Description

Named Gourmet Traveller WINE’s Star Cellar Door (2017), this relative new-comer estate has elevated itself into one of Margaret River’s prized wine destinations.

Amelia Park Wines began in 2009 led by coveted winemaker Jeremy Gordon, producing a hand-crafted wine range with grapes from Margaret River and Frankland River. Jeremy is well-known for his detailed approach and a highly celebrated tenure at Flametree Wines, during which time his Cabernet Merlot won Australia’s most coveted wine award, the Jimmy Watson Trophy.

The Wines

Amelia Park Wines range from highly-drinkable to collectable styles, with a focus on Margaret River’s signature varieties. Immense critical acclaim has been received since day one, including awards at the International Wine Challenge and Decanter Wine Awards for the Cabernet Sauvignons and Shiraz, in particular.

Wine Tasting

The architecturally designed cellar door makes a dramatic statement with its bold, decorative interiors and stunning views over the Wilyabrup Valley. Wine tastings are available daily or for more of a culinary experience, enjoy a wine flights paired with cheese and charcuterie in the ambient Cellar Door Barrel Room. Tours and private tastings can be booked in advance. 

The Food

A French-bistro inspired lunch menu is available daily at the Amelia Park Restaurant, where a wood fired oven and grill is centrepiece to much of the food. The cuisine is modern and seasonal with a focus toward locally-sourced produce. It is operated by local hospitality legends, the Gold Plate awarded Blair and Renee Allen who were previous owners of Dunsborough favourite, Piari & Co.

Visiting on a Sunday? Start your day a with pre-wine tasting breakfast at the Amelia Park Restaurant, open from 8.30am. Amelia Park also operates a Lodge in northern Margaret River, a stylish and family-friendly tavern offering drinks and simple cuisine.

Description

In 1995 Trevor and Lyn Mann decided it was time for a sea change, relocating to Margaret River in pursuit of an adventure in viticulture. With their experience limited to sampling plenty of the product, but armed with a vision and loads of self-belief, they dived straight into their new journey and planted 10,000 young vines of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The first harvest in 1999 was a momentous occasion.

The vineyard follows biological farming principles and the wines are 100% estate grown and made. The team believe it’s the small things that make the big difference and make their wines extra special. These days daughter Bronnley Cahill is in the winemaking driver’s seat.

The Wines
Taking the best of the old world and new world approaches to winemaking, Brookwood Estate makes wines with minimal intervention to capture the essence of their vineyard. The range includes sweet through to dry wines sparkling.

Wine Tasting
Relaxed, fun and informative tastings are hosted in the wrought iron and wood cellar door daily from 11am to 4.30pm. A selection of gourmet produce including dukkah and local extra virgin olive oil is available for tasting as well. Group bookings can be arranged in advance, starting from $5 per guest.

The Food
The winery café/restaurant is a hidden gem in the region, serving a delicious and generous contemporary Australian menu to pair with the Brookwood Estate Wines. Relax on the verandah and take in sweeping vineyard views while you dine, open 11am to 3pm. (It’s enclosed and cosy in winter.)

Description

Brygon Reserve Wines is a dynamic winery which began in 2009. It won a staggering four trophies in wine shows in its debut year at the Sydney International Wine Competition, Qantas Wine Show and Sydney Royal Wine Show for ‘Best Red Wine’. Several more trophies have been received for its white wines. Over 400 awards have been received historically. It was voted a Top 10 New Winery (2012) by James Halliday’s Wine Companion.

The wines are made with state-of-the-art techniques. The comprehensive range includes over 20 different wines, mostly focused on the Margaret River varieties; Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends. There are 11 labels, including Third Wheel, Third Wheel Reserve, The Bruce, Hummingbird and Lions Lair.

Located just north of Margaret River nearby the popular Colonial Brewing Co is the modern cellar door which opened in 2015 and offers tastings of the wines from 11am – 5pm daily.

