Description

Planted in 1996, Cape Grace is a proud ‘little winery’ in Margaret River owned by Robert & Karri-Davies, whose family has been part of the local community since 1875. The hand-crafted, single-vineyard wines are grown in their organically-managed property in Wilybrup, a site surrounded by natural forest.

The Wines
All of Margaret River’s signature varieties are made, along with a Chenin and a sparkling Chenin. All wines are made using traditional processes and the highly-awarded reds are hand plunged and basket-pressed.

Wine Tasting
One of the region’s quaint and rustic wineries, with a tin-shed-in-the-forest setting. Karen and Robert are behind the cellar door counter more often than not, providing the opportunity to ‘meet the maker’ and learn the ins and outs of being a small winemaker in Margaret River. During vintage (February – April) visitors may see some fermenting action in the winery and in spring (September – October) there’s also stunning wildflowers.

Unique Highlights
The wine storage area you enter through IS the right entrance! Look out for Robert’s photographs and paraphernalia on display including Robert’s private collection of Australian parrots in a natural bush setting. We are dog friendly and have a childens play area.

Description

Carpe Diem is the heart-warming winery of Gianfranco and Francesco Anderle, a delightful winemaking family who visited Margaret River in 2000, fell in love with the region and sold up their assets to chase their dreams with a 75 hectare property in Wilyabrup. Hence the name, Carpe Diem!

The Wines
Winemaker Gianfranco trained at the world’s oldest wine school in Europe, Conegliano in Northern Italy. He brings a strong European approach to his winemaking, every aspect of which he does in his custom-built winery, including hand-bottling his wines. Italian varieties are the focus such as pinot grigio, schiaffo, vermentino, nebiolo and decantato. 

Wine Tasting
Known for the beautiful Italian hospitality, Gianfranco and Francesca love meeting their guests and personally providing complimentary tastings of all the wines from their winery-based tasting table. Look out for a few small-batch special release wines are available exclusively at the cellar door from time to time.

Description

First planted in 1976, Clairault Streicker has grown from a modest 4-hectare vineyard to a 200-hectare estate, incorporating four premium vineyards throughout Margaret River. The estate maintains an exceptional track record for its wines, which are grown following natural, biological farming principles.

Clairault Steicker combines two unique Margaret River wine stories. Streicker Wines began with a Yallingup vineyard in 2002, acquired by US native John Streicker who was so taken with the local lifestyle, sustainable viticulture ethos and world-class wines when visiting in 2001 that he decided to pursue his wine dreams in Margaret River. In 2012, historic estate Clairault Wines became part of the Streicker portfolio. Major enhancements have been made to all vineyard management to continually improve fruit and wine quality.

The Wines
The wine range celebrates the diversity of Margaret River’s hero varieties when grown in different areas of the wine appellation, with highlights including a single vineyard Cabernet made from 40 year old Wilyabrup vines and a cool-climate looking Syrah from Wallcliffe. It is a pure and unique journey through terroir in Margaret River. Look out for a few niche varieties in the mix too.

Wine Tasting
Follow a scenic driveway off Caves Road through farm land and native forest to the contemporary cellar door. A relaxing environment to discover the premium wines, it also offers a selection of house made produce available for sale. Private tours and tastings can be arranged in advance. Open 10am-5pm daily.

The Food
The Clairault Streicker Café serves up a selection of modern Australian share-plates for lunch daily. The menu showcases excellent produce, served simply, ideal for those who enjoy less formal dining. For the ultimate indulgence, spend an afternoon with the 5 course long lunch. A gorgeous stone fire-place makes for cosy dining in winter, while in summer, a picnic blanket in the gardens makes for a blissful lunch setting.

Devil's Lair

Description

The Cave is recognised as one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites, holding evidence of life from 50,000 years ago. It was here that Phil Sexton, then an archaeology student and later Devil’s Lair founder and WA hospitality legend, found himself considering the idea of creating a wine label. In 1981 Phil purchased land nearby and the Devil’s Lair wine story began.

