Description

The heritage-listed building, first established in 1850 by Captain Daniel Scott, is overflowing with features preserved from the original site including a glass shielded floor and wall display of the original cellar door limestone.


Australia’s first craft brewery and Fremantle’s own Matilda Bay Brewery has partnered with Ball & Chain to bring the iconic institution back to its roots coincidentally on its 30 year anniversary. Offering the widest range of Matilda Bay craft beer and ciders on tap than any other pub in Western Australia, craft beer lovers will be spoilt for choice.


Whisky enthusiasts are welcome to the Ball & Chain’s own Bourbon Room featuring floor to ceiling shelves loaded with the best range of whiskey brands from around the world. Plus the Ball & Chain features a Pub Grub Menu hand selected to accompany your favourite craft beer of whisky. The selection includes beef sliders, prawn skewers, pulled pork, and jalapeno poppers to name but a few.


Ball & Chain General Manager David Bornmann has spent countless hours researching the historic site and is pleased to finally be able to present the pub to the public.


“Our history dates back to 1850 when Captain Daniel Scott decided to build a warehouse and to dig a well on the site,” Mr Bornmann said.


“With a well and warehouse he could act as a ship’s victualler but the waterfront warehouse was invaluable when the first 75 convicts arrived in Fremantle on the 1st June 1850. The convicts that arrived on the Scindian used Scott’s warehouse as their own home until Captain Henderson and the convicts had constructed their own convict establishment – hence the name Ball & Chain.”


“In 1896 the building was first used as a Hotel, later becoming a well-known corner pub named ‘Hubbles’ after its owner. It was also a meeting place for the working class of Fremantle as boxing tournaments were held out the back whilst workers picked up on the veranda who sat on the timber benches still outside today.”


“In recent times the pub went incognito as it was closed for business and instead used as office space.”


“Now we have ripped out the desks, stripped back the wallpaper, knocked out the temporary walls and brought back to life one of Fremantle’s most iconic pubs.”


Brought back to life by Primewest as part of their redevelopment of The Esplanade Hotel, the venue is now managed by Rydges. Primewest Directors John Bond, David Schwartz and Jim Litis Lodge purchased the Esplanade Hotel in 2013 to include in their expanding property portfolio with the most recent upgrade of the Ball & Chain pub completing the million dollar plus redevelopment of the property.

Bathers Beach House is Perth's only absolute beachfront restaurant, bar and function space, three steps from the beautiful white sands of Bathers Beach in Fremantle.

Bathers Beach House is a spectacular two level venue and occupies approximately one third of the fully renovated Fremantle Fisherman’s co-operative building.  The ground level houses a dining space and bar areas. We have a quintessentially Australian flavour to the menu, a wide range of local craft beers plus international favourites together with an eclectic range of local wines and a few international additions. The first floor has an amazing panoramic view along the coast and is a flexible functions space that can be used for almost any occasion. Downstairs caters for 270 people, whilst upstairs could cater for as many as 330 people.

The northern side of Bathers Beach House features alfresco dining areas plus to service the increased usage of the entire precinct we are also offering a kiosk service from the northern side of the building.

In an old Fremantle warehouse space, stripped back to its original brick, sits our Kitchen & Bakery. An open kitchen sits alongside diners and can also be viewed from a cozy mezzanine leveled lounge.

Bread in Common is about communal dining, communal tables, sharing food, drinks, wine… with a focus down on the table.

Our kitchen food philosophy is about locally sourced, seasonal produce and house made. Constructed to be about sharing, enjoying time in common.

Our bar and wine wall is about the small, rare and unusual as much as the loved and simple.

The bakery bakes our traditional rustic breads, featured in our menus, and available to take-home and also offers take-out sandwiches and coffee.

Executive Chef, Scott Brannigan and Head Chef, Chris Eales direct the kitchen, with their emphasis being on a seasonal farm to table menu.

Whilst our menu is designed to be shared and enjoyed with our bread, we provide both gluten free and vegan dishes on the menu all year round.

Growing up in a large Mauritian family, my childhood was fortunately filled with delicious food experiences. Not only was I born with an enormous appetite, but food was central to so many things in my life. A visit to my Grandmere’s (Grandmother) was never without a home cooked meal and special occasions were often planned around dining together as a family at our local Dim Sum house.

It wasn’t until school holidays in year 4 when my Grandmere taught me how to prepare dumplings (wontons) from scratch that I discovered the staggering yumminess of authentic Mauritian and Asian cooking, and despite having tried hundreds and possibly thousands of dumplings across my life, Grandmere’s pork wontons to this day will always be my favourite.
Please note that although Bumplings is the result of my ongoing obsession with dumplings as well as many years of experiments and tasty discoveries in the kitchen, it is also the result of learning from my Grandmere that making delicious food is all the more sweeter when shared with those around you.

Chic Pea Vegan Cafe opened its doors first in January 2017. Myself (Mica) grew up in Germany in a Restaurant that has been in our family for four generations (my sister just took over as the 5th). My Papa is a Chef, and I learned from a young age what tastes good. Cicerello’s has been an iconic Fremantle destination since it’s founding in 1903.

Whilst we have grown and evolved over the years, we are still famous for our traditional fish & chips.  Today, on any visit you can also enjoy a selection fried or grilled products including hand cut onsite fresh local fish of the day, local lobster, crabs, prawns and even abalone.
