Description

Winner of James Halliday’s Dark Horse Winery of the Year 2017, Arlewood is a family-owned, boutique producer making elegant wines the Gosatti family and friends love to drink.

Arlewood's winemaking is inspired by the village of La Bratta in Northern Italy where hands-on owner Gary Gossatti’s ancestors were grape growers for the local community winery. The label began back in 1984 and in 2009 relocated to the cooler Forest Grove property, located 10km south of Margaret.

The Wines
Margaret River’s signature varieties are made with creative and intuitive winemaking techniques. Look out for the European inspired La Bratta Bianco and La Bratta Rosso. The Bianco has been a major hit with the critics, with James Halliday naming it a ‘Wow Factor White’ and saying it was, “a wine that brought goose-bumps due to my unabashed love of fine white Bordeaux… This is a tour de force of winemaking, underlain by a profound love and understanding of the fruit and its origins.”

Wine Tasting
Laid back, tastings of all the wines are available from 11am Thursday to Sunday. Private tastings can also be arranged.

Description

A long-time quiet achiever in Margaret River, the highly-awarded Ashbrook Estate began in 1979 and has been owned by three generations of the Devitt family. Located in the heart of Wilyabrup, it remains a boutique operation with a strong focus on handmade, single-vineyard premium wines. All fruit is grown, made, bottled and packaged at within the estate for ultimate quality control.

The Wines

The focused range reflects Margaret River’s regional heroes; Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, along with a Riesling and a Verdelho. The estate began entering wine shows in 1999 and that year won the SGIO Winemakers Awards. A string of accolades and critical acclaim has followed.

Description

This delightful winery is located in the heart of Margaret River. Owners Noni and Bill Ilic are hands-on in all aspects of the business, from planting and tending the vines, winemaking and hand-selling their wines from the cellar door. Making premium wines is their passion, which happens to also be their business.

The Wines
The Beckett’s Flat vineyard was first planted in 1992. The vineyard is managed primarily with organic practices and the wines are all made on site in the pair’s small, but well-equipped winery.

Early success in Australian and overseas wine shows led the Ilic’s to focus their wines style toward making delicious, food-friendly, early drinking wines that are fruit-driven and elegant. The stunning range includes diverse styles from traditional method Sparkling White and Rosé to dry, crisp and fruity whites, elegant reds and even a White Port. Their Five Stones label is recognised for producing Australia’s finest Kosher and vegan-friendly wines.

Wine Tasting
The boutique Cellar Door is located just off Bussell Highway and open daily most days. Be sure to greet the doorman ‘Raff’, a Sable German Shephard. He especially loves visitors that throw a stick for him. Wines are very reasonably priced with generous case specials too. Cellar door open 10am to 5pm

Unique Highlights
Owner / Winemaker Bill’s other passion is photography and he has studied under renowned US photographers Fred Picker (Zone VI) and George de Wolfe. The cellar door doubles as a gallery showcasing Bill’s stunning images of the region in all its natural glory. A selection of old cameras and photographic equipment are exhibited too.

Since 1984, Brookland Valley has been one of Margaret River’s most awarded wineries, reaching new levels of success when it was named ‘Winery of the Year’ by James Halliday’s Wine Companion in 2009.

Situated in a picturesque valley beside Wilyabrup Brook, Brookland Valley’s idyllic site is less than 2km from the Indian ocean and features a north-east facing, wind shielded microclimate which is planted to close-set, spur-pruned vines.

The Wines
Brookland Valley’s benchmark wine range focuses on classic grape varieties sourced entirely from Margaret River. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the focus, made in a minimal intervention winemaking style, making the terroir the focus throughout the portfolio of Reserve, Estate, Verse 1 and Small Batch labels.

Wine Tastings
With breathtaking views of the Wilyabrup Brook, the cellar door offers the full range of Brookland Valley wines for tasting and sale. It is also home to a fine gallery of wine and food related gifts and accessories, including a selection of fine glassware. 

The Food
Set in the natural surrounds of Brookland Valley Vineyard, Flutes Restaurant has earnt a reputation as one of the region's favourite premium, yet relaxed dining experiences. Executive Chef Francois Morvan brings an exotic mix of his French training plus a reverence for local seasonal produce to create an ever-changing menu.

Description

Located in Rosa Brook, 12 minutes south of Margaret River town and nearby a collective of quaint, rustic cellar doors. The town is known for its down to earth spirit, which is reflected at Brown Hill Estate. The winery was established in 1995 by the Bailey Family who lived in the West Australian Goldfields for four generations before relocating to Margaret River. The name Brown Hill Estate draws from this family history.

