Description

Located in Frankland River 90 kilometres from the coast amidst the Great Southern’s valleys and slopes, the Ferngrove site was selected in 1998. The vineyard is nestled in undulating farmland surrounded by olive groves, wheat, sheep and cattle which enable a sheltered environment to grow grapes, while it still receives the cooling ocean influence for elegant fruit.

Ferngrove Wines are known for their intense flavour, fine acid and tannins that are truly reflective of the Frankland River region style. A range of varieties are produced across multiple price brackets, delivering value at each level. Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet blends are the focus.

The winery is also the site of one of Australia’s largest winery solar power systems, using 696 panels to power all of its operations.

Wine Tasting

The grand Ferngrove Wines cellar door is situated among the stunning Stirling Ranges in Frankland River. Wine tastings are offered daily from 10am – 4pm.

Description

 

Established in 2017, the Haywood Wine Company is located at the Island Brook Estate to the north of the Margaret River wine region. The Metricup vineyard was first planted in 1985, utilising specific grape varieties to match the property's well drained gravel loam soils.

The wines made include Cabernet Rose, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cellar Door

The charm of this family operation is evident in its relaxed cellar door; where you can meet the grape grower, winemaker and marketing director all at once! Open Monday to Saturday 10am - 5pm.

Description

Sandalford has been making superb West Australian wines for over 175 years. While the primary property is in the Swan Valley, the Margaret River cellar door is worth visiting, a cleverly-designed space made from rammed earth, surrounded by beautiful, country gardens, vines and native forest. Open daily from 10am to 5pm, a pergola and onsite BBQs make Sandalford a lovely place for a picnic with the family.

A Notable History
Sandalford was established in 1840 in the early days of the Perth colony’s settlement. The property was granted to WA’s first Surveyor General John Septimus Roe by Queen Victoria, to honour his 57 years of Service to the Commonwealth. He named it Sandalford after a priory in his original home of Birkshire, England.

The property had a diverse agricultural history and originally thrived growing table grapes, which became a lucrative export. Winemaking accelerated after World War II with a growing community of Croatian and Italian migrants bringing vast knowledge and techniques to the young Swan Valley wine industry. In 1970 the Roe family expanded to Margaret River, planting a vineyard on prime land in Wilyabrup.

In 1990, Sandalford was acquired by the Prendiville family, who own a portfolio of iconic tourism and hospitality establishments around WA. The Prendiville’s have invested significantly in the brand, the wines and the impressive estate.

The Wines
Sandalford makes five ranges of wines from its vineyards in the Swan Valley and Margaret River. There are over 25 wines, including sparkling, red, white, dessert and fortified wines. The winery incorporates the state-of-the-art-technology, while retaining winemaking traditions, such as small batch fruit processing and using the best quality French and American oak.

Wine Tasting
The entire Sandalford wine range (and often some other special wines) can be tasted at their Margaret River cellar door and grand Swan Valley estate. The Margaret River cellar door is a cleverly-designed space, made from rammed earth. It is surrounded by beautiful, country gardens, vines and native forest.

Unique Highlights

Description

The 10 hectare property was purchased in 1991 by Phil and Mary Smith, who wished to partake in horticulture from a base nearby Bunbury where Phil works as an anaesthetist. The property was planted with citrus trees and table grapes, before they made the exciting progression to wine grapes on the estate in 1997. Subsequent plantings ensued . With focus on extraction and blending to craft the perfect wine, with minimal impact the team at Saint Aidan aim to create 'Art in a Bottle'. 

Home grown varietals include Chardonnay, Cabernet, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Malbec and Tempranillo.

Cellar Door

Nestled between the Sauvignon and Semillon vines and the Ferguson River is the rammed earth Cellar Door Restaurant. The building was sympathetically designed to blend in with the surroundings and reflect the design of the neighbouring Church from where the estate takes its name. Saint Aidan's award-winning wines can be sampled Monday to Friday 11am - 4pm, and weekends 11am - 5pm. A large range of homemade preserves like ‘Grandmas Tomato Relish’ are also available to purchase, as is a range of artwork from regional artists.

The Food

The Cellar Door Restaurant Menu focuses on the best seasonal offerings, using local ingredients wherever possible for soups, mains and sumptious desserts. The recently refurbished space can seat up to 60 guests in climate controlled comfort.

There are also picnic and gas barbecue facilities under the Peppermint trees at the estate, on the banks of the Ferguson River with plenty of space and family cricket games are welcomed!

St Aidan Wines also hosts a variety of Events throughout the year from their Summer Film on the Ferguson Outdoor Cinema to the iconic Annual Tempranillo Tasting Day in August.

