Arimia Winery

Description

A boutique winery that operates ‘off the grid’, Arimia was established in 1997 by Ann Spencer. Located in the north end of Margaret River, it makes the most of its superb environment, surrounded by the untouched Cape Naturaliste National Park and the Indian Ocean, to make an innovative range of estate-grown wines.

The vineyard follows organic practices and grows a diverse mix of grapes, from Margaret River’s classics of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon through to Mourvedre, Zinfandel and Verdehlo.

Wine Tasting

One of the most authentic food and wine experiences to be found in Margaret River,

the acclaimed wine range can be sampled at the relaxed cellar door, built primarily using recycled and plantation timber.

The Food

Awarded ‘Gourmet Traveller Regional Restaurant of the Year’ 2018, Arimia’s menu comes mostly from farm-grown produce including pork and trout raised on the 55ha property. The kitchen, headed by chef Evan Hayter is dedicated to utilising entire animals, with a no-waste approach that encourages creativity. Bookings are highly recommended. Open Thursday to Tuesday for lunch.

Description

This delightful winery is located in the heart of Margaret River. Owners Noni and Bill Ilic are hands-on in all aspects of the business, from planting and tending the vines, winemaking and hand-selling their wines from the cellar door. Making premium wines is their passion, which happens to also be their business.

The Wines
The Beckett’s Flat vineyard was first planted in 1992. The vineyard is managed primarily with organic practices and the wines are all made on site in the pair’s small, but well-equipped winery.

Early success in Australian and overseas wine shows led the Ilic’s to focus their wines style toward making delicious, food-friendly, early drinking wines that are fruit-driven and elegant. The stunning range includes diverse styles from traditional method Sparkling White and Rosé to dry, crisp and fruity whites, elegant reds and even a White Port. Their Five Stones label is recognised for producing Australia’s finest Kosher and vegan-friendly wines.

Wine Tasting
The boutique Cellar Door is located just off Bussell Highway and open daily most days. Be sure to greet the doorman ‘Raff’, a Sable German Shephard. He especially loves visitors that throw a stick for him. Wines are very reasonably priced with generous case specials too. Cellar door open 10am to 5pm

Unique Highlights
Owner / Winemaker Bill’s other passion is photography and he has studied under renowned US photographers Fred Picker (Zone VI) and George de Wolfe. The cellar door doubles as a gallery showcasing Bill’s stunning images of the region in all its natural glory. A selection of old cameras and photographic equipment are exhibited too.

Bettenay Wines

The ultimate destination to indulge in medal-winning Margaret River wines and over 32 flavours of house-made nougat, in addition to WA’s only nougat flavoured liqueur collection.

Description

Located in the Wilyabrup area of Margaret River, Bettenay Wines specialises in two of life’s delicacies; wine and nougat. The wines are made from their 25 acre vineyard which grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot and Shiraz. Varietal wines of these varieties are made along with a sweeter style white blend. All wines are made onsite.

Unique to Bettenay Wines is their liqueur collection, particularly the Nougaretto collection which includes Honey and Almond Nougat Liqueur and Coffee and Almond Liqueur. An impressive 32 different nougat flavours are made at the estate.

Wine & Nougat Tastings

Indulge in the full range of fine wines, liqueurs and nougat at the Bettenay Wines tasting room. Modern and with a viewing room to see the nougat production in process, the inviting space is open daily, 9.30am – 5pm. Group tastings can be arranged in advance.

Burnside Organic Wines

A family-owned and operated certified organic and biodynamic farm and vineyard making Vermention and Zinfandel in various forms and growing amazing produce that can be found at the local markets.

Description

Established in 2011 by Jamie and Lara McCall, this small family winery is organic and biodynamic with Australian Certified Organic and has been for over 15 years. The farm's dry-grown, north-facing vineyards are managed by hand and the fruit is hand-picked by the McCalls each vintage, reflecting the estate's family values and close attention to detail. 

The Wines

A Zinfandel and Zinfandel Rose are made, taking inspiration from David Hohnen’s original plantings at Cape Mentelle in the 1970s. Vermentino is made in still and sparkling styles.  Wines can be purchased from stockists throughout Western Australia or at the farm by appointment only. 

Unique Highlights

Burnside Organic Wines is also home to four rammed-earth bungalows featuring solid limestone walls, charming firepits and sweeping views of the Burnside Organic Farm. The Farm also grows meat and poultry, eggs, fruit and vegetables, honey and wine. The produce can often be found at the Margaret River Farmer’s Markets on Saturday mornings.

 

Fermoy Estate

Named ‘Best Cabernet in the World’ in Paris, 2015, this longstanding and humble estate is full of pleasant surprises, to be enjoyed at its European countryside-inspired cellar door.

Description

When Danish Royalty get married, they choose Fermoy Cabernet. Prince Mary and Prince Frederick of Denmark did just that, enjoying the fine wine over dinner at their wedding in May 2004.

Fermoy has an enviable reputation around Australia for its wines, which have been grown and made at its Metricup Road property since 1988 (planted in 1985). Fermoy’s Margaret River’s hero varieties have received a tonne of accolades over the years, culminating in the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon being named ‘Best Cabernet in the World’ at the coveted Competitions de Cabernets in Paris, 2015.

Wine Tastings

Fairytale meets contemporary architecture at the cellar door, located nearby more esteemed and iconic Margaret River estates. Enjoy a complimentary tasting of the range or bring a picnic to enjoy with Fermoy wines under the leafy trees of the relaxing front lawn. Groups are invited to book in for a private tasting to gain a more intimate knowledge of the winery. Look out for a museum release wines that are made available at the cellar door from time to time.

Description

 

Established in 2017, the Haywood Wine Company is located at the Island Brook Estate to the north of the Margaret River wine region. The Metricup vineyard was first planted in 1985, utilising specific grape varieties to match the property's well drained gravel loam soils.

The wines made include Cabernet Rose, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cellar Door

The charm of this family operation is evident in its relaxed cellar door; where you can meet the grape grower, winemaker and marketing director all at once! Open Monday to Saturday 10am - 5pm.

The Island Brook chalets are located amidst vineyards and jarrah forest, and offer a secluded, peaceful getaway for wine-lovers.

Description

Brad and Sarah Mitchell, the husband and wife team behind The Alchemists were originally metallurgists. They realised they could combine their love of chemistry, compound formulas and fine wines in the sacred science of transforming the humble grape into a divine elixir.

Brad and Sarah Michel purchased their vineyard in 2007 and after a few years experimenting, released their first serious vintage in 2010, making Rose, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each of those wines won awards in various wine shows around the country, which gave the pair great confidence to keep the alchemy going.

The Wines
The Alchemists utilise both traditional and modern winemaking to make their wines, which are grown on their estate vineyard. The wines are full of regional flavour, with balance, complexity and restraint. The vineyard is managed using organic principles, with sheep maintaining the weeds in winter and guinea fowls and chickens minimising bugs throughout the year. All signature Margaret River varieties are produced.
