Description

Nestled in the stunning Rosa Brook Valley, 6km from Margaret River township, the Bare Rooted vineyard was established in 1996 and was planted exclusively from nursery-reared 'bare rooted' vine cuttings. Strong, lush and abundant vines have led to the creation of their aromatic and rich yet cleansing Sauvignon Blanc (which can be purchased online only).

Description

Inspired by life in the Margaret River wine industry, Vikki Messenger penned her novel, 'Crush', revolving around life and love around the vineyards of Margaret River. Beneath the Kite being the name of the fictional winery in the book. When Vikki's winemaker husband, the highly regarded Mark Messenger read the book, he was inspired by the creative opportunity to realise a fictional winery, and sourced premium Malbec grapes from a local, vineyard to make its debut wine.

The Malbec is available on the Settlers Tavern's wine menu and at various fine wine retailers

 

Burnside Organic Wines

Description

Established in 2011 by Jamie and Lara McCall, this small family winery is organic and biodynamic with Australian Certified Organic and has been for over 15 years. The farm's dry-grown, north-facing vineyards are managed by hand and the fruit is hand-picked by the McCalls each vintage, reflecting the estate's family values and close attention to detail. 

The Wines

A Zinfandel and Zinfandel Rose are made, taking inspiration from David Hohnen’s original plantings at Cape Mentelle in the 1970s. Vermentino is made in still and sparkling styles.  Wines can be purchased from stockists throughout Western Australia or at the farm by appointment only. 

Unique Highlights

Burnside Organic Wines is also home to four rammed-earth bungalows featuring solid limestone walls, charming firepits and sweeping views of the Burnside Organic Farm. The Farm also grows meat and poultry, eggs, fruit and vegetables, honey and wine. The produce can often be found at the Margaret River Farmer’s Markets on Saturday mornings.

Description

At Butler Crest the skills of viticulturist Andy Ferreira and winemaker Bruce Dukes combine to make a fantastic range of quality, value for money, regional wines. Following extensive terrain and soil analysis, this unique Wilyabrup vineyard was planted with Caberent Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Butler Crest stems from Normandy, and the story of Herveius Walter who accompanied William the Conqueror to England in 1066 as his trusted ‘le Botiler’ or wine bearer. The name ‘Botiler’ was passed down through generations of Walter’s family – notably his grandson, Theobald, who journeyed to Ireland with Henry II. The title was eventually anglicised to ‘Butler’. The original duties included selecting and presenting the first cup of wine to the King and the butler crest was depicted on golden cups in the Second Quarter.

Butler Crest winery keeps this tradition alive in selecting and presenting its fine wines from Margaret River to the world.

The winery makes wines under two labels; Handcrafted and Tabletalk. The varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Blends.

In 2000, owners Michael & Kim O’Brien chose Margaret River as the place in which to establish Celestial Bay and turned their dream into a reality with the purchase of 210 acres. Description

In the late 1980s, fine wine retailer Ron Fraser recognised Margaret River’s potential as a world leading wine region and decided it would be the place for him to make exceptional wines.

After a lengthy search for a site in the perfect location, the Chapman Grove vineyard was planted in 1997. The fruit was sold to local winemakers up until 2006 when the first Chapman Grove Wines were released to the market. In the first decade, the wines received eight trophies and over 100 medals in wines shows around Australia.

Within just three years of production, this small, private label became a 5 Star winery in James Halliday’s Wine Companion in 2009, reflecting the outstanding quality of the wines being made.

The Wines
The various Chapman Grove labels are all award-winners in their own right. The Atticus label makes small batch wines in great vintages, working with Cabernet, Shiraz, Chardonnay and also Bordeaux-styled, barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. The Chapman Grove label comprises estate grown, approachable, unpretentious and distinctive interpretations of all the Margaret River classics.

Description

Located on rich bushland, the Cloudburst vineyard utilises cooling maritime breezes and warm daytime temperatures to slowly ripen its flavoursome grapes. Each self-irrigating vine expresses brilliant varietal purity and is surrounded by healthy soils retaining the moisture and nutrients of the region.

The 2013 Margaret River Wine Show brought Cloudburst some note-worthy awards including Best Single Vineyard Estate Red Wine, Best Cabernet Sauvignon and Best Red Wine of the Show.

Description

The Cave is recognised as one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites, holding evidence of life from 50,000 years ago. It was here that Phil Sexton, then an archaeology student and later Devil’s Lair founder and WA hospitality legend, found himself considering the idea of creating a wine label. In 1981 Phil purchased land nearby and the Devil’s Lair wine story began.

Devil’s Lair is known for its meticulous winemaking standards and environmentally focused viticulture. Their efforts towards sustainability have earnt them national Entwine accreditation. For every hectare of vineyard planted on the property, there is 1.14 hectares of natural vegetation retained or planted.