Devil’s Lair is known for its meticulous winemaking standards and environmentally focused viticulture. Their efforts towards sustainability have earnt them national Entwine accreditation. For every hectare of vineyard planted on the property, there is 1.14 hectares of natural vegetation retained or planted.

The Wines
The Devil’s Lair winemaking philosophy is to be meticulous, to continually question and challenge, and to refine a winemaking style that is as much about intuition as science. The label focuses on the varieties that fare best in Margaret River. Their chardonnays are known for their taut acidity, minerality, length and subtle oak, while the Cabernet is typically complex and layered with lively aromas. Three tiers enable all budgets to find their perfect Margaret River wine.

Description

Chalice Bridge is the second largest single vineyard in Margaret River. It is family owned and operated by Jason and Alecia Brown. The Chalice Bridge name comes from the bridge over the Upper Chapman Brook, which runs through the middle of the vineyard.

The vineyard was established two decades ago with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. 

The Wines
The wines reflect the cool climate characteristics, poise and purity of southern Margaret River fruit. Three wine ranges of Margaret River’s signature varieties are made; The Estate, The Quest and The Chalice.

Description

A family owned winery established by Rob Glass and Jessica Worrall which connects their professional backgrounds and passion for wine. They began with a small vineyard in Geographe in 2000, expanding when they found their ‘dream vineyard’ in Margaret River two years later. Surrounded by rolling hills, the site’s sandy loam soils are great for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The Wines
Firetail produces premium varietal wines from estate-grown grapes in Margaret River and Geographe. The vines receive the fastidious attention of the vineyard workers throughout the year with the team working hard to at produce the best quality, intense and flavoured grapes. The range includes a sparkling, still red and white wines and a dessert wine.

Description

Flinders Bay makes its wines from their vineyard in Karridale, located nearby Flinders bay, where the climate is distinctly cooler. Scientific data suggests it may be Western Australia’s coolest grape growing area. The vineyard is planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The vineyard is run with the sole focus of growing the highest quality grapes and natural farming methods are utilised where possible.

The Wines
Over 10 different wines are made, including dry to sweet still whites, a rosé, reds and a traditional method NV sparkling. The wines are available through local retailers.

Description

Owners Sasha and Ben McDonald refer to the southern Karridale sub-region as the ‘cooler sister’ to the rest of the Margaret River cape. Their winery brings this cool to life in both the style of its wines and the estate vibe. Ben is the fifth generation on the McDonald family farm. He single-handedly planted the 6-acre vineyard when aged 19 and has continued to evolve his family farm since. In addition to vines, the property has over 270 fruit trees, several vegetable gardens and a few thousand sheep.

The property follows sustainable farming practices to encourage a healthy eco-system, with all elements coexisting to improve the overall heartbeat of the farm. Sheep graze among the vines for six months after harvest to control the weeds and add nutrients into the cycle. Bug pressure is taken care of by guinea fowls and chickens.

The Wines
The wines are handmade with an intuitive, hands-off approach and every parcel of fruit is managed individually through the winemaking process. Natural yeasts are used for authentic, characterful wines. Often their trusty old basket press is used, making for a true artisanal feel. Alongside Margaret River signature varieties, check out the intriguing Fumé Blanc, Rosé and Vintage Port.

Wine Tasting
The pair converted their grandfather’s timber shed into a tasting room which is open daily from 10am – 5pm Thursday to Monday to taste their wines. Tuesday and Wednesday tastings by appointment.

The Food
A range of tasting plates, bursting with tasty interpretations of the farm’s fresh-picked seasonal produce, incredible grass-fed lamb and whatever seafood has been caught off the shores of Augusta by their sea mates. Vegetarian and dietary options are catered for.

Unique Highlights
Get the true farm experience with a progressive tasting through the vines, macadamias and hop garden to gain a local’s understanding of what a ‘ground to glass’ philosophy truly entails. The tour is extra special from January to April during harvest. Bookings recommended, begins 10:30am daily.