The winery has twice been named Small Producer of the Year by The West Australian Wine Guide (2009, 2010). Among the wines’ many accolades, the 2014 Perseverance Cabernet Merlot picked up an international award for ‘Best in Show’ at the 2018 Decanter Wine Awards, one of only 50 awards given out globally.

The Wines
The vineyard’s gravelly produce small, intensely flavoured grapes which are nurtured into wines through traditional, boutique methods. All the fruit is grown on the estate’s vineyard, hand-picked and hand-sorted, with the finest level of attention to detail. The range focuses on Margaret River’s signature varieties.

Wine Tasting
Located inside the winery, the authentic cellar door experiences also allow visitors the unique opportunity to observe the wines being made. A huge jarrah slab resting upon oak barrels adds to the rustic charm. Open 10am to 5pm daily.

Tours hosted by a winemaker operate daily at 2.30pm and provide an insider’s look into the winemaking process, including the rare opportunity to taste barrel samples and understand the attention to detail that goes into Brown Hill Estate’s winemaking.

Description

One of Margaret River’s founding five estates, Cape Mentelle was established in 1970 by regional pioneer David Hohnen and his brothers Mark and Giles. In 1983 Cape Mentelle won Australia’s most coveted wine award, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Award for its Cabernet Sauvignon and cemented its position as a premium producer when it won it again the following year. This was huge, not just for Cape Mentell, but also for the youthful Margaret River wine region.

Today Cape Mentelle forms part of the LVMH group (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) and its wines remain some of the region’s most critically acclaimed. James Halliday says they are, “knocking on the door of the Winery of the Year Award.” Environmental sustainability is a key driver within the vineyards and winery and Cape Mentelle was WA’s first member into Australian wine sustainability program, Entwined. To achieve this certification the vineyard utilises the most natural viticulture techniques.

The Wines
The critically-acclaimed wine range is focused around Margaret River’s signature varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (and blends), Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Chardonnay. An historic Zinfandel is made too, from vines planted in 1974 which were brought out directly from California to the Cape Mentelle Vineyard.

Wine Tasting
The cellar door is one of the region’s original to be made with rammed earth. Located just five minutes towards the coast from Margaret River town, guests can enjoy tasting experiences starting from $10. A Behind the Scenes Tour and Behind the Scenes Tour with Food and Wine Pairing Experience run on weekdays, offering the unique opportunity to explore behind the winery walls of one of the region’s most famous estates. Open daily 10am – 5pm.

Unique Highlights
Nostalgia enthusiasts will love the photo collection lining the barrel hall behind the cellar door. It features images remembering the early days of establishing Cape Mentelle and the Margaret River wine region. The whole family can enjoy picnic facilities, dedicated activities areas for children and estate’s petanque courts. Similar to bocce, this game originated in 1907 in Provence, Southern France. The courts are free to use, boules can be borrowed from the cellar door.

Since 1982 Cape Mentelle has hosted the region’s most renowned Cabernet event. The Cape Mentelle International Cabernet Tasting is a blind tasting that features a selection of Cabernets from the world’s finest cabernet producing regions; Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Tuscany and Margaret River. Carpe Diem is the heart-warming winery of Gianfranco and Francesco Anderle, a delightful winemaking family who visited Margaret River in 2000, fell in love with the region and sold up their assets to chase their dreams with a 75 hectare property in Wilyabrup. Hence the name, Carpe Diem!

The Wines
Winemaker Gianfranco trained at the world’s oldest wine school in Europe, Conegliano in Northern Italy. He brings a strong European approach to his winemaking, every aspect of which he does in his custom-built winery, including hand-bottling his wines. Italian varieties are the focus such as pinot grigio, schiaffo, vermentino, nebiolo and decantato. 

Wine Tasting
Known for the beautiful Italian hospitality, Gianfranco and Francesca love meeting their guests and personally providing complimentary tastings of all the wines from their winery-based tasting table. Look out for a few small-batch special release wines are available exclusively at the cellar door from time to time.

Description

Cullen Wines was established by Diana and Kevin Cullen who began experimenting with viticulture in 1966 following various research reports that suggested Margaret River’s climate was similar to that of Bordeaux. Encouraging results led the pair to plant 18 acres of vines on their sheep and cattle farm in 1971 to establish Cullen Wines. Daughter Vanya became chief winemaker in 1989 and has earnt a reputation as one of Australia’s most awarded winemakers.

