Description

Born in 1956 in Perth, Western Australia, to Hungarian parents, Kati studied art at Edith Cowan University and the Hobart School of Art, majoring in printmaking. Since 1980 she has lived mainly on the far south coast of WA, working from her home studio. The telling of tales has always been integral to her art practice, and she draws on personal stories and incidents along with grander narratives to devise a form of visual fable. Using a cast of characters including animals and objects, her storylines describe the mystery, frailty, hopefulness and anxiety of life. She says, 'I often think of my images as small theatre settings where various dramas are enacted'. Kati's art is often imbued with her Eastern European heritage, and a journey to trace her migrant family's homelands in 2010 is reflected in subsequent exhibitions, and in the development of a series of works.

More recently, Kati has been exploring the natural world, looking at ways to depict the fragility and complexity of natural ecosystems.

Kati's work has been exhibited nationally in both solo and group exhibitions, and is held in numerous private and public art collections in both Australia and overseas.

Description

Holly Story is a visual artist based in Fremantle, Western Australia. She also maintains a research studio on the south coast of WA on the Deep River. Over the past two decades her art practice has included printmaking, embroidery, installation, video and sculpture. She has an abiding interest in the relationship between the human and natural worlds.

Holly was born in Zimbabwe but grew up in various countries with a “third culture” family based in England. She immigrated to Western Australia in 1970, and in 1987, as a mature age student, undertook a Visual Art degree at Curtin University School of Art, Perth. She obtained a BA followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Visual Art 1991 and has been working as an artist, arts administrator and occasional writer on the arts since that time.

Her work is concerned with human perception, with lived experience, and in particular the interdependence of the human and natural world. At the heart of her practice is a 30 year relationship with her research site on the Deep River, on the south coast of Western Australia.

Over the past two decades her art practice has included printmaking, embroidery, installation and sculpture. Most recently she has begun working with video. She states “I take worn materials and objects, already redolent with their own histories, and transform them through simple domestic processes.”

Description

Four sisters from the talented Numina family of artists have painted aspects of their ancestral country and their cultural ties to the land.

Four main stories emerge from the paintings. Bush Seeds – My Country relates to the harvesting of seeds used for making flour and damper, a staple food of traditional life. Seeds were valued and spread around watering places to encourage bountiful growth of native plants.

Bush Medicine Leaves refers to the plants harvested for traditional medicine practices, often to boil the leaves in water over the fire.

Water Dreaming relates to the critical knowledge of waterholes, including the Creation stories tied to those places and the way the water sites are linked together by the stories.

Dingo Dreaming and Emu Dreaming are the final two of the five stories, related to Creation stories and the role of native fauna in the traditions of Anmatyerre people.
