Their huge, family-friendly cellar door is the perfect place to discover the world of WA’s extraordinary southern wine regions.

The Wines
3 Oceans Winemaking philosophy is simple; grow great fruit, nurture it through fermentation and maturation to bottle and let the vineyard terroir express itself in the wines. The range includes everything from easy drinking to ultra-premium Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Wine Tasting
The cellar door is one of the largest in the region and set up especially for kids, families and large groups. Complimentary tastings of over 10 wines are available every day from 10am to 5pm. Group tastings can be booked in advance and are required for large groups of 50+ people.

The Food
The café is open daily from 9am for breakfast and lunch and serves casual fare through to restaurant style seafood dishes, including the famous South-West marron. Locally-sourced Yahava Coffee is available with cakes and a kids menu.

Highlights
Kids will love their own designated hang-out zone which includes video games, toys, chalkboards and outdoor sports equipment. The grounds are large enough for a game of cricket!

Visiting in March? 3 Oceans is the home of the South West Craft Beer Festival, a lively day offering the opportunity to discover 120+ local brews from 20+ breweries, wineries and cideries based between Mandurah and Denmark.

Description

After Hours Wine is a small family vineyard located on the Carbunup River flat, a site known for its fertile alluvial soils. The soils, combined with Margaret River’s Mediterranean climate, provide a great micro-climate for producing high-quality wines. The Matthews family purchased the established vineyard in late 2005 and the following year embarked on the huge, labour-intensive task to transform the vineyard by reworking all of the vines to reduce fruit yields and improve wine quality. All wines are grown, made and bottled at the property by Winemaker Phil Potter

The Wines
The vineyard grows all of Margaret River’s hero varieties. All their wines, particularly recent vintages of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignons, have received many Gold Medals at wine shows around Australia. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon was a ‘Top 50 Wine’ in the Wine Show of Western Australia, 2016.

Description

Amato Vino are small-batch artisan winemakers based in the Margaret River wine region, Western Australia.

 

The winemaking philosophy is ‘lo-fi’, in that we embrace wild-ferments, minimal adjustments in the winery, gentle handling. Wines are typically unfined and unfiltered. We are hands-on in terms of the grunt work, the care and guidance, but with a hands off approach to the science of winemaking, using little or no inputs and employing traditional processes. An old-school approach yet with a modern flare for creativity and adventure.

 

Established in 2003 by owner/winemaker Brad Wehr, the labels and wine styles have continued to grow, covering traditional Margaret River varietals through to some eclectic and unusual grape varieties and winemaking methods.

 

Our winery is located a few minutes south-west of the Margaret River township. We work with a core group of independent growers who share our philosophy, employing organic and sustainable farming practices.

 

Our wines

AMATO VINO ‘wilds’

 The ‘wilds’ are home to our emerging Mediterranean varieties, micro-batches, skinsy ferments and other eclectic wines. Featuring single vineyards, hand-picks, natural ferments – and incorporating minimal winemaking input and unconventional vessels for fermentation/maturation – this is the wild stuff.

 

Packaged under labels bearing in-house artworks/designs/photography the ‘wilds’ include Teroldego, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Primitivo, Marsanne, Trousseau, Savagnin.

 

AMATO VINO ‘mantra’

The ‘mantra’ series is all about the classic Margies grape varieties, albeit with the Amato Vino lo-fi twist. The emphasis is on vineyard site & fruit purity, working with small fruit parcels to bring out the best from the each site. Wild ferments (open and barrel), no adds, no fining and filtration are all central to the mix.

 

Wines include a Barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

 

AMATO VINO ‘fusa’

‘Fusa’… the home for our blends (foo-za). Utilising emerging/alternative varieties as the basis for the blends we’re seeking to create juicy, fresh drinkability, yet complex and alluring wines – packed with flavour but oh-so light on their feet. The Bianco and Rosso are fruit-forward, fleshy and flavoursome versions of some of our favourite grape 

varieties and are made for short to mid-term drinking.

Named Gourmet Traveller WINE’s Star Cellar Door (2017), this relative new-comer estate has elevated itself into one of Margaret River’s prized wine destinations.

