Description

After Hours Wine is a small family vineyard located on the Carbunup River flat, a site known for its fertile alluvial soils. The soils, combined with Margaret River’s Mediterranean climate, provide a great micro-climate for producing high-quality wines. The Matthews family purchased the established vineyard in late 2005 and the following year embarked on the huge, labour-intensive task to transform the vineyard by reworking all of the vines to reduce fruit yields and improve wine quality. All wines are grown, made and bottled at the property by Winemaker Phil Potter

The Wines
The vineyard grows all of Margaret River’s hero varieties. All their wines, particularly recent vintages of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignons, have received many Gold Medals at wine shows around Australia. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon was a ‘Top 50 Wine’ in the Wine Show of Western Australia, 2016.

Description

Amato Vino are small-batch artisan winemakers based in the Margaret River wine region, Western Australia.

The winemaking philosophy is ‘lo-fi’, in that we embrace wild-ferments, minimal adjustments in the winery, gentle handling. Wines are typically unfined and unfiltered. We are hands-on in terms of the grunt work, the care and guidance, but with a hands off approach to the science of winemaking, using little or no inputs and employing traditional processes. An old-school approach yet with a modern flare for creativity and adventure.

Established in 2003 by owner/winemaker Brad Wehr, the labels and wine styles have continued to grow, covering traditional Margaret River varietals through to some eclectic and unusual grape varieties and winemaking methods.

Our winery is located a few minutes south-west of the Margaret River township. We work with a core group of independent growers who share our philosophy, employing organic and sustainable farming practices.

Our wines

AMATO VINO ‘wilds’

The ‘wilds’ are home to our emerging Mediterranean varieties, micro-batches, skinsy ferments and other eclectic wines. Featuring single vineyards, hand-picks, natural ferments – and incorporating minimal winemaking input and unconventional vessels for fermentation/maturation – this is the wild stuff.

Packaged under labels bearing in-house artworks/designs/photography the ‘wilds’ include Teroldego, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Primitivo, Marsanne, Trousseau, Savagnin.

AMATO VINO ‘mantra’

The ‘mantra’ series is all about the classic Margies grape varieties, albeit with the Amato Vino lo-fi twist. The emphasis is on vineyard site & fruit purity, working with small fruit parcels to bring out the best from the each site. Wild ferments (open and barrel), no adds, no fining and filtration are all central to the mix.

Wines include a Barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

AMATO VINO ‘fusa’

‘Fusa’… the home for our blends (foo-za). Utilising emerging/alternative varieties as the basis for the blends we’re seeking to create juicy, fresh drinkability, yet complex and alluring wines – packed with flavour but oh-so light on their feet. The Bianco and Rosso are fruit-forward, fleshy and flavoursome versions of some of our favourite grape

varieties and are made for short to mid-term drinking.

Private winery tours/tasting are available by appointment, please contact [email protected] for more info

Description

Winner of James Halliday’s Dark Horse Winery of the Year 2017, Arlewood is a family-owned, boutique producer making elegant wines the Gosatti family and friends love to drink.

Arlewood's winemaking is inspired by the village of La Bratta in Northern Italy where hands-on owner Gary Gossatti’s ancestors were grape growers for the local community winery. The label began back in 1984 and in 2009 relocated to the cooler Forest Grove property, located 10km south of Margaret.

The Wines
Margaret River’s signature varieties are made with creative and intuitive winemaking techniques. Look out for the European inspired La Bratta Bianco and La Bratta Rosso. The Bianco has been a major hit with the critics, with James Halliday naming it a ‘Wow Factor White’ and saying it was, “a wine that brought goose-bumps due to my unabashed love of fine white Bordeaux… This is a tour de force of winemaking, underlain by a profound love and understanding of the fruit and its origins.”

Wine Tasting
Laid back, tastings of all the wines are available from 11am Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A must see secret cellar door.

The 22 acre vineyard is part of a family owned farm that has been passed down through five generations. It was cleared by hand by current owner Ryan Gibbs’ ancestor Samuel in the late 1800s. Various crops and herds were farmed on the land until vines were planted in 1998. The property is 200 hectares in total with approximately 9 hectares under vine.