Description

In 2000, owners Michael & Kim O’Brien chose Margaret River as the place in which to establish Celestial Bay and turned their dream into a reality with the purchase of 210 acres. Now led by the second generation of the O’Brien family, this small winery has grown to become an international exporter with a string of accolades to its name.

The Wines
The contemporary wine range is made by son Aaron O’Brien, a qualified winemaker and viticulturist who has worked vintages all around the world. The range focuses on Margaret River’s primary varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Blends.

Description

This family owned, single-vineyard property was established in 1999. The Fokkema family selected the site for its ideal gravel loam soils, ample clean water and northern-facing slopes. The vineyard has been farmed organically for 15 years and is in the process of completing its ‘Certified Organic’ accreditation.

The Churchview vineyard is known to grow Margaret River’s most extensive amount of varieties within a single vineyard, with sixteen different types of grapes planted.

The Wines
The wines are made onsite at the property’s winery. Many are matured in oak, and Churchview prides itself on investing in the best quality French oak. Four wine ranges are made from the diverse varieties within the vineyard and offer easy drinking through to rare and fine collector wines. All the classic Margaret River varieties are made. The St Johns range features less-common varieties including a Zinfandel, Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Viognier and Marsanne.

Wine Tasting
The diverse wine range can be tasted at the Cellar Door which is located within a period cottage at the estate. The Heritage Listed St John the Baptist Anglican Church can be seen from the tasting room, hence the name. Many of the wines cannot be found for purchase anywhere other than the cellar door. Allow 30 minutes for a full tasting. Open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday.

Dogs are welcome (on leash) and visitors are invited to bring a picnic and make a day of enjoying the beautiful wines, stunning vineyard views and manicured gardens.

Unique Highlights
Those seeking curio wines will love discovering the wild fermented Riesling, Viognier and Chenin Blanc; varieties not often seen in Margaret River.

Located on the upper reaches of Ellensbrook between Cowaramup and the coast is this family-run property, established by Russell and Marilyn Reynolds, with wines created by their sons Cameron (Viticulturist) and Anthony (Winemaker).

Since 2001 the vineyard has followed biodynamic and organic principles to maintain quality and unique personality within the wines. They follow the traditional belief that a vineyard should show the characteristics that come from the unique elements that make up the ‘terroir’ of the individual site and that biodynamics is the best approach through which to achieve this.

The Clown Fish Wines are handcrafted from 100% estate grown fruit, sourced from the family vineyard. These site-expressive wines showcase the individuality of the vineyard’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon with personality and regional flair.

Description

When Danish Royalty get married, they choose Fermoy Cabernet. Prince Mary and Prince Frederick of Denmark did just that, enjoying the fine wine over dinner at their wedding in May 2004.

Fermoy has an enviable reputation around Australia for its wines, which have been grown and made at its Metricup Road property since 1988 (planted in 1985). Fermoy’s Margaret River’s hero varieties have received a tonne of accolades over the years, culminating in the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon being named ‘Best Cabernet in the World’ at the coveted Competitions de Cabernets in Paris, 2015.

Wine Tastings

Fairytale meets contemporary architecture at the cellar door, located nearby more esteemed and iconic Margaret River estates. Description

Set on 165 acres, Fishbone Cellar Door and Japanese Restaurant is part of Fishbone Wines farm and planted with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Tempranillo. The vineyard setting is typical to the Margaret River region, north facing with a combination of loam and sandy pea gravel with a well-drained soil structure. The focus is on stripped back, raw quality winemaking, which is what the Fishbone symbol represents.

Wine Tasting

Nestled in the Cowaramup Brook valley and the lee of the Leeuwin Ridge in the Margaret River sub region of Wilyabrup, Grace Farm is a small, family-owned vineyard that uses organic principles to produce premium handcrafted wines.

Owned by John and Elizabeth Mair, Grace Farm was planted in 2006 and the first vintage produced in 2010. Grace Farm was one of the first vineyards in the district to plant the vines into weed-matting, avoiding the use of herbicide sprays which often accompany vineyard establishment. The Mair family has a keen interest in the unique biodiversity values present on Grace Farm. Floristic and avian fauna surveys have been carried out and monitoring of populations is ongoing. 