Amelia Park Wines began in 2009 led by coveted winemaker Jeremy Gordon, producing a hand-crafted wine range with grapes from Margaret River and Frankland River. Jeremy is well-known for his detailed approach and a highly celebrated tenure at Flametree Wines, during which time his Cabernet Merlot won Australia’s most coveted wine award, the Jimmy Watson Trophy.

The Wines

Amelia Park Wines range from highly-drinkable to collectable styles, with a focus on Margaret River’s signature varieties. Immense critical acclaim has been received since day one, including awards at the International Wine Challenge and Decanter Wine Awards for the Cabernet Sauvignons and Shiraz, in particular.

Wine Tasting

The architecturally designed cellar door makes a dramatic statement with its bold, decorative interiors and stunning views over the Wilyabrup Valley. Wine tastings are available daily or for more of a culinary experience, enjoy a wine flights paired with cheese and charcuterie in the ambient Cellar Door Barrel Room. Tours and private tastings can be booked in advance. 

The Food

A French-bistro inspired lunch menu is available daily at the Amelia Park Restaurant, where a wood fired oven and grill is centrepiece to much of the food. The cuisine is modern and seasonal with a focus toward locally-sourced produce. It is operated by local hospitality legends, the Gold Plate awarded Blair and Renee Allen who were previous owners of Dunsborough favourite, Piari & Co.

This beautiful estate offers creative tastings, a fine-dining restaurant, casual dining Riviera Bar, Taphouse, car gallery and WA’s first surfing museum. Established in 2010 by Rob and Tash Arthur, Arthur Wines specialises in making fortified wines in the heart of the Margaret River wine region. Winemaker Tash developed a keen interest in fortified wines whilst working in Portugal and Rutherglen and Rob previously worked at Leeuwin Estate.

Hand crafted using traditional methods all wines are made in small batch format and are then patiently aged in a solera system until they are ready to be blended and enjoyed.

Description

Located in Boyup Brook, Beulah Wines began operations in 2007 within a 10 hectare vineyard. Owned by Craig, Jodi and Richard Nield. The estate grown wines have received a number of awards at local and national wine shows.

Description

In 2005 Naomi and Ben purchased their vineyard in Wilyabrup, Margaret River. They sold grapes to other winemakers whilst completing the organic certification process for their vineyard. At the same time, the pair enjoyed an epic three-year trip of wine tasting and surfing in Europe to discover the spectrum of old-world techniques through which wine can be made without additives.

Naomi and Ben returned to their vineyard in 2009 and Blind Corner began. The winery now owns two Margaret River vineyards, a winemaking facility and a bottling line, all of which are certified organic and biodynamic by Australian Certified Organic. 


The Wines

Fusing old world techniques and new world knowledge, Blind Corner create wines using only natural yeasts and minimal additives. The label is known for its endless experimentation with creative winemaking, for instance air-drying, skins ferments and carbonic maceration. This is done under their constant questioning of, ‘what would happen if we do this?’ Much of the range features Margaret River varieties made in highly original ways, like an early harvest Shiraz, air-dried Cabernet Sauvignon and a full-skins fermented Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend.

Blue Poles Vineyard

Description

This winery takes its name from an iconic Australian painting, ‘Blue Poles: Number 11, 1952) by artist Jackson Pollock, who was known for paintings of grace, depth, wonder and awe. The Blue Poles painting was a watershed acquisition by the National Australian Gallery in the 1970s, representing a move toward from colonial ties to free thought and independence in Australia. Blue Poles vineyard aims to emulate these traits in its vineyard and wines.

The vineyard is a joint venture between two geologists, Mark Gifford and Tim Markwell, who committed to their business plan from a minesite donga in 2001. They inspected thousands of kilometres of land before settling on the property 15 kilometres east of the Margaret River township for its large pockets of iron-rich gravels over clay, slopes to the south-west and cool climate for the long ripening of fruit.

A total of 7 hectares have been planted at Blue Poles vineyard, with 6.3 hectares dedicated to Merlot, Shiraz Cabernet Franc and Viognier. The remainder is dedicated to small sections of various trial varieties.

The wine range includes a Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Shiraz and Italian varieties; Fiano and Teroldego. The flagship ‘Allouran’ is a Bordeaux-inspired blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc and represents the owners’ core belief that location, soil, climate, passion and history can achieve special wines.