The Ferguson Valley's climate is similar to south-west Europe; with cool wet winters and warm dry summers, perfect for grape-growing on the property's 200 hectares. Native Australian forests surrounding the property provides pure, clean water for vines throughout the summer, supported by fertile loam helping to retain moisture.

The first harvest in 1999 was a momentous occasion.

The vineyard follows biological farming principles and the wines are 100% estate grown and made. The team believe it’s the small things that make the big difference and make their wines extra special. These days daughter Bronnley Cahill is in the winemaking driver’s seat.

Description

This family owned, single-vineyard property was established in 1999. The Fokkema family selected the site for its ideal gravel loam soils, ample clean water and northern-facing slopes. The vineyard has been farmed organically for 15 years and has completed its 'Certified Organic' accreditation. The Churchview vineyard is known to grow Margaret River's most extensive amount of varieties within a single vineyard, with sixteen different types of grapes planted. The Wines Many of the wines are matured in oak, and Churchview prides itself on investing in the best quality French oak. Four wine ranges are made from the diverse varieties within the vineyard and offer easy drinking through to rare and fine collector wines. All the classic Margaret River varieties are made. The St Johns range features less-common varieties including a Zinfandel, Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Viognier and Marsanne. Wine Tasting The diverse wine range can be tasted at the Cellar Door which is located within a period cottage at the estate. The Heritage Listed St John the Baptist Anglican Church can be seen from the tasting room, hence the name. Many of the wines cannot be found for purchase anywhere other than the cellar door. Allow 30 minutes for a full tasting. Open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday. Dogs are welcome (on leash) and visitors are invited to bring a picnic and make a day of enjoying the beautiful wines, stunning vineyard views and manicured gardens. Unique Highlights Those seeking curio wines will love discovering the wild fermented Riesling, Viognier and Chenin Blanc; varieties not often seen in Margaret River. Halliday Rating 5 Stars

What began as a ‘retirement dream’ in the late nineties for Hilde and Duke has turned into an incredibly successful winery business.  The 25 acres of vineyards are planted exclusively to riesling, cabernet and shiraz, and due to the cool climate location at the western end of the Porongurup Range, the wines enjoy an elegance and spice that is endemic to the region.

Hilde Ranson is a celebrated artist and responsible for designing the curved cellar door overlooking the vineyard and the picturesque Stirling and Porongurup Ranges. The cellar door also doubles as an art gallery, Hildes Gallery at Dukes, and a function area.

The winery has been listed in James Halliday’s Wine Companion’s Top 100 wineries every year since 2013, and in 2017 the Magpie Hill riesling was James Halliday’s Riesling of the Year.

The Wines
With celebrated local winemaker Rob Diletti at the winemaking helm, the wine range is concise and very high quality, and Dukes is widely regarded as one of the best riesling producers in Australia. The wine ranges consist of four Single Vineyard wines, four Magpie Hill Reserve wines, and a sparkling shiraz and riesling.

The cool climate vineyard produces age-worthy wines of elegance, structure and finesse.

Description

Set in the beautiful Forest Grove just south of Margaret River is this tiny grape-grower and winemaker. Flowstone is the creation of local winemaker of 30+ years of experience, Stuart Pimms and wine fanatic businessman, Phil Giglia.

Their vineyard is located 6km inland from the Indian Ocean, where the Margaret River Plateau joins the Leeuwin Naturaliste coastal strip. Their approach is hands-on throughout the journey from grape to glass. Retaining their boutique size allows for an intimate understanding of the vines, the land and the production.

Critic James Halliday said of Flowstone early on, “every now and then a new producer will pop up with wines that are really good, and ultimately vie for inclusion in the list of ten of the best new wineries in the next Companion... this is one new winery that will quite certainly be in the top 10, for its ranks among the best I can remember."

The Wines
With an aim to be interesting and enjoyable, Flowstone creates both regional classics and some surprise styles like a rich and Gewurztraminer and Cabernet Sauvignon Touriga (a Portuguese twist in Margaret River’s famed red). Curious wine enthusiasts will love discovering these exciting interpretations that reflect wine styles the owners love to drink.