In 2005, the iconic Diana Madeline Cabernet Merlot was awarded the top Langton’s Classification category of ‘Exceptional’, one of a handful of Australia’s best wines to hold this status. The Kevin John Chardonnay 2007 was awarded the World’s Best Chardonnay at the 2010 Decanter World Wine Awards. Both wines have received a host of international awards, judged against the world’s best wines.

The Wines

The wines are estate-grown from Cullen Wines’ two A Grade Biodynamic (BFA) certified vineyards in Wilyabrup, Margaret River. The philosophy is to search for the best quality expression of the vineyard in the wine. Quality is paramount, and every winemaking step reflects Cullen Wines’ approach to do whatever it takes to make the most outstanding wines. Cabernet Sauvignon (and blends) and Chardonnay are the focus.

Wine Tasting

Cullen Wine’s harmonious stone and timber cellar door is open daily 10.30am to 4pm and offers complimentary tastings of current release wines. A selection of museum vintages can be purchased by the glass from the cellar door’s enomatic wine machine. Enthusiasts will love Cullen Wines tour, which teaches the principles of biodynamics in the vineyards and includes a visit to the historic vines and winery followed by a private wine tasting.

The Food

The award-winning Cullen restaurant overlooks their historic vineyard making a relaxing place for a glass of wine, lunch or a coffee. The menu incorporates only fresh, biodynamic and organic produce sourced from Cullen’s restaurant garden and selected local producers. For an extra treat, try Cullen’s Food & Wine experience, a five-course feast paired with wines.

The Cullen Wines homestead is set in peaceful vineyard surroundings for a rejuvenating getaway that supports the winery’s philosophy of living in harmony with nature. It was built in 1976 and is conveniently located within a short walking distance of the Cullen Wines’ tasting room and restaurant. Set in Wilyabrup, on what was formerly a country retreat, Driftwood Estate received instant acclaim when its first ever wine, the 1993 Semillon, won a special commendation in a UK wine competition.

The boutique winery was established by Tom and Helen Galopoulos in 1989 and makes estate-grown wines with a simplistic approach to winemaking in order to best express the qualities of its ultra-premium grapes. The wines are pure, varietal and regional, leading to Driftwood Estate’s consistent rating as 5 Star Winery James Halliday winery.

The Wines
The wines are produced under four labels, Single Site, Artifacts, The Collection, and Oceania. The focus is Margaret River’s hero varieties in approachable to rare and fine styles.  There’s also a sparkling wine, rosé and a Tawny.

Taking in beautiful views across the undulating vines, the Driftwood Estate Cellar Door offers the opportunity to taste the wine range as well as olive oil made from estate-grown olives. Description

When Danish Royalty get married, they choose Fermoy Cabernet. Prince Mary and Prince Frederick of Denmark did just that, enjoying the fine wine over dinner at their wedding in May 2004.

Fermoy has an enviable reputation around Australia for its wines, which have been grown and made at its Metricup Road property since 1988 (planted in 1985). Fermoy’s Margaret River’s hero varieties have received a tonne of accolades over the years, culminating in the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon being named ‘Best Cabernet in the World’ at the coveted Competitions de Cabernets in Paris, 2015.

Description

A family owned winery established by Rob Glass and Jessica Worrall which connects their professional backgrounds and passion for wine. They began with a small vineyard in Geographe in 2000, expanding when they found their ‘dream vineyard’ in Margaret River two years later. Surrounded by rolling hills, the site’s sandy loam soils are great for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The Wines
Firetail produces premium varietal wines from estate-grown grapes in Margaret River and Geographe. The vines receive the fastidious attention of the vineyard workers throughout the year with the team working hard to at produce the best quality, intense and flavoured grapes. The range includes a sparkling, still red and white wines and a dessert wine.

Wine Tasting

Description

Set on 165 acres, Fishbone Cellar Door and Japanese Restaurant is part of Fishbone Wines farm and planted with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Tempranillo. The vineyard setting is typical to the Margaret River region, north facing with a combination of loam and sandy pea gravel with a well-drained soil structure. The focus is on stripped back, raw quality winemaking, which is what the Fishbone symbol represents.

The modest and contemporary cellar door space – with striking aquarium – is open daily, offering complimentary tastings of over 20 different wines, sourced from WA’s leading wine regions Margaret River, Frankland River and Geographe.

Description

Flinders Bay makes its wines from their vineyard in Karridale, located nearby Flinders bay, where the climate is distinctly cooler. Scientific data suggests it may be Western Australia’s coolest grape growing area. The vineyard is planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The vineyard is run with the sole focus of growing the highest quality grapes and natural farming methods are utilised where possible.