Gralyn Estate opened the region's first cellar door in 1978. Today's modern tasting room is a popular tourist destination situated on Caves Road Wilyabrup, in the heart of the Margaret River wine region.

 

Gralyn produces both dry and sweet wines and pioneered the region's first port styles in 1978. The Estate is family owned and operated and wines can only be purchased from their Cellar Door or their website. The Harmans Estate team scour the region for unique parcels of fruit to make single vineyard wines that display a strong sense of place. Established in 1999 the family-owned small-batch winery is one of the only producers in Margaret River that process, produce, bottle and label wines all on site to control all aspects of quality.

The Wines
In addition to Margaret River’s classic varieties, look out for a unique Shiraz Tempranillo and Sparkling Pink Pinot Noir. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc Liqueurs are some of the only of their kind in Margaret River and the wine-based spirits are seriously unique too.

Wine Tasting
The entire wine, liqueur and spirits collection is available for tasting daily at the cellar door between 10am – 5pm.

Unique Highlights
The Harmans Estate winemakers love a creative challenge and set out to make Australia’s first Pisco. The range includes three noteworthy flavours. The Gin Gin Gin is crafted from barrel-fermented Gin Gin clone chardonnay (a mysterious clone that found its way to the Margaret River region and now dominates). This truly unique gin is triple distilled and infused with Certified Organic botanicals. Perhaps the rarest Gin in the world, with only 128 bottles made.

Hay Shed Hill Wines

Hay Shed Hill is one of the oldest vineyards in the region. Centrally located in Wilyabrup, the heart of the Margaret River Wine Region.

The Howard Park cellar door is a must-see destination in Margaret River, as one of the foremost architectural buildings in the region. The visitor experience is the culmination of one family’s vision, two generations, two wine regions and four vineyards.

Howard Park is the biggest producer of sparkling wines in West Australia, and the only winery in Margaret River to make Champagne-method in-house.

The winery was commended for its architecture by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 2000, and judged among the nation’s top 12 buildings by The Sydney Morning Herald. It incorporates traditional Feng shui principles with a contemporary Australian aesthetic.

Calling two wine regions home – Margaret River and Great Southern – has allowed Howard Park to emerge as an Australian leader in crafting Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and methode traditionelle sparkling wines.

Jarvis Estate was established in 1997 and sits on prime land in Bramley, between Margaret River and Cowaramup, just 8km from the coast. A small, family-owned winery, it makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Verdehlo and one of Margaret River’s best Cabernet Francs.

Wine Tasting

While a custom designed cellar door has been open for a couple of years, owners Matt and Jackie prefer the vineyard tours and tastings, which often include the rare opportunity to taste barrel samples of soon-to-be-released wines. Contact the winery directly for bookings.

One of WA’s most awarded winemakers, Larry Cherubino Wines makes an expressive range from a collection of estate-owned vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton and the Great Southern (Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup areas). The label began in Frankland River in 2004 when Larry and wife, Edwina purchased an historic property called Riversdale. The inaugural 2005 vintage wines were made in the family’s spare room! These days they are made in a well-equipped winery in Margaret River.

Larry Cherubino Wines was named James Halliday’s Australian Winery of the Year in 2011, and also Australia’s Best-Value Winery by Halliday in 2017. Winemaker Larry Cherubino has a string of Winemaker of the Year nominations with leading Australian and UK wine media.

The Wines
Following the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard, Larry Cherubino Wines are made from six specialty vineyards in Western Australia’s leading south-west wine regions. The wines are estate-grown and the vineyards follow a mix of principles from the schools of organics and traditional farming with the aim to encourage the vines to exist in a healthy ecosystem, for plant health. The range has a characterful selection of site-driven examples of Riesling and Chardonnay, alongside alternative varieties including Fiano and Pinot Blanc. Classic Cabernet and Shiraz are made too.

