on site at our picklery, using locally grown produce. These can also be tasted and purchased at our cellar door. Cheese platters can be purchased to enjoy at the Estate. Being a small, family business, bookings are requested for tasting groups of 6 or more people.