Over 10 different wines are made, including dry to sweet still whites, a rosé, reds and a traditional method NV sparkling. The wines are available through local retailers.

Description

Hamelin Bay Wines was established by the Drake-Brockman family in 1992. The family-run vineyard features a restaurant and cellar door and is built upon a unique family history in the region.

A Serendipitous Tale
Owner Richard Drake-Brockman is the great grandson of regional pioneer Grace Bussell, whose family first settled in the Margaret River region in 1830. Grace is famous for her courage as a 16-year-old when, with aboriginal stockman Sam Isaacs, she rescued the survivors of the ‘Georgette’ shipwreck at Redgate Beach. Her husband, Frederick Brockman is known for his exploration of the Kimberley. He read about Grace’s feat in the newspaper and was so impressed, he rode 300km on horseback to meet her. This romantic tale ended happily when they married in 1882.

In a stroke of serendipity, Hamelin Bay’s vineyard and winery is located at the intersection of the Brockman and Bussell Highways, which were named in honour of these two pioneering families.

The Wines
The unique Five Ashes vineyard is one of Margaret River’s most picturesque vineyards. The moderate maritime climate and a north facing ridge of prime gravely loam soils are ideal for premium quality grape growing.  The white wines exude freshness and elegance, and the red wines have restrained power and depth. Since first vintage in 1996, Hamelin Bay has been awarded more than 10 major wine show trophies and numerous gold, silver and bronze medals.

Wine Tasting
The cellar door sits on a peaceful valley slope overlooking the vines, an idyllic lake and rolling hills surrounded by Marri forest. Follow a magnificent granite entry through to the contemporary tasting space daily, from 10am to 4.45pm for wine tasting.

The Food
The Restaurant is offers sweeping views over the Five Ashes vineyard and the Rushy Creek valley below, with a background of tall Marri and Karri trees. Open for lunch and dinner the menus incorporate fresh, local seasonal ingredients in a laid-back and generous country style. Save room from for the house-made ice-cream sandwiches, which take a local twist on a classic Australian favourite treat.

This ultra-boutique, single-vineyard winery was established in 1995 by George and Mary Heydon. The vineyard, comprising Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot was planted on idyllic land in Wilyabrup in 1988 and is managed primarily with biodynamic, organic and traditional viticulture principles.

The Wines
The boutique winery makes just 2,000 dozen wines each vintage, focused on Margaret River’s hero varieties. The emphasis is on expressing their wine’s single estate origin and employs minimal intervention winemaking techniques. The highly-regarded wine collection is made by long-term Margaret River winemaker Mark Messenger, also known for his work at Juniper Estate, and historically at Cape Mentelle. Among numerous major accolades, Heydon Estate received the Wine of Provenance Award at the Margaret River Wine Show in 2017 for its Cabernet Sauvignon.

Description

The original owners of Higher Plane inspected over 30 sites around Margaret River before settling upon Forest Grove. The vineyard, with its gravelly duplex soils and southern Margaret River cool southerly winds, was first planted in 1997 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Subsequent Chardonnay plantings have ensued. Natural farming principles are followed to ensure optimum soil health and encourage biodiversity in the vineyard.

The Wines

The team firmly believes in the ‘less is more’ approach, seeking delicacy, elegance and complexity in the wines through minimal intervention winemaking. Indigenous yeasts are often used for fermentation and minimal sulphur additions are made for the truest expression of the vineyard site. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the heroes, and an innovative Fiano is being pioneered.

In the absence of a cellar door, the wines are sold through online, and can also be found in independent retail stores and restaurants around Australia.

Description

Originally called Wright’s and planted in 1973 on excellent soils beside the Wilyabrup Brook, the property was renamed Juniper by the late Roger Hill and wife Gillian Anderson in 1998.

The site has a rich history. In the 19th century the road from Busselton to the south of Margaret River ran through what is now the vineyard, hence the wine range called “the Crossing”. The present block was created by a sub division by the Junipers, a well-known Western Australian artist family.

The Wines

The vineyard is unirrigated and the vines hand-pruned and hand-picked at vintage. It was originally planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Semillon and subsequent plantings of Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec in 1999. Winemaker Mark Messenger has a longstanding reputation for the excellent quality and regional typicity of his wines which are made onsite at Juniper Estate’s state of the art facilities.