Carpe Diem is the heart-warming winery of Gianfranco and Francesco Anderle, a delightful winemaking family who visited Margaret River in 2000, fell in love with the region and sold up their assets to chase their dreams with a 75 hectare property in Wilyabrup. Hence the name, Carpe Diem!

The Wines
Winemaker Gianfranco trained at the world’s oldest wine school in Europe, Conegliano in Northern Italy. He brings a strong European approach to his winemaking, every aspect of which he does in his custom-built winery, including hand-bottling his wines. Italian varieties are the focus such as pinot grigio, schiaffo, vermentino, nebiolo and decantato. 

Wine Tasting
Known for the beautiful Italian hospitality, Gianfranco and Francesca love meeting their guests and personally providing complimentary tastings of all the wines from their winery-based tasting table. Description

In 2004 Sam Castelli purchased land and a partially finished winery building on what is now the Castelli Estate, with the intention of using it as a family holiday home.  After finishing the winery building, Sam decided to continue what the previous owners had started and turned it into an operating winery after all. So began a bright and star-studded journey. 

Sam Castelli didn’t stop the construction at a winery. The estate now boasts a cellar door which is open Wednesday to Monday, 11am to 4 pm, and an authentic Italian restaurant which is open Wednesday to Monday 12 pm to 3:30 pm for lunch and  Fridays and Saturdays 6pm to 9:30pm for dinner.  And also the newly renovated accomodation just next to the restaurant, with five Deluxe king size en-suites and expansive views over Mt Lindsay, the vineyards, and the green rolling hills and Karri trees so typical of the Denmark countryside.

The Wines
The wines are made by local winemaker Mike Garland and are consistently awarded high scores from national wine press, and enjoy medals and trophies at wine shows around Australia.

Five ranges of wine are sourced exclusively from the Home Block vineyard in Denmark, and vineyards in Mt Barker, Pemberton, The Porongurups and Frankland River.

Wines available to try and purchase include riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet, grenache, a sparkling and a dessert wine.  The winery also makes a selection of alternate varietal wines, including an orange chardonnay and an iced viognier.

Flametree Wines catapulted into Australia’s winemaking hall of fame in 2008 when its first ever red wine, a Cabernet Merlot, won the Jimmy Watson Trophy, Australia’s most-respected national wine prize. The following year it was a finalist for the same award. Substantial critical acclaim has followed.

The Estate was established by the Towner family in 2007 and was created with a vision to become a world-recognised winery committed to producing consistent, distinctive Margaret River wines. 

The Wines
The estate specialises in Chardonnay, Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Shiraz, Rose, Sparkling and Dessert varieties. 

Wine Tasting
The exceptional wines are brought to life at its laid-back, architecturally-designed Estate. Think Hampton’s style meets relaxed Margaret River atmosphere, with a Cape Cod design building, enviable deck, open fireplace and manicured gardens.

The Cellar Door’s timber joinery, natural stone, American Walnut floors and shingle roofing create an atmosphere that is both welcoming and grandiose. Wine tastings are relaxed and unpretentious – geared solely around the pleasure of enjoying exceptional wines. Group bookings can be arranged in advance. 

The Food
Visitors can create their own custom gourmet platter of cheese, antipasto and charcuterie, from outstanding local producers like Cambray Cheese, the Venison Farm and the Margaret River Pantry. These are best enjoyed with a glass of wine, of course!

Unique Highlights
The Art Gallery hosts an annual program of exhibitions that showcase and support the local art community. Pets and children are welcome and will love the wide, spacious lawn area to play on. There is also a wheelchair accessible ramp at the front entrance.

Description

The winery is owned and operated by Elizabeth Reed, who first purchased one tonne of Riesling grapes from the Porongurup region in 2010. Flor Marchéwas hence born, with the idea to source small parcels of fruit from single vineyards across the southwest of Western Australia.

The estate’s approach to winemaking is based on the understanding that the most important characteristics of wine come directly from the vineyard, and as such, Flor Marché’s wines have been crafted to distinctly express the influences of soil, environment and climate of the traditionally south-west grape varieties. 

The Wines

The winery’s extensive range features Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache (sourced from 60 year old vines in the Swan Valley).