The Wines
The Devil’s Lair winemaking philosophy is to be meticulous, to continually question and challenge, and to refine a winemaking style that is as much about intuition as science. The label focuses on the varieties that fare best in Margaret River. Their chardonnays are known for their taut acidity, minerality, length and subtle oak, while the Cabernet is typically complex and layered with lively aromas. Three tiers enable all budgets to find their perfect Margaret River wine.

Description

A small family-owned winery specialising in the production of traditional-method Sparkling wines in Margaret River. The Frazer Woods vineyard is ideally located in Wilyabrup, Margaret River and planted with Shiraz. The winemaking facility has become the only of its type in WA to make “methode Champenoise” wines (and works with many other wineries to produce their sparkling wines).

It is owned and operated by John Frazer who collaborates with Californian Harold Osborne. Harold has produced sparkling wines for decades and is best known for his time making the Pelorus wines at New Zealand winery, Cloudy Bay.

The exemplary Fraser Woods range includes a vintage and non-vintage Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay and Sparkling Shiraz that are available online and stocked in a handful of retailers and restaurants around Australia.

Description

Frog Choir makes a tiny 250 cases of wine each year from one of the region’s micro-vineyards. The estate takes its name from the diverse populations of frogs that reside among the small spring-fed dams on its impeccable property, ideally located nearby icon producers Leeuwin Estate, Voyager Estate and Xanadu.

The Wines
The quaint vineyard specialises in growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and its range is centred around the classic Australian blend of the two. The wines are completely handmade, from pruning to hand-harvests and hand-plunged open ferments. The flavoursome wines demonstrate a balance between the primary fruit flavours and textures from the vineyard, alongside the estate’s quality winemaking.

The first two vintages received a total of eight medals and the awards have continued since.

Description

Grown on a 45.5 hectare vineyard in Cowaramup, Grand Vin Estate began its journey growing grapes for prominent nearby producers before debuting its own range 2010. The vineyard grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Winemaker John Glaetzer oversees production and is known for his time at Wolf Blass Wines in the Barossa Valley. He is also known as one of Australia’s leading wine judges. A fruit-driven unoaked Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is made, along with a gentle, flavourful Cabernet Merlot.

While there is no cellar door, the wines can be purchased online.

Description

One of Margaret River’s earlier established vineyards began in 1979 with planting throughout the early 1980s and has since reaped the benefits of serious long-term viticulture investment. Before wine, the property’s life was as a “Gelignite Block” which stored explosives used to clear the nearby forest for farmland settlements of World War I soldiers.

The Wines
The surrounding Boranup Forest is not just picturesque but also protects the vineyard from the ocean winds and storms. Karri loam soils and access to a natural water supply from the McCleod creek, which runs through the property, supports long, gentle, even ripening of the fruit. The range focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

 

Higher Plane Wines

After visiting over 30 sites, a stunning southern site in Walcliffe was chosen to establish this high-scoring winery’s minimal intervention vineyard and wine range.

Description

The original owners of Higher Plane inspected over 30 sites around Margaret River before settling upon Forest Grove. The vineyard, with its gravelly duplex soils and southern Margaret River cool southerly winds, was first planted in 1997 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Subsequent Chardonnay plantings have ensued. Natural farming principles are followed to ensure optimum soil health and encourage biodiversity in the vineyard.

The Wines

The team firmly believes in the ‘less is more’ approach, seeking delicacy, elegance and complexity in the wines through minimal intervention winemaking. Indigenous yeasts are often used for fermentation and minimal sulphur additions are made for the truest expression of the vineyard site. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the heroes, and an innovative Fiano is being pioneered.

In the absence of a cellar door, the wines are sold through online, and can also be found in independent retail stores and restaurants around Australia.

Description

Karribindi has been growing grapes since the 1990s and making wine under their own label since 2005. The small, family-owned property takes its name from two Ngoongar (local aboriginal) words, Karri meaning strong, special, spiritual, tall tree and Bindi meaning butterfly. It was inspired by the nearby Boyanup Karri Forest and one of the owner’s home towns, Bindi Bindi.

The Wines
The Karribindi range includes Margaret River’s signature wines with a focus on the whites; Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Chardonnay. The wines are regular 90+ scoring wines with James Halliday.

Founded in 2001, Larrikins reflects the mischievous personalities of the McCoy family, who make boutique wine and extra virgin olive oil under the label.

Description

Morlet is a boutique vineyard in Cowaramup, managed with meticulous viticulture and a focus on sustainable farming. The vineyard includes two blocks planted in 1998 and 2000 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Zinfandel.

The Wines
The handpicked wines are made with uncompromising quality, matured only in French and American oak. Unique to the label are the Rosé wines. The Filly’s Folly Zinfandel Rosé is a sweeter style with a zippy ferment-induced fizz, while the Pat Nat is made from the ancient ‘petillant naturel’ fermenting technique for sparkling wine, known for its interesting residual flavours and body.