Wine Tastings

Enjoy a picturesque setting in the serene part of Wilyabrup, with views of rolling hills and the vineyards. Wines by the glass or bottle can also be enjoyed on a peaceful lawn beside the Wilyabrup Brook or in winter, beside the log fire on the winery’s comfy leather couches.

The heritage of Killerby lives with original founder Dr Benjamin Barry Killerby who in 1973 planted one of the first vineyard in WA’s Geographe wine region with cuttings from his friends, Dr Bill Pannell (Moss Wood) and Dr Tom Cullity (Vasse Felix).

In 2008 the wine business was purchased by Ferngrove who continue to make excellent Margaret River wines under the Killerby label from their state-of-the-art winery in Frankland River, which can be tasted from the contemporary Margaret River Cellar Store.

The Wines

Killerby maintains its small winery essence with most of its winemaking techniques and philosophies remaining the same since it was first established. The wine is made using small batch techniques; high quality French oak barrels and meticulous attention to detail. The wines are made from select parcels of fruit from some of the best vineyard sites in Margaret River. 

Wine Tasting

Situated adjacent to the Cheeky Monkey Cidery, Brewery and Restaurant, the cellar door was designed leading interior architects to make wine tasting less intimidating. The cellar door has perhaps Australia’s longest tasting bench with a purpose-built cheese and meat larder. Killerby Cellar Store is open daily from 10am to 5pm for cellar door sales, wine tastings, coffee, food and wine.

Unique Highlights

One of WA’s most awarded winemakers, Larry Cherubino Wines makes an expressive range from a collection of estate-owned vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton and the Great Southern (Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup areas). The label began in Frankland River in 2004 when Larry and wife, Edwina purchased an historic property called Riversdale. The inaugural 2005 vintage wines were made in the family’s spare room! These days they are made in a well-equipped winery in Margaret River.

Larry Cherubino Wines was named James Halliday’s Australian Winery of the Year in 2011, and also Australia’s Best-Value Winery by Halliday in 2017. Winemaker Larry Cherubino has a string of Winemaker of the Year nominations with leading Australian and UK wine media.

The Wines
Following the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard, Larry Cherubino Wines are made from six specialty vineyards in Western Australia’s leading south-west wine regions. The wines are estate-grown and the vineyards follow a mix of principles from the schools of organics and traditional farming with the aim to encourage the vines to exist in a healthy ecosystem, for plant health. The range has a characterful selection of site-driven examples of Riesling and Chardonnay, alongside alternative varieties including Fiano and Pinot Blanc. Classic Cabernet and Shiraz are made too.

Wine Tasting
Enjoy a seasonal range of wines for tasting at all times alongside a selection of cellar door exclusives. An enomatic machine holds a curated range of rare back vintage wines which can be enjoyed as educational (and highly enjoyable) flights. Private tastings in the board room or barrel room can be booked in advance for groups. Antipasti and dinners are available by special arrangement.

Description

The story behind the name of this Margaret River pioneer dates back 100 years. It’s alleged that prior to the vines, the site was a dairy farm, whose ‘prominent red gate’ was known locally as the place to buy (illegal) home-distilled spirits. Incidentally, the property is nearby to Redgate Beach, so founder Bill Ullinger thought the name to be fitting on all fronts!

The vineyard was established in 1977, with 20 acres of vines planted. Over time, the family owned estate has grown into a 55 acre vineyard, operating its own winery, cellar door and maintaining an enviable reputation for its boutique, premium wines.

The Wines
Since the early vintages of the 1980s, Redgate’s handcrafted wines have received countless awards. In addition to its regional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnays, Redgate makes Rose, Sparkling and a series of three luscious dessert wines, including a rare fortified Shiraz named in honour of founder, Bill.

Wines can be tasted at the homestead-like cellar door is open daily from 10am to 4.30pm. It’s a family-friendly place, perfect to bring a picnic and enjoy the panoramic surroundings.

Description

Located on 86 acres of picturesque converted dairy land is this boutique, family winery. Rockfield Estate was established by the Gaman family in 1996 and one of the first wineries to emerge in the picturesque Rosa Glen area. The first vintage was released in 2000.

The property is bounded by regrowth jarrah and marri forest, with the Chapman Creek flowing through it. The site’s gravel alluvial and ancient river loams, and unique microclimate make for vibrant, distinct and elegant regional wines.

The Wines
All wines are carefully handcrafted at the property’s onsite winemaking facility from only estate-grown fruit. Margaret River’s signature varieties and blends are the focus. Look out also for a vintage sparkling Chardonnay and a Rose.

Wine Tastings
The quaint cellar door offers wine tastings daily from 11am – 5pm.