Cellar Door

Flor Marché currently operates a cellar door from the gallery area of the building; in an exciting new partnership with Wilyabrup Dreaming, a local pottery established in the 1990s. The charming cellar door perfectly reflects the long history of art and wine within the region and is open Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.  

Forester Estate

Surrounded by huge Eucalypt trees, Forester Estate is a new-generation, family-owned and operated winery producing award-winning wines in a Northern Margaret River style.

Description

Built in 2002, Forester Estate focuses on making wines that showcase northern Margaret River’s wine style, leaning towards lighter, fruitier white wines and finely structured, elegant reds.

The vineyard was planted in 1995 and acquired by owners Kevin and Jenny McKay in 2001. The wines are made from estate-grown fruit and a selection of small “gems” of fruit sourced from the hills and valleys of nearby vineyards.

Magnificent Eucalypt trees surround the Estate, reminiscent of a thriving forestry trade, the primary industry of the region from the 1850s. The Estate still has a saw pit that was used by the original pioneers to mill timber, which was then transported by ox and cart to Yallingup-Siding, the nearby railway station. This timber, especially the hardwood Mahogany (Jarrah), was exported around the world. Even today, many streets of London lie on the Jarrah trees milled from the forests of Margaret River.

The name Forester Estate is derived from this history.

Description

Eastwell Estate is located next to the Forest Hill vineyard on the banks of the Hay River, 15kms west of Mt Barker. The Eastwell family, parents Adrian and Margaret and their son Matt, also produce Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the property’s olive grove, planted with Italian varieties.

 

The Wines:

The original vineyard was planted in 1998 and the property purchased by the Eastwell family in 2006. Initially just selling the fruit to local winemakers, they soon decided to produce wines under the Eastwell Estate label. From 2008, all vineyard practices incorporate biodynamic preparations and organic practices, and the winemaking processes are as natural as possible.  There are no pesticides or herbicides used in the vineyards.  The 15 acres of vineyards are planted with semillon, sauvignon blanc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. 

 

Wine Tasting:

There is no cellar door available to taste the wines, however the wines and olive oil are available for purchase via their online shop.

Grace Farm

Description

Nestled in the Cowaramup Brook valley and the lee of the Leeuwin Ridge in the Margaret River sub region of Wilyabrup, Grace Farm is a small, family-owned vineyard that uses organic principles to produce premium handcrafted wines.

Owned by John and Elizabeth Mair, Grace Farm was planted in 2006 and the first vintage produced in 2010. Grace Farm was one of the first vineyards in the district to plant the vines into weed-matting, avoiding the use of herbicide sprays which often accompany vineyard establishment. The Mair family has a keen interest in the unique biodiversity values present on Grace Farm. Floristic and avian fauna surveys have been carried out and monitoring of populations is ongoing. 

The farmhouse was designed according to solar passive design principles and supports a roof-top solar array which feeds excess power back into the electricity grid, helping to reduce the property’s carbon footprint.

The Wines

The award-winning range includes a barrel-matured Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Burgundian style Chardonnay and two quintessential Margaret River style Cabernets.

Wine Tastings

Private tastings can be booked. They are held on the deck of the farmhouse in the company of viticulturist Tim Quinlan and include the opportunity to sample all wines while enjoying views over the vineyard and valley. A tour of the vineyard may also be included. Winemaker Jonathan Mettam is often present for larger group bookings.

Description

Hawker Ridge Wines is situated just outside of the Kendenup township, 20km north of Mount Barker. The first vines were planted in 2001 and the first wines, Riesling and Shiraz, were made from the 2004 vintage . The vineyard sits atop a local high point, Hawker Ridge, on well-drained gravelly loam, an ideal location for growing cool climate wines.

By the 2006 vintage (third vintage), the wines began winning medals at serious wine shows, including the Qantas Mount Barker Wine Show and Sydney Royal Show.

The focus continues to be Great Southern regional specialties Riesling and Shiraz and the wines are all are available to order online or by appointment at the winery.

Michael Hutton grew up on a vineyard, then pursued a career as an architect before following his passion back to Margaret River. These days Michael makes wines in his garage in the traditional ‘garagiste’ style. (definition: a passionate winemaker who creates fine, limited wines, occasionally from his or her garage).

