Description

Set in the beautiful Forest Grove just south of Margaret River is this tiny grape-grower and winemaker. Flowstone is the creation of local winemaker of 30+ years of experience, Stuart Pimms and wine fanatic businessman, Phil Giglia.

Their vineyard is located 6km inland from the Indian Ocean, where the Margaret River Plateau joins the Leeuwin Naturaliste coastal strip. Their approach is hands-on throughout the journey from grape to glass. Retaining their boutique size allows for an intimate understanding of the vines, the land and the production.

Critic James Halliday said of Flowstone early on, “every now and then a new producer will pop up with wines that are really good, and ultimately vie for inclusion in the list of ten of the best new wineries in the next Companion... this is one new winery that will quite certainly be in the top 10, for its ranks among the best I can remember."

The Wines
With an aim to be interesting and enjoyable, Flowstone creates both regional classics and some surprise styles like a rich and Gewurztraminer and Cabernet Sauvignon Touriga (a Portuguese twist in Margaret River’s famed red). Curious wine enthusiasts will love discovering these exciting interpretations that reflect wine styles the owners love to drink.

Description

One of Margaret River’s earlier established vineyards began in 1979 with planting throughout the early 1980s and has since reaped the benefits of serious long-term viticulture investment. Before wine, the property’s life was as a “Gelignite Block” which stored explosives used to clear the nearby forest for farmland settlements of World War I soldiers.

The Wines
The surrounding Boranup Forest is not just picturesque but also protects the vineyard from the ocean winds and storms. Karri loam soils and access to a natural water supply from the McCleod creek, which runs through the property, supports long, gentle, even ripening of the fruit. The range focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Description

The key vineyard is Jindawarra Vineyard, which is located south of Karridale and currently has 34.6 hectares of vineyard planted. With north facing slopes and soils of gravelly loams it is the ideal site for premium and super premium winegrapes. Planted in the year 2000 the vines are mature, balanced and of moderate vigour. The vineyard is only 6 kilometres from the Southern Ocean and 4 kilometres from the Indian Ocean and avoids extreme temperatures as a result of the cooling sea breezes.

Premium cabernet sauvignon is sourced from our Willyabrup managed vineyard. Plantings on our Jindawarra vineyard are: 11.3 ha’s shiraz, 8 ha’s gingin clone chardonnay, 6.3 ha’s sauvignon blanc, 3 ha’s pinot noir droopy clone, 2.1 ha’s viognier and 3.9ha’s Pinot Gris.

Glen’s plan includes a hands on approach to vineyard management through to final production, to produce outstanding value for money wines. Winemaker – Andrew Vesey.