There is no cellar door however the wines can be found at selected Perth retailers, farmer’s markets, annual events and via the Morlet Wines website.

Description

Night Harvest was established in 2005 by Andy and Mandy Ferreira, who arrived in the Margaret River region as newlyweds in 1986. Today they make wines four vineyards (and a few specialised growers) in the region to make their wine range, which began in 2005. The name comes from another part of their business as one of Margaret River’s main contract harvest companies, who support the harvests of over 100 sites in the South-West of Australia each vintage.

Night Harvest Wines is now owned by Andy Ferreira, grower Rob Tincey and entrepreneur Ray Anderson. 

The Wines

Made by Bruce Dukes, a winemaker known for his minimal intervention approach, the label includes Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Cabernet Merlot, Rose, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chardonnay. Wines can be purchased online or at a variety of stockists throughout Western Australia.

Description

In 2000, siblings Cath and Russ Oates made a red blend in their farm shed to share with friends and family. The grapes came from the ends of the vine rows the machine harvester couldn’t pick, hence the name. Fruit was picked from various blocks and varieties around the region and added to the ferment until there was sufficient volume for a barrel or two. That’s how Oates Ends was born.

A decade later and with an impressive international winemaking career behind her, Cath decided it was time to make wines to capture the evident quality of the family’s Wilangri vineyard, first planted in 1999. Oates Ends was reborn.

The vineyard grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc on complex loam soils over deep well draining gravels, producing fine, elegant, structured wines. Careful management and hand harvesting of fruit enables the finest detailed winemaking approach. The vineyard is run with sustainable principles. The wine range includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon.

A new winery and cellar door facility is under development.  Vineyard Tours are available by appointment

Description

After a Christmas trip to Australia in 2009, Tony and Daphne Spikins became enamoured with the stunning Minot Estate, and purchased 8 of its 10 acres to begin their collective winemaking venture. With regionally acclaimed winemaker Bernie Stanlake and vineyard manager Ken Miles at the helm, Wrenoir (Pip's Vineyard's label) wines are produced from estate-grown fruits of excellent pedigree and provenance. 

An ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon and zesty Semillon Sauvignon Blanc are produced by the estate under its Wrenoir label. Wines can be purchased online.

Description

Preveli Wines is a hand-crafted, small, family vineyard in Rosa Brook. Prevelly is where the Home family has lived now for three generations. They also own and run the Prevelly Caravan Park and the general / liquor store where Preveli Wines are available for tasting.

The Prevelly name comes from a monastery in Crete, named Preveli, which aided several Australian soldiers, trying to escape the Germans in WWII. One of the young men, Corporal Geoff Edwards settled in the Margaret River seaside hamlet, calling it Prevelly in commemoration.

The Wines
The range includes a sparkling, sauvignon blanc, rose, pinot noir, cabernet merlot and cabernet sauvignon. They are 100% estate grown, with a focus on sustainable viticulture practices.

Wine Tasting
The store is open every day of the year except Christmas day to taste the wines with passionate and knowledgeable vigneron, Greg Home. (Greg also serves a wicked coffee!)

Description

Owned by the Saraceni family, whose origins in the wine industry began with a fine wine importing business. In 1998 they began making wines of their own under the Saracen label. Saracen Estates aims to produce premium wines that rank among Australia’s best, and the many awards and accolades received in their short history are a testament to this.

The wines come from selected vineyard parcels in Margaret River and are made in a modern facility in the region. Sauvignon Blanc (and blends), Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are made along with a traditional method Sparkling called ‘Maree’.

Recent awards include a Gold Medal at the Decenter World Wine Awards (2018) for the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The sparkling Maree was a Top 5 Finalist for Sparkling Wine of the Year by Winestate (2017).

With an upbringing in both eastern and western cultures, Charmaine Saw has combined a passion for natural science and management to operate her family’s Umamu vineyard. First planted in 1978, the vineyard is viewed as an ecosystem of vines, crops, flora and fauna which inhabit the area. In line with the estate's ideals of balance and harmony, sustainable and environmentally responsible principles are followed in order to grow healthy, high quality fruit.

Description

Walsh & Sons is a family-owned winery creating small batches of wine with big personalities. The winery was created by husband and wife team Ryan Walsh and Freya Hohnen who have a lifetime of agriculture and viticulture pedigree between them and the wines themselves are named after the pair’s children, nieces and nephews.

The wines are made using traditional methods in the vineyard and natural winemaking techniques in order to create expressive styles that are fun, youthful and different to the mainstream. 

The wines focus on technique over technology, represented in an interesting collection of blends reimagining popular Margaret River varieties with new energy and curiosity.
