  • Museums:Local History
  • Historical Sites:Buildings,Prisons

Details

  • Open Days:Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday,Friday,Saturday,Sunday

Description

The City of Busselton’s ArtGeo Cultural Complex is a creative hub for the visual and performing arts housed in heritage-listed buildings on Queen Street, close to Busselton’s much-loved foreshore. Once linked to the Jetty, the heritage-listed Courthouse, built in 1860, is one of the oldest buildings in Busselton and played an important role in its settlement history.

Walk through the buildings and feel the history within their walls. Explore the gaol cells and imagine being locked up for 14 days for disorderly conduct in a public place behind one of the heavy wooden doors.

The Courthouse Gift Shop reflects the transition from colonial courthouse to modern-day art house. Once inside, you'll discover a tempting range of high quality locally crafted art, jewellery, pottery, cards, photography and woodwork.

Set in the rear courtyard of the complex, there are two artist in residence studios featuring ceramic artist Tracie Anderson and jewellery designer Nalda Hoskins. The general public are welcome to visit these studios, which were once stables, to see the artists at work.

The cultural precinct is also home to the Busselton Art Society, the Busselton Woodturners' Association and the children's theatre group Acting Up. A sheltered courtyard, bush food garden and life-size bronze sculptures augment the ambience of the precinct.

Open daily 10am to 4pm, free entry.

Ellensbrook Heritage Site

In 1857 Ellen and Alfred Bussell chose the site of their new home, now a heritage listed building, surrounded in national park and open to the public.

  • Historical Sites:Buildings

Details

  • Open Days:Friday,Saturday,Sunday,Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday

Description

In 1857 Ellen and Alfred Bussell chose the site of their new home. Sheltered from the winter storms, the site had access to fresh water and was surrounded by fertile soil.

Over the decades the house was built in stages by ticket-of-leave convicts, deserting seamen and local Noongars. The Ellensbrook venture was successful, with income derived from the sale of beef, butter and cheese. Much of the success was due to the practical skills, energy and sound management of Ellen. Alfred and Ellen left Ellensbrook in 1865.

Between 1871 and 1877 Ellensbrook was managed, and the homestead extended, by the eldest of their five daughters, Fanny. Later, the second daughter Edith made Ellensbrook her permanent home. In 1899 she established the Ellensbrook Farm Home for Aboriginal Children. The Home continued for 17 years during which time Edith continued the tradition of extending the main building.

The Noongar name for the locality is Mokidup, and it was a traditional summer camping spot for thousands of years.

Open: Thursday - Saturday, 10am to 4pm

Open Saturday - Monday Easter Long Weekend

Entry Fees:

Adult $4, Child/Concession $2, Group Bookings (10+) $2/pp, Family $10, National Trust Members Free