The farmhouse was designed according to solar passive design principles and supports a roof-top solar array which feeds excess power back into the electricity grid, helping to reduce the property’s carbon footprint.

The Wines

The award-winning range includes a barrel-matured Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Burgundian style Chardonnay and two quintessential Margaret River style Cabernets.

Wine Tastings

Private tastings can be booked. They are held on the deck of the farmhouse in the company of viticulturist Tim Quinlan and include the opportunity to sample all wines while enjoying views over the vineyard and valley. A tour of the vineyard may also be included. Winemaker Jonathan Mettam is often present for larger group bookings.

The Harmans Estate team scour the region for unique parcels of fruit to make single vineyard wines that display a strong sense of place. Established in 1999 the family-owned small-batch winery is one of the only producers in Margaret River that process, produce, bottle and label wines all on site to control all aspects of quality.

In addition to Margaret River’s classic varieties, look out for a unique Shiraz Tempranillo and Sparkling Pink Pinot Noir. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc Liqueurs are some of the only of their kind in Margaret River and the wine-based spirits are seriously unique too.

This truly unique gin is triple distilled and infused with Certified Organic botanicals. Perhaps the rarest Gin in the world, with only 128 bottles made.

Hay Shed Hill is one of a small and prestigious group of pioneer vineyards that have established Margaret River's reputation as a world-class wine producing region. Located in the heart of the Wilyabrup Valley, the premier sub-region of Margaret River, the winery produces single vineyard wines that express the character of this outstanding site. 

Respected winemaker Michael Kerrigan has been at the helm since 2006 and his approach has seen this quiet-achieving pioneer rise to new ranks of critical acclaim. The name Hay Shed Hill was given to the estate in the 1980s, named after the hay shed that remains on the historic World War II group settlement property.

Wine Tasting
One of Margaret River’s more extensive ranges, over 30 wines can be tasted in the Cellar Door daily including Margaret River’s regional classics; Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends, plus some surprises like Tempranillo and Malbec.

The Food
Popular Spanish restaurant, Rustico operates its south-west site from Hay Shed Hill, serving up award-winning tapas, share plates and Mediterranean fare from 11am-5pm daily. Owners Brian and Michelle Lowrie operate a vineyard in Rosa Glen, southern Margaret River, and make Ibizan's range of wines from some of the property's oldest vines including Cabernet planted in 1978. The winery utilises sustainable farming principles to grow its premium grapes.

One of WA’s most awarded winemakers, Larry Cherubino Wines makes an expressive range from a collection of estate-owned vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton and the Great Southern (Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup areas). The label began in Frankland River in 2004 when Larry and wife, Edwina purchased an historic property called Riversdale. The inaugural 2005 vintage wines were made in the family’s spare room! These days they are made in a well-equipped winery in Margaret River.

Larry Cherubino Wines was named James Halliday’s Australian Winery of the Year in 2011, and also Australia’s Best-Value Winery by Halliday in 2017. Winemaker Larry Cherubino has a string of Winemaker of the Year nominations with leading Australian and UK wine media.

The Wines
Following the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard, Larry Cherubino Wines are made from six specialty vineyards in Western Australia’s leading south-west wine regions. The wines are estate-grown and the vineyards follow a mix of principles from the schools of organics and traditional farming with the aim to encourage the vines to exist in a healthy ecosystem, for plant health. The range has a characterful selection of site-driven examples of Riesling and Chardonnay, alongside alternative varieties including Fiano and Pinot Blanc. Classic Cabernet and Shiraz are made too.

Wine Tasting
Enjoy a seasonal range of wines for tasting at all times alongside a selection of cellar door exclusives. An enomatic machine holds a curated range of rare back vintage wines which can be enjoyed as educational (and highly enjoyable) flights. Lenton Brae was established by the Tomlinson Family, who sought help in selecting their site from Moss Wood founder Bill Pannell. McHenry Honen is the fusion of an accomplished fine-wine retailer, Murray McHenry, with one of Margaret River’s most respected pioneers David Hohnen (founder of Cape Mentelle).