Three wines are made; a Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The fruit is sourced from exceptional local vineyards in Margaret River, handpicked and made with passion and precision in tiny batches.

Warwick Lavis and Geoff and Karyn Cross purchased the then-named Peperilly Estate in 2003. Situated in the picturesque Ferguson Valley in the hills of Geographe wine region, the first vines were planted in 1999 on sloping hillsides; with superb red gravelly loam soils and full access to the coastal breeze of the Indian Ocean.  West Australian Peppermint Trees line the Henty Brook, the natural water source for the estate's vineyard. Winemaker Michael Ng was born in China and worked vintages in Turkey, New Zealand and St-Emillon before returning to Western Australia.

One of WA’s most awarded winemakers, Larry Cherubino Wines makes an expressive range from a collection of estate-owned vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton and the Great Southern (Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup areas). The label began in Frankland River in 2004 when Larry and wife, Edwina purchased an historic property called Riversdale. The inaugural 2005 vintage wines were made in the family’s spare room! These days they are made in a well-equipped winery in Margaret River.

Larry Cherubino Wines was named James Halliday’s Australian Winery of the Year in 2011, and also Australia’s Best-Value Winery by Halliday in 2017. Winemaker Larry Cherubino has a string of Winemaker of the Year nominations with leading Australian and UK wine media.

The Wines
Following the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard, Larry Cherubino Wines are made from six specialty vineyards in Western Australia’s leading south-west wine regions. The wines are estate-grown and the vineyards follow a mix of principles from the schools of organics and traditional farming with the aim to encourage the vines to exist in a healthy ecosystem, for plant health. The range has a characterful selection of site-driven examples of Riesling and Chardonnay, alongside alternative varieties including Fiano and Pinot Blanc. Classic Cabernet and Shiraz are made too.

Wine Tasting
Enjoy a seasonal range of wines for tasting at all times alongside a selection of cellar door exclusives. An enomatic machine holds a curated range of rare back vintage wines which can be enjoyed as educational (and highly enjoyable) flights. Private tastings in the board room or barrel room can be booked in advance for groups. Antipasti and dinners are available by special arrangement.

Description

David and Anne Mazza were inspired by the great wines of Rioja and the Douro Valley, and continue a longstanding family tradition of making wine. Established in 2002 near Donnybrook, the Mazza Wines vineyard is planted with six Spanish and Portugese varieties, and is the only of its kind in the Geographe Region. The vineyard has ten acres of carefully-managed vines that receive a lot of attention, where the most labour-intensive practices are a priority in the vineyard to grow the best quality grapes.

The Wines

Mazza Wines produces six red grape varieties; Bastardo, Graciano, Tempranillo, Tinta Cao, Touriga Nacional and Sousao. From these, straight varietal wines, a Tempranillo Graciano blend and fortified wines are produced.

Description

McHenry Honen is the fusion of an accomplished fine-wine retailer, Murray McHenry, with one of Margaret River’s most respected pioneers David Hohnen (founder of Cape Mentelle).

Their aim is to make the most site expressive wines they can from their three distinct family vineyards in Margaret River, all of which are 100% biodynamic. Biodynamics revolves around an environmental equilibrium. It is similar to organic farming, in that both preclude the use of chemicals, however biodynamic farming incorporates ideas about a vineyard as an ecosystem, and also accounts for astrological influences and lunar cycles.

The Wines
There is an unwavering focus on making distinct, site expressive wines and on embracing the individual characters that come from the different plots in the vineyards. This is achieved through minimal-intervention using wild yeasts, minimal sulphur, no filtration and large format oak and concrete fermenters. The range includes Margaret River’s specialty varieties and a few unexpected surprises. More than five single-site Chardonnays showcase just how different the flavours of this variety can be because of different site influences in the vineyard.

Wine Tasting
The cellar door is conveniently located on Caves Road, just five minutes from Margaret River town. The wines can be tasted between 10.30 and 4.30pm daily.

Unique Highlights
Don’t leave without some of David Hohnen’s smoked cold meats, sausages and traditionally made smallgoods from side venture, The Farm House Margaret River. These are sold from the McHenry Hohnen Cellar Door. David works with farmers around the region on this venture and his meats have a great reputation, especially with many of the local winemakers to enjoy with their friends and wines!