Wine Tasting
Enjoy a seasonal range of wines for tasting at all times alongside a selection of cellar door exclusives. An enomatic machine holds a curated range of rare back vintage wines which can be enjoyed as educational (and highly enjoyable) flights. Private tastings in the board room or barrel room can be booked in advance for groups. Antipasti and dinners are available by special arrangement.

If you want a good laugh, ask Larry about the dog in the bedroom incident. It all happened to a mate of his apparently!!

Lenton Brae was established by the Tomlinson Family, who sought help in selecting their site from Moss Wood founder Bill Pannell. The Wines
Lenton Brae excels in the Margaret River specialities of Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are consistently recognised as being amongst the best of their type, with awards at regional, state and national competitions. All production takes place onsite and is 100% handpicked, with the wines made in small batches with minimal intervention. Margaret River’s famous Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend has a long history at the estate and in 2016 celebrated 30 consecutive vintages of the wine.

Wine Tasting
Taste the wine range from a unique viewing platform that overlooks the fully-operating winery. For something extra special, the $10 experience includes a tour of the winery and tasting in the barrel room and is available Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Unique Highlights
Five locally-made bells are housed in the cellar door’s stunning bell towers. They chime on the quarter hour with the well-known Westminster Chimes, associated with Grandfather clocks and London’s Big Ben.

We always have fizz on pour, like the MadFish Vera’s Sparkling Cuvée and Prosecco, both made by us with specialist equipment in-house.

Set on 138 hectares of native bushland less than 5 minutes from the town of Cowaramup, the property is a spectacular place to witness the changing of the seasons. The winding tree-lined driveway passes a traditional old settler cottage and the famous Willyabrup Creek on its way to the cellar door.

The cellar door is surrounded by spacious lawn areas, where you can bring a picnic, borrow a bocce set and enjoy a glass or bottle of wine under the sun. In winter, cosy up inside on the couches with a wine by the fire. The building itself is a must-see example of award-winning architecture, built according to Feng Shui principles.

Our contemporary, cool climate wine styles are noted for their pure, fresh and clean characteristics, where the flavour of the fruit is the primary character.

Moss Wood was established as a specialist, high-quality vineyard and winery. This was its raison d’être and continues to provide the motivation for its existence.

Clare & Keith Mugford, have been tending the vineyard and making wine at Moss Wood since 1984 and 1979, respectively. They believe that all decisions made in the vineyard and winery underpin the quality of the wine.

The Moss Wood and Mugford names are synonymous with uncompromising quality.

Description

The story behind the name of this Margaret River pioneer dates back 100 years. It’s alleged that prior to the vines, the site was a dairy farm, whose ‘prominent red gate’ was known locally as the place to buy (illegal) home-distilled spirits. Incidentally, the property is nearby to Redgate Beach, so founder Bill Ullinger thought the name to be fitting on all fronts!

The vineyard was established in 1977, with 20 acres of vines planted. Over time, the family owned estate has grown into a 55 acre vineyard, operating its own winery, cellar door and maintaining an enviable reputation for its boutique, premium wines.

The Wines
Since the early vintages of the 1980s, Redgate’s handcrafted wines have received countless awards. In addition to its regional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnays, Redgate makes Rose, Sparkling and a series of three luscious dessert wines, including a rare fortified Shiraz named in honour of founder, Bill.

Description

Sandalford has been making superb West Australian wines for over 175 years. While the primary property is in the Swan Valley, the Margaret River cellar door is worth visiting, a cleverly-designed space made from rammed earth, surrounded by beautiful, country gardens, vines and native forest. Open daily from 10am to 5pm, a pergola and onsite BBQs make Sandalford a lovely place for a picnic with the family.

A Notable History
Sandalford was established in 1840 in the early days of the Perth colony’s settlement. The property was granted to WA’s first Surveyor General John Septimus Roe by Queen Victoria, to honour his 57 years of Service to the Commonwealth. He named it Sandalford after a priory in his original home of Birkshire, England.

