Description

George Orwell’s intensely powerful novel – live on stage in a critically-acclaimed production by shake & stir. Proudly supported by Lotterywest.

Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries returns in a multi-award winning, critically-acclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairy tale allegorizes and satirizes communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield.

Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and all the animals, fueled by enthusiastic camaraderie and guided by a set of self-imposed rules, are promised a better life free from the self-serving greed of humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the animals once again.

Created by shake & stir and directed by Michael Futcher, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events of 2020.

Adaptor: Nick Skubij | Director: Michael Futcher | Designer: Josh McIntosh | Sound Designer: Guy Webster | Lighting Designer: Jason Glenwright

Description

Esperance Civic Centre presents A Monkey Baa Theatre Company production EDWARD THE EMU Based on the picture books by Sheena Knowles and Rod Clement. Proudly supported by Lotterywest.

Edward is bored with his lot. Being the only emu at the zoo has left him feeling glum and under the impression that the grass is greener in everyone else’s enclosure. Maybe being a seal, or a lion, or a snake might be a better option in life for a lonely bird? Convinced that the other creatures are more popular, Edward breaks ranks and goes to find the fun.

Meanwhile the Keepers are in hot pursuit, hunting high and low to relocate their crowd-pleasing, much-loved feathered attraction. Edward stays one step ahead until he’s ready to head home; concluding that being an emu might be just right after all. Back at HIS pen, a very shocking but welcome surprise awaits... he’s been replaced by the rather wonderful Edwina the Emu!

Lonely no more, the pair are soon the expectant parents of 10 eggs. With the impending arrival of their large family, Edwina is driven to find the right job to support her brood. Whilst Edward assumes nesting duties, she throws her hat in the job-market ring and heads out into the world. Trying all sorts of roles on for size, from dancer to waiter, she discovers she’s not the right fit for any of the human jobs!
The award-winning Monkey Baa team brings to the stage the classic Australian tale of two emus searching for their identity. The emus’ journey of hilarity and tenderness leads them to discover that the best thing you can be is …. you!

Monkey Baa Theatre Company has been creating classic, much-loved productions for young people for over 20 years. Edward the Emu carries on the vision to make theatre an intrinsic part of young people’s lives with the quality, humour and heart that has made Monkey Baa a favourite of families across Australia.

Description

Esperance Civic Centre presents a The Actors' Hub Studios Inc. production of ONE PUNCH WONDER by Amanda Crews.

"Educate and bring up boys to be men of respect, men that protect and look after not only their families but others. Men that don’t tolerate acts of violence against women and the vulnerable in our communities. Men that will never consider or accept acts of extreme cowardice like this as acceptable."

How much damage does one punch really do? "One Punch Wonder" pulls up the page and puts the culture of toxic masculinity under a microscope, looking into the cowards punch from all angles. it asks us: How are we raising our boys?

To the surprise of many audience members, "One Punch Wonder" is a "Dare I say...entertaining" show. Incredibly physical, this piece of theatre goes beyond the traditional forms of verbatim, moving from intimate moments to scenes of high intensity, adrenaline filled acrobatics. Highlighting the dissonance between our values and our actions.

The perfect team to communicate this message to young Australians. A play performed by men, about men, for men.

REVEIWS

Redefining what it means to be a Man. – OUTinPerth ????½

Take your brother, dad, or cousin’s best friend to see this and start the conversation about what manhood should mean in 2018. – Isolated Nation

This is a dynamic and fearsome show that leaves audiences shocked and aware. Reinforcing the need to change the way men behave and think about themselves. - Stage Whispers Sydney

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

“One Punch Wonder” is a hugely compelling and powerful exploration of that toxic mix of unhealthy masculinity, alcohol abuse, violence and all the unhealthy ways we teach men to be males in this culture. It’s very powerful and I recommend everyone to see it. I think every boy in Australia needs to see this play as a matter of urgency. – Melinda Tankard Reist

Description

The Sapphires written & directed by Tony Briggs, is presented by the Esperance Civic Centre and proudly supported by Lotterywest.

The Sapphires is one of the Australia’s best-loved stories. Winning multiple awards as a play, film and soundtrack album there was one challenge left and that was to undertake a national tour of Australia. Bringing the raw energy, fun and emotion of this story directly to stages like the Esperance Civic Centre and across the nation.

Writer Tony Briggs will direct his work in a version he promises will be the most intimate telling of The Sapphires story yet.

“I hope the audience will feel a fresh sense of connection to a story that has already successfully infiltrated the psyche of the Australian theatre and movie going public and get a sense of joy and understanding of who Aboriginal people are and walk away from ‘The Sapphires’ with a smile on their faces." Tony Briggs

Four young Aboriginal women from regional Australia, who like singing country music, suddenly get the chance to change their tune and their lives. Wearing uniforms of sequins, armed only with microphones they find themselves trying to spread joy in the hell that is the Vietnam War.

The Sapphires is a funny, heart-warming tale inspired by the true story of writer Tony Briggs’ mother. It tells of the incredible journey of a singing group of four Yorta Yorta Women, who sing classic soul hits against the backdrop of personal change and massive social upheaval. It is an energetic, fun and engaging play that affirms life and the realisation of dreams.

REVIEWS

“A gem of a play. Briggs mixes fact and fiction to lay bare and flesh out his celebratory tale which, though political in patches, is focused on the personal. The Sapphires is heartfelt and joyous. Superb.”
Bryce Hallett, Sydney Morning Herald

“The Sapphires is a play about fulfilling dreams and challenging stereotypes. It is a play about hope.”
Kate Herbert, The Herald Sun

“The Sapphires is as close as anything I've seen to a sure-fire hit. This is great popular theatre, which is confident enough to take no prisoners.“
Alison Crogan, Theatre Notes

“Energetic, passionate, heart wrenching, uplifting, hilarious and engaging.”
Anna Locke, Australian Stage

In this moment millions of interactions are taking place. We are chatting, texting, debating, liking, sharing, creating and selling more of ourselves than ever before. Never before in human history have we been able to overcome distance and remain so close.

The 1s, the 0s, and Everything in Between invites you into a vortex of digital construction and communication. Written by award-winning WA playwright Chris Isaacs, this new play explores how the rapidly changing ways of our world intensifies our human need for connection.

This successful new work, originally performed in 2018 at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, will return for a WA tour after a co-production with the Australian Theatre for Young People in Sydney at Griffin Theatre in June 2020.

Reviews

“Everything about this production was brilliant – from the poignant, funny and shockingly relatable script and clever set, to the innovative staging and flawless performances.”

“The ensemble worked with Isaacs (an award-winning WA playwright), giving their thoughts and opinions on communication and how technology affects the way we connect with each other. This helps to explain why their performances appeared so natural and authentic; it was a case of their youth being an asset rather than a hurdle. I sincerely hope it can be restaged to a new and bigger audience.”
