UDIA WA: Delivering the Missing Middle

Delivering the Missing Middle- Perth's Medium Density Debate

  • Dates:Oct 17
  • Time(s):12pm-2.30pm
  • Venue:Astral Ballroom, Crown Perth

Details

  • Type:Talks

Description

Building upon the Perth and Peel @3.5m Sub-regional Frameworks 47% infill development target, the State Government recently released its ‘Our Priorities’ document, setting out a number of policy objectives. Included amongst these, the Government has set a target of increasing the number of homes in Perth in close proximity to public transport to 45% by 2031.

Whilst the Government’s policy framework and development industry response to delivering apartments and higher density development is well established, the policy framework governing medium density housing needs to be strengthened to support the delivery of the ‘missing middle,’ particularly if the Governments new development objectives are to be met. Despite these challenges, a number of ‘missing middle’ projects within Metropolitan Perth’s central sub-region have recently emerged.

Ray Haeren, Regional Director- Urbis will present the findings of Urbis’ research examining the emerging trends in medium density housing and how the industry has been able to respond to market demand for this type of housing.

Then you will hear case studies from developers set to deliver major medium density projects in the year(s) ahead. Featuring;

  • Andrew Wallis, Senior Development Manager- Stockland
  • Nathan Blackburne, Managing Director- Cedar Woods

Following, we will conduct a panel discussion facilitated by UDIA National President, Darren Cooper, featuring the 3 x keynote presenters, and;

  • Nic Brundson, Director, Design WA- Department of Planning, Lands & Heritage

  • Venue:Crown Perth

Details

Description

The engineering and construction landscape is going through a phase of accelerated transformation due to forces both inside and outside the sector. Multiple megatrends (such as population growth, urbanisation, and innovation) are demanding greater consideration for long-term sustainability and creating fertile conditions  for rapid change. How we build (methods & materials) is thus evolving, and this will inevitably influence how residential property is developed in WA. How will the homes of the future be built?

Hear from-

  • Bert Bardoel, EY Oceania Engineering & Construction Leader, as he presents the findings of EY International’s research on the Construction Sector Transformation, including global trends and predictions.
  • Michael Berglin, Deputy CEO & Robin Gerum, Head of Business Development & Strategy at Serneke (Sweden’s fastest growing construction company) as they talk collaborative design for buildability & sustainability, construction planning & use of offsite prefabrication, and preparing for the future.
  • Bill Scanlan, EY Director will then release the findings of the UDIA WA commissioned research on the potential outcomes & implications of adopting modern housing construction methods here in WA.

Does using materials other than double brick affect housing affordability through reduced lot construction requirements and shorter construction time frames? What sort of sustainability outcomes can the use of different methods & materials drive?

This is your chance to hear insights on global best practice direct from international leaders, and be the first to hear the results of important local research.