The property had a diverse agricultural history and originally thrived growing table grapes, which became a lucrative export. Winemaking accelerated after World War II with a growing community of Croatian and Italian migrants bringing vast knowledge and techniques to the young Swan Valley wine industry. In 1970 the Roe family expanded to Margaret River, planting a vineyard on prime land in Wilyabrup.

In 1990, Sandalford was acquired by the Prendiville family, who own a portfolio of iconic tourism and hospitality establishments around WA. The Prendiville’s have invested significantly in the brand, the wines and the impressive estate.

The Wines
Sandalford makes five ranges of wines from its vineyards in the Swan Valley and Margaret River. There are over 25 wines, including sparkling, red, white, dessert and fortified wines. The winery incorporates the state-of-the-art-technology, while retaining winemaking traditions, such as small batch fruit processing and using the best quality French and American oak.

Wine Tasting
The entire Sandalford wine range (and often some other special wines) can be tasted at their Margaret River cellar door and grand Swan Valley estate. The Margaret River cellar door is a cleverly-designed space, made from rammed earth. It is surrounded by beautiful, country gardens, vines and native forest.

Settlers Ridge makes a comprehensive range of 100% certified organic wines. In addition, the wines are vegetarian (many are vegan friendly), asthma and allergy friendly and virtually preservative free. The small family-owned vineyard was planted in 1994 and over the years has won numerous awards in mainstream wine shows, dispelling any perceptions that quality may be compromised with organic methods.

Description

Southern Cross Certified Organic since 2016, this boutique winery is known for superb-quality, sustainably made wines from their exceptional vineyard in Wilyabrup. The vineyard was planted in the mid-1990s. Stormflower acquired the property in 2007 progressed along the path of natural vineyard management, culminating in organic certification. The wines are textural and structured and perfect for pairing with food. Cellar Door

The minimalist, understated cellar door continues the sustainable philosophy, with its natural feel and tasting table made from a Marri tree that blew down during a storm in 2013. Unique Highlights
In the warmer summer months, keep a look out for the garden’s ripe raspberries, strawberries, currants, blueberries, mulberries and gooseberries that can be picked and enjoyed. Vasse Felix's wines reflect the varietal strengths of Margaret River, with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, as well as Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon blends.  All wines are vinified with minimal intervention and bottled within the Estate’s modern winery, situated at their Home Vineyard overlooking the Wilyabrup Brook. The Vasse Felix winemaking philosophy is founded on the beliefs that great wines are made in the vineyard, must be authentic expressions of their place, and are the work of a great team of passionate people.

Wine Tasting

The Vasse Felix Cellar Door - also located at the Home Vineyard - is renowned and offers a range of experiences. Enjoy a classic over the counter wine tasting or self-paced seated option, alternatively linger in the chic wine lounge over a glass of wine or wine flight with charcuterie. A range of historic vintages are available by the glass also. No trip to Margaret River is complete without a visit, tour or tasting at the Vasse Felix Cellar Door. Open 10am-5pm daily. 

For a more bespoke experience, book a behind the scenes, epicurean tour or fill a day with Vasse Felix’s Cape to Vine tour, operated in collaboration with local guide Cape to Cape Explorer Tours.

The Food

A national benchmark winery restaurant, Vasse Felix Chef Brendan Pratt creates modern cuisine with a strong focus on local, seasonal produce and a clever balance of artistry and simplicity to complement the Wine Collection. While bookings are recommended, a few walk-in seats can be snapped up at the chef’s table. Open for lunch daily 12pm - 3pm.

Unique Highlights

Aside from visiting the region’s oldest vines, explore the wow-factor museum space - The Vault, chronicling the history of Vasse Felix and Margaret River in the early days and housing Margaret River's oldest red wine - the 1972 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon. A seasonal program of exhibitions from Australia’s largest private art collection is shown at the Vasse Felix gallery.
