Description

Mary and Mike Dilworth established Abbey Creek in 1990 and the original pinot noir and riesling vines were planted in the same year. The cabernet vines were planted in 1993 and now grafted to pinot noir, and the sauvignon blanc vines were planted much later in 2006. Mike remains in the role of viticulturist and Rob Diletti makes the wines.

The name ‘Abbey Creek’ is a combination of two geological markers at the estate: the creek that runs (in winter) alongside the vineyard; and the view of The Abbey in the Stirling Range, WA’s highest collection of peaks. The vineyards are nestled on the northern slope of the Porongurup range, providing a dramatic backdrop when looking over the vineyard towards the main house.

The Wines
The Porongurup sub-region in the Great Southern is known for producing long-lived rieslings with distinct floral characteristics, and pinots that show bright cherry, pomegranate and red berry characteristics. The wines have been time and again selected for medals and trophies at both regional and national wine shows within Australia, claiming a total of 9 wine show trophies.   

Wine Tasting
Visitors can enjoy the wines on tasting at the cellar door (open 7 days 10-5 ‘when the flag is flying and the sign is out’), an old shearing shed with views over the vineyards and the Kalgan plain. 

Unique Highlights
The view of the Porongurup Range, and the proximity to it.  The wine range is magnificent and concise, the views are picturesque.

Description

Located between the Great Southern region’s Stirling and Porongurup Ranges, Arcadia Wines winery was established by John and Gaye Robinson in 1998, who visited Kendenup from Perth one weekend while looking for a getaway property. This single vineyard was first planted in 1997 on fertile slopes that dip into the picturesque creek known locally as 'Dead Man's Creek'.

The beautiful views of the Stirling Range inspired the name 'Arcadia', used in Roman and Greek poetry as a place where people were believed to enjoy the perfect life.

Great Southern regional heroes Riesling and Shiraz are the focus along with beautiful, cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cellar Door

Make the most of Arcadia Wines’ spectacular views of the Stirling Ranges with a wine tasting, platter or woodfired pizza at the cosy cellar door and cafe, open Friday to Sunday 10am - 5pm. A range of events take place throughout the year too including live music, dining opportunities and more.

 

Ducketts Mill

Wine from Ducketts Mill and more than 40 varieties of Denmark Farmhouse Cheese, all produced by Ross and Dallas Lewis, can be tasted at the homely cellar door in picturesque Scotsdale Valley.

Description

The land on which the Ducketts Mill winery is located started out with a small 5 acre planting of riesling, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Additional plantings have increased the total vineyard area to 18 acres. 

Combining their love for cheese and wine, Ross and Dallas Lewis run a homely cellar door nestled in the lush Scotsdale Valley.  Set in an old timber farmstead and overlooking the vineyard, visitors can settle back and enjoy cheese platters matched to the cool-climate wines from the estate in Denmark. 

There are more than 40 varieties of cheese made under the Denmark Farmhouse Cheese brand and everything is made from locally sourced dairy produce. Left over milk is used to make ice-cream and fudge.

The Wines
Winemaker James Kellie is responsible for the concise collection of wines at Duckett’s Mill.  Sauvignon blanc, riesling, semillon, chardonnay, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and franc are all grown on the estate vineyards.  There is also a small collection of fortified wines, which are well-matched to the generous cheese and meat platters.

Wine Tasting
All wines and cheeses are available for tasting at the cellar door on Scotsdale Road from Monday to Sunday, 10-5.

Unique Highlights
Cheese, jam, chutney, fudge, premium home-made ice-cream and wines are all made at Duckett’s Mill and are available for purchase at the cellar door.

Monkey Rock Winery

Description

The first grapevines within the property’s 1 hectare vineyard were planted in 2000 by Swiss owners Regula and Hermann Fehr. In 2019 their daughter Stephanie and her Husband Kai have taken over the family business and introduced Cider made with no added preservatives

The estate’s cellar door is open Thursday to Tuesday 11am to 4pm or by appointment.

The Wines
Monkey Rock produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Shiraz varieties.

The Ciders

No added preservative ciders - including apple, pineapple and passionfruit

Unique Highlights
Nearly all the wines are not aged in oak - they are fruit driven and not filtered or fined. Traditional Italian liqueurs such as Limoncello and Nocino are also produced, alongside delectable olive oils made fresh from olive trees grown on the property.

Description

Established in 1997 by David Britten and Melissa Boughey who relocated from Perth to bring their kids up with an idyllic country lifestyle. The property borders the pristine Kent River between Denmark and Walpole with low-yielding vines planted on a gentle north-facing slope with gravelly soils. The hands-on couple are meticulous in their selection of high-quality fruit, minimal intervention winemaking and precise oak handling.

Chardonnay, a Bordeaux style Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Malbec blend and a Shiraz are made.

Cellar Door

The estate offers complimentary wine tasting at its modern and relaxed cellar door, which also showcases a selection of artworks by resident artist (and co-owner) Melissa Boughey, inspired by the many diverse colours and forms of the Denmark region. Unique sculptural woodwork by Tony Docherty is also on show and the winery also hosts Art Trail exhibitions throughout the year. Open 7 days from 11am - 5pm.

Description

Parish Lane was established by Richard and Julie Parish in 1994 and is located in Albany, an environment ideal for cool-climate, sustainable viticulture. The pair produce wines in small quantities, allowing a hands-on approach from the picking to bottling stages. The fruit is picked each vintage by the couple and their mates, fermented then aged in oak barrels for 12 months of longer, reflecting Richard and Julie’s philosophy of integrity and focus in the production of great tasting wines.

Varieties include Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Merlot and Sparkling Blanc de Blancs.

Taste Parish Lane wines at the Albany Boatshed Markets on Sundays 10am - 1pm, or check their Facebook page for upcoming wine tastings across Western Australia. The winery is open by appointment only.

 

Poacher's Ridge

Description

Alex and Janet Taylor purchased the Poacher's Ridge property in 1999. The couple hand-tend the estate's twenty acres under vine to grow cool climate wines that truly reflect the seasons and the land's character.  The vineyard is located at the back of Narrikup, receiving a strong influence from the Southern Ocean and the wines are known for their elegance and medium bodied style.

The Wine

Poacher's Ridge makes a range of wines, with a focus on Riesling, Marsanne, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cellar Door

Bask in the panoramic beauty of the Porongurups, vineyards and olive groves at the estate's rustic, stone and timber cellar door. The complete range of wines, including a selection of exclusive museum wines, are available for tasting throughout the year alongside platters of locally sourced cheeses and meats. Tours and group bookings can be arranged in advance. Open Friday to Sunday, 10am – 4pm.

The cellar door is homely and sweet, offering wine tastings or wines by the glass or bottle to be enjoyed within the  stunning grounds.

The Food

There’s also a cosy cafe overlooking beautiful established gardens, vines and the rolling hills of Mount Barker. The menu features gluten free gourmet lunches, sweet treats and delicious coffees alongside tipples of premium Windrush wines on the deck, gazebo or spacious grass areas. Open Friday to Sunday and Monday public holidays from 10am - 4pm.