The 150 seat Function Centre adjacent to the Cellar Door is an ideal Venue for Weddings, Corporate or other Special Events.

Vineyard 28

Experience the 'little Italy' of the Geographe region through Italian varieties of Arneis, Dolcetto Freddo and rare Nebbiolo wines at this estate, operated passionately by the Cumbers family.

Description

Back in 1989, a Kiwi girl named Pip met a West Aussie boy named Mark whilst working in Melbourne. The two shared a love of all things to do with wine, and in 1997 relocated to WA, purchasing a 10 acre property near Harvey (that was later named Vineyard 28). Some twenty years later, the property now boasts an extensive vineyard planted with mostly Italian varieties.

'28' is the colloquial name for the Port Lincoln Ringneck, a local parrot, due to their contact call, a whistled "twenty-eight". When planting the first vines, these cheeky birds were a little too helpful, thus it was decided to take their name for the property.

The Wines

Enjoy Italian varieties - Arneis, Dolcetto, Moscato and Nebbiolo wines alongside classic Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cellar Door  - Open 10am to 5pm - Thursday to Sunday

It was a family effort to create the cellar door, built from Lake Clifton limestone in 2005. Brimming with colour, vibrancy and of course, wine, the cellar door offers friendly tastings of lesser seen Piedmontese grape varieties and is open Thursday to Monday from 10am - 5pm.

Indulge all your senses with an extensive range of wines, that cater to all tastes, from crisp dry whites, to rich robust reds, and some sweeter styles as well.

They offer a range of fine wine experiences accompanied by locally sourced produce, all served with good old fashioned hospitality, hosted in their purpose built limestone cellar door. Enjoy the peace of the forest surrounds and panoramic views over farmland to the Eastern Scarp.

Basic wine tasting starts at $2 per person.

The cellar door also features a spacious picnic area and barbecue facilities for a BYO lunch, and a unique collection of colourful Patchwork Quilts and works by local artists.

Description

Their vineyard is located at a unique site south of Busselton, 170 metres above sea level in the Whicher Range to take full advantage of the cool winds that arrive off the Southern Ocean during Summer. The soils are gravelly ironstone sandy loam, similar to the highly-acclaimed Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River. The vineyard was planted in 2004 with Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. New plantings of Malbec and Mourvedre have been added in recent years.

The Wines
An artisan wine producer, Whicher Ridge makes a range of sparkling and table wines which are single vineyard, single region wines. The grapes are sourced from its own vineyard and from vineyards in other WA wine regions including Frankland River in the Great Southern, and Margaret River.

Wine Tasting
The farm-style cellar door is open Thursday to Monday. Choose from a variety of tasting experiences, including an in-depth tasting and Wine Sensory Garden Tour which can be booked in advance. Enjoy the unique opportunity to taste with the winemaker and gain a firsthand understanding of three of Western Australia’s wine regions, and the philosophy behind the making of each of the wines. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic lunch, and stay a little longer to enjoy the peaceful, rural landscape and play a game of petanque. Dogs are also welcome to visit as long as they kept are on a lead.

Unique Highlights
Whicher Ridge is the only winery in Australia with a specially themed and planted Wine Sensory Garden. This is the centre piece of the wine tasting experience, with it’s plantings of fruit trees, herbs, flowers and seasonal vegetables which describe and match the flavours, textures and styles of the award winning Whicher Ridge Wines. Visitors can ‘Pick and Sip’ their way around the Garden, immersing all of their five senses in the experience and discovering along the way how to describe the flavours that they are tasting in a wine as well as learning how simple it is to pair food with wine.

Description

In 1976 school teachers Kevin and Marian Squance planted a tiny vineyard with Verdehlo, Semillon, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. Over forty years on, and with two vineyards, 25 hectares of vines and a new generation of the family running the show, this quaint little winery has become one of Margaret River’s most prestigious, boutique producers.

The Willespie vineyard sites were selected for their French-like qualities; particularly their layered, well-draining gravel soils which are perfect for premium viticulture. The name Willespie, blends the region Wilyabrup and the French word espérer meaning ‘to hope’.

The Wines

The varietal wines are made with modern viticultural practices and minimal winemaking intervention. In addition to their ‘Old School Chardonnay and Semillon’, the range includes all the regional classics; Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Shiraz. Sweeter palates will love trying the rare Verdelho.

Cellar Door

Nestled amongst the picturesque setting of expansive vineyards, rolling hills and natural bushland, the cellar door is built from stone and timber sourced from the property. Wine tastings are available 10.30am to 5pm daily, except Wednesdays.
