Description

In 2004 Sam Castelli purchased land and a partially finished winery building on what is now the Castelli Estate, with the intention of using it as a family holiday home.  After finishing the winery building, Sam decided to continue what the previous owners had started and turned it into an operating winery after all. So began a bright and star-studded journey. 

Sam Castelli didn’t stop the construction at a winery. The estate now boasts a cellar door which is open Wednesday to Monday, 11am to 4 pm, and an authentic Italian restaurant which is open Wednesday to Monday 12 pm to 3:30 pm for lunch and  Fridays and Saturdays 6pm to 9:30pm for dinner.  And also the newly renovated accomodation just next to the restaurant, with five Deluxe king size en-suites and expansive views over Mt Lindsay, the vineyards, and the green rolling hills and Karri trees so typical of the Denmark countryside.

The Wines
The wines are made by local winemaker Mike Garland and are consistently awarded high scores from national wine press, and enjoy medals and trophies at wine shows around Australia.

Five ranges of wine are sourced exclusively from the Home Block vineyard in Denmark, and vineyards in Mt Barker, Pemberton, The Porongurups and Frankland River.

Wines available to try and purchase include riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet, grenache, a sparkling and a dessert wine.  The winery also makes a selection of alternate varietal wines, including an orange chardonnay and an iced viognier.

Monkey Rock Winery

A quaint, family owned and operated winery producing Italian-style handmade wines, liqueurs, cider and olive oil with no added preservatives or additives in the heart of Denmark.

Description

The first grapevines within the property’s 2 hectare vineyard were planted in 2003 by Swiss owners Regula and Hermann Fehr. In 2019 their daughter Stephanie and her Husband Kai have taken over te family business and introduced Cider made with no added preservatives

The estate’s cellar door is open on Thursday to Tuesday 11am to 4pm or by appointment.

The Wines
Monkey Rock produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Shiraz varieties.

The Ciders

No added preservative ciders - including apple, pineapple and passionfruit

Unique Highlights
Traditional Italian liqueurs such as Limoncello and Nocino are also produced, alongside delectable olive oils made fresh from olive trees grown on the property.

Description

Purchased by Russell and Linda Hubbard in 2000, the property is situated on north-facing slopes of the Bennett Ranges; an area highly suited to cool-climate viticulture. The vineyard takes the best of organic and conventional farming principles to grow stunning, varietal fruit. John Wade, who James Halliday names as “arguably the most experienced winemaker in Western Australia” contract-makes the wines at the small onsite winery.

Cellar Door

The Rickety Gate cellar door provides a knowledgeable wine tasting experience, often hosted by owners Russell and Linda. Open Saturdays and Sundays 11:00am - 4:30pm.

Description

A treasure of the Great Southern, Singlefile is the fruit of labour of the Snowden family, who purchased an established vineyard in Scotsdale Valley in 2008 after an extensive search around Australia; determining that Denmark ticked all the boxes for the quality wines and lifestyle they were seeking.

The team decided to focus the existing vineyard entirely on Chardonnay, pulling out Shiraz and Merlot vines and planting Gingin clone Chardonnay. Fruit for the balance of their wines is sourced from specialist vineyard sites throughout the Great Southern Region and its distinct areas including Mount Barker, Albany, Frankland River.

The cool climate wines are handpicked and made as naturally as possible to allow the fruit to be the star of the finished wine. Their Chardonnay was named Chardonnay of the Year by James Halliday (2019 Wine Companion).

The Wines

Four tiers of wines are made, all of which are drawn from specially selected sites within the Great Southern, except for the estate-grown Chardonnay. Riesling, Cabernet blends, Pinot Noir and Fume Blanc are just some of the wine styles being made.

Wine Tasting

Set beside a stunning lake with beautiful manicured lawns, the wood and brick cellar door is tasteful and chic and a three-time recipient of Gourmet Traveller Wine’s ‘Best Cellar Door of the Great Southern’ award. Guests are welcome every day of the week to taste the wines and go on a journey of discovering the different styles of wines from the diverse Great Southern region. Bring your own picnics are welcome and there’s also an option to enjoy ‘Coco d’Vino’ which is a wine and chocolate tasting flight. No bookings required.

Description

The Lake House follows a philosophy of slowing down, taking time out and enjoying laid back time with family and friends, good food and wine. This concept led the development of their wine range, cellar door, restaurant and range of gourmet condiments and grape-based body lotions.

It was established in 2006 by Garry Capelli and Leanne Rogers who fell in love with Denmark ten years prior, determining it would be the place they brought their country-living dreams to life.

The Wines

Grapes are grown in the estate vineyard at Denmark and specialty sites in Mount Barker and Frankland River. The wines include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, which between them have received an impressive array of medals at Western Australian wine shows.

Cellar Door

Perched beside a picturesque lake and vineyard, the Cellar Door is located just five minutes from Denmark town and offers complimentary tastings of over 20 different wines made by The Lake House team. In addition, a range of chutneys, vinegars, sauces, syrups and chocolates made under the Vinofood label are available for tasting too. Winespa body lotion products can also be sampled.

The Restaurant

Lazy long lunches by the lake are what The Lake House hangs it hat on most. Open daily, the food, created from local produce, ranges from rustic vineyard platters to their famous beef and shiraz pie, curries and more.

Description

Established in 2000 and purchased in 2010 by Bob and Marilyn Fowler, Willoughby Park makes a range of dry grown single vineyard wines. The wines are made from the best hand-picked premium fruit from the estate-owned vineyards (and one vineyard partner in the Porongurups). They are made with natural yeast, first class French oak and open fermenters.

The Willoughby Park, Ironrock, Kalgan River and Jamie & Charli ranges feature varieties of Chardonnay, Cabernet Merlot, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rose, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Merlot.

Cellar Door

Overlooking the picturesque Willoughby Park vineyard and beside its Boston Brewery and Restaurant, Willoughby Park’s charming cellar door provides a relaxed, friendly atmosphere to enjoy a selection of wines for tasting. Open daily from 11am - 5pm.

The Food

Open for lunch and dinner each day, the restaurant serves an original, gastro-pub style menu with small share plates through to meals and woodfired pizzas for the whole family. Head Chef Damian Gates sources the freshest local produce to compliment complements the range of Willoughby wines and Boston brews. Open Sunday to Thursday 10am - 9pm and Friday to Saturday 10am - 10pm.

Description

Located nearby Denmark, Yilgarnia is the geological name for a region of Western Australia formed more than 2 billion years ago. Established in 1997 by Peter and Anthony Buxton, the vineyard has north-facing slopes with stunning views of the Hay River Valley, Wilson Inlet and the hills surrounding Denmark. The influence of the Southern Ocean's climate on the vineyard is significant and enables the production of colourful, aromatic, cool-climate wines.

The Wines

Yilgarnia is highly recognised for its Sauvignon Blanc, which James Halliday suggested is the signature wine and one of the best of its kind in Australia. The hand-crafted, estate-grown range also includes three sparkling wines and a selection of Cabernet blends, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon wines are also made.

Cellar Door

Reopening in 2019 is the cellar door, which offers tastings with some of the region’s most spectacular views across the vineyard, lush farmlands and wildflowers.
