Formerly known as Piesse Brook Wines, Aldersyde is a stunning boutique winery located in the Bickley Valley and the oldest continually operating winery in the Perth Hills.

This is a traditional family winery in the truest sense. Specializing in hand crafted wines from fruit grown entirely on the estate vineyard, practically all the winemaking procedures are done by hand, from picking and sorting the grapes to winding up the hydraulic wooden basket press.

Relatives and friends join in and help at critical times, including vintage and pruning, but Aldersyde is essentially a mother-daughter operation, with Lara looking after the vines and winemaking and mother, Di, in charge of cellar door sales. 

Increasingly, the focus in the cellar is to produce more natural wines, using foot-treading and hand-plunging (pigéage) with pumpovers during fermentation and indigenous yeasts instead of manufactured yeasts and products.

Six wines are produced: Saignée, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Shiraz, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Production is limited to approximately 100 dozen per wine style and the wines are not available for retail elsewhere, making the cellar door experience quite unique.

Wines are available for tasting by appointment at the tiny cellar door, with the gorgeous wine-covered terrace overlooking the vines. Di runs the cellar door but Lara is often also available to chat whilst you savour a delicious glass of wine and Zoe the winery dog entertains the kids.


Larissa (also known as Lara) Bray is one of the quiet achievers of the Western Australian wine industry and a third-generation vigneron in the Perth Hills.

After a short career as a lawyer in Canberra and London, Lara studied winemaking at Adelaide University and then gained formidable experience by working vintage at iconic Australian wineries - Brokenwood, Mt Mary and Vasse Felix; Chard Farm in Central Otago; then Burgundy, Bordeaux, the Loire, Northern and Southern Rhone, and Barolo.

After working as assistant winemaker at Cape Mentelle from 2004 until 2007, Lara left to work with her mother, Di, at the family winery.

In 2008, Lara joined a distinguished group who have been dux of the Len Evans Tutorial - 'the most exclusive wine school in the world' says James Halliday, and has judged at wine shows throughout Australia and in New Zealand.


The climate in the Perth Hills is typically Mediterranean with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers, mediated by cooling afternoon sea breezes and night temperatures 2-3 degrees cooler than Perth or the Swan Valley. The climate has been likened to that of the Douro Valley in Portugal. MJT Kalamunda in the Bickley locality is 23.1°C, RH 45%, rainfall 900-1200mm.

Soils comprise underlying granitic quartz clays at depths from half a metre to 3 metres. The top vineyard and the top half of the bottom vineyard are planted on hilltop slopes and comprise gravels with medium to light loam content. The lower half of the bottom vineyard is in a gently sloping valley and consists of mostly loams and alluvial soils. Because of the underlying clay subsoil, soils tend to retain good moisture levels throughout the growing season. Drip irrigation is applied if necessary.

A small family winery with an expansive range of vintage wines to be enjoyed whilst relaxing at the open bar and on handcrafted jarrah picnic tables on the ridge of the stunning Bickley Valley.

As Kalamunda locals, Dennis and Carline Humphrey are no strangers to the terrain of the Perth Hills. With encouragement from local wine guru Peter Fimmel, Chardonnay and Semillon varieties were first planted in 1998 on the famous Red Gum soil high on the western ridge of the Bickley Valley.

The Wines

Carldenn Homestead Wines offer an expansive variety of reds, whites and sparkling wines designed to appeal to any palette. Each vintage has a unique character with different complexities, from the fresh fruit and creamy finish of the unwooded Chardonnay to the full-bodied, bold and delicious Shiraz.

Cellar Door

Located amongst the bushland of Walliston, Carldenn Homestead's cellar door includes an open bar and picnic area with handcrafted jarrah tables made by Dennis himself. After eating and drinking, you are free to wander amongst the vines.

Myattsfield owner Josh Davenport is a descendant of Joseph Myatt, who popularised and became Britain's leading producer of rhubarb in 1840. Josh converted his family farm to a vineyard in the late 1990s. After working at various wineries around the world, Josh returned home, met Rachel and together they built a winery at Myattsfield in 2006 and made their first wines in 2007. The Myattsfield Estate encompasses two vineyards and a 40 tonne winery in the picturesque Bickley and Carmel Valleys of the Perth Hills wine region.

The Wines

Drawing on similarities in climate between the Bickley Valley and inland areas of Spain and Portugal, Myattsfield varieties include Verdelho, Mourvedre, Touriga, Brown Muscat and Durif (of which Myattsfield has notably planted the first variety in WA), alongside more traditional Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot varieties.

Cellar Door

Myattsfield's classic corrugated iron cellar door surrounded with gum trees is open Friday to Sunday all year to taste a variety of wines often served by the vineyard's winemakers. Wine can also be purchased by the glass with a selection of gourmet cheeses to enjoy on the shaded verandah.

Plume Estate is nestled on the side of a hill on Glen Isla Road, and boasts stunning views of the wine region. It is run by husband and wife Jim and Audrey Volmer. The Wines The wine range includes a Vintage Sparkling, a Spanish Verdejo white wine, Rose, Pinot Noir, Shiraz-Viognier, Durif and Fortified Shiraz. Cellar Door The cellar door is open from 11:30am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and offers tastings of all the wines. The Food The cosy restaurant features modern, artful Tapas-style dishes, with spectacular views across the Valley making it an ideal setting for a picturesque lunch. Open from 11:30am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Bookings recommended.

The Wines

Lawnbrook Estate is the wine brand associated with the Packing Shed Restaurant and the small vineyard is set in the heart of the Bickley Valley. It is one of the many boutique family run vineyards in the Perth Hills Wine Region and produces wine from their Pinot, Chardonnay and Semillon vines as well as locally sourced fruit.  Their flagship Pinot Rose made in a dry French style is particularly popular especially when paired with a gourmet cheeseboard. 

The Food

The Packing Shed at Lawnbrook has a light lunch menu which is perfect for your wine stop. Food is prepared onsite using seasonal and local produce whenever possible, catering to various dietary requirements. Cosy in the winter months with a roasting potbelly always on the go, in warmer months, sit outside under the shadesail and Jacaranda tree or bring a picnic blanket and enjoy the afternoon relaxing on the lawn.