Their aim is to make the most site expressive wines they can from their three distinct family vineyards in Margaret River, all of which are 100% biodynamic. Biodynamics revolves around an environmental equilibrium. It is similar to organic farming, in that both preclude the use of chemicals, however biodynamic farming incorporates ideas about a vineyard as an ecosystem, and also accounts for astrological influences and lunar cycles.

The Wines
There is an unwavering focus on making distinct, site expressive wines and on embracing the individual characters that come from the different plots in the vineyards. This is achieved through minimal-intervention using wild yeasts, minimal sulphur, no filtration and large format oak and concrete fermenters. The range includes Margaret River’s specialty varieties and a few unexpected surprises. More than five single-site Chardonnays showcase just how different the flavours of this variety can be because of different site influences in the vineyard.

The cellar door is conveniently located on Caves Road, just five minutes from Margaret River town. The wines can be tasted between 10.30 and 4.30pm daily.

The label of young, award-winning winemaker Rory Clifton Parks, Miles from Nowhere is the renaissance of a vineyard planted in 2001 in Miamup by the Tate family. Description

The Old Kent Yard vineyard is located in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia, with its cellar door in Margaret River. Originally set up in 1952 as a sheep farm, a vineyard area was planted with Pinot Noir in 1985. These days Chardonnay, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc are grown too. Hands-on and down to earth owners, the Noacks, conducted a major rehabilitation scheme across the whole property, including a tree-planting programme, whereby various species of Eucalypt and deep-rooted perennials were planted. 

‘The Farm,’ as known to the family also produces lamb and elusive native marron that are sold at the Cellar Door.

The Wines
Old Kent Road is a serious, cool-climate, single vineyard producer that focuses varietal, regionally expressive wines. The vineyard started out growing fruit for established wine producers. Seeing the great success of their wines, the Noacks decided to produce their own label, releasing a sparkling wine and pinot noir in 1991. These wines achieved a raft of awards and remain the flagships of the Old Kent River range.

Wine Tasting
Since 2017 the winery has operated a rammed-earth cellar door, conveniently located on the corner of Caves and Ellen Brook Road just north of Margaret River town. The whole range of wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern can be tasted. Groups tastings can be booked in advance for groups of 8 or more. Open daily 10am – 5pm. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday in non-peak season.

Unique Highlights
The large lawn has ample picnic tables and blankets for a picturesque picnic. Create a platter from a small selection of local cheese and produce, or pre-order a Gourmet Picnic Hamper by famous local Chef Lainy Mammone (requires 48 hours notice).

Located in Wilyabrup on what is widely respected as some of the finest wine grape growing terrain in the world, Pierro was planted in 1980 by a winemaker who went against the norm, Dr Mike Peterkin.

Pierro’s first wines were made the previous year, including the region’s first known Bordeaux-inspired Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends and a Cabernet Merlot blend with Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

The Wines

Made from two estate-owned vineyards in Wilyabrup, the reds are ranked among the best of the region and the stylish white wines are highly-regarded around the world. The primary Pierro vineyard produces superb-quality fruit with an emphasis on soil, aspect and a high number of vines per hectare to achieve well balanced fruit.

The winemaking approach is very hands-on, from handpicking through to bunch sorting to berry-level. Wines are made in small batches to ensure each particular vineyard area receives the attention it deserves.

After a Christmas trip to Australia in 2009, Tony and Daphne Spikins became enamoured with the stunning Minot Estate, and purchased 8 of its 10 acres to begin their collective winemaking venture. With regionally acclaimed winemaker Bernie Stanlake and vineyard manager Ken Miles at the helm, Wrenoir (Pip's Vineyard's label) wines are produced from estate-grown fruits of excellent pedigree and provenance. 

An ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon and zesty Semillon Sauvignon Blanc are produced by the estate under its Wrenoir label. Wines can be purchased online.
