The Wines
3 Oceans Winemaking philosophy is simple; grow great fruit, nurture it through fermentation and maturation to bottle and let the vineyard terroir express itself in the wines. The range includes everything from easy drinking to ultra-premium Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Wine Tasting
The cellar door is one of the largest in the region and set up especially for kids, families and large groups. Complimentary tastings of over 10 wines are available every day from 10am to 5pm. Group tastings can be booked in advance and are required for large groups of 50+ people.

The Food
The café is open daily from 9am for breakfast and lunch and serves casual fare through to restaurant style seafood dishes, including the famous South-West marron. Locally-sourced Yahava Coffee is available with cakes and a kids menu.

Highlights
Kids will love their own designated hang-out zone which includes video games, toys, chalkboards and outdoor sports equipment. The grounds are large enough for a game of cricket!

Visiting in March? 3 Oceans is the home of the South West Craft Beer Festival, a lively day offering the opportunity to discover 120+ local brews from 20+ breweries, wineries and cideries based between Mandurah and Denmark.

Description

Established in 1998 in Mt Barker by husband and wife Joanne and John, 3 Drops 15ha of vineyards is planted mostly with riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, cabernet, pinot and shiraz.  In 2002, Rob Diletti joined as winemaker and brought great acclaim, awards and trophies to the winery. 

The olive grove has some 2000 olive trees planted, including (Italian, Greek and Spanish varieties. and is a significant part of the property.  The olives, like the grapes, take on cool-climate characteristics and the extra virgin olive oil is well-known for its complex, balanced, spicy flavours. 

The winery exports to China, Hong Kong and South Korea.

The Wines
The range of wines at 3 Drops is concise and play to the strengths of the region, in particular, the highly regarded and age-worthy riesling and elegant pinot noir. Winemaker Rob Diletti, who was awarded James Halliday’s Winemaker of the Year in 2014, has produced some of the region’s best examples. The sauvignon blanc and cabernets, a blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, were the first wines to be produced. The range has since expanded to eight wines including shiraz, merlot, chardonnay, a rose, riesling and pinot noir.

There is no cellar door open to the public.

The pinot noir, the riesling, and the extra-virgin olive oil, which is available for purchase in good food merchants in Mt Barker town, and surrounding towns.

Description

Mary and Mike Dilworth established Abbey Creek in 1990 and the original pinot noir and riesling vines were planted in the same year. The cabernet vines were planted in 1993 and now grafted to pinot noir, and the sauvignon blanc vines were planted much later in 2006. Mike remains in the role of viticulturist and Rob Diletti makes the wines.

The name ‘Abbey Creek’ is a combination of two geological markers at the estate: the creek that runs (in winter) alongside the vineyard; and the view of The Abbey in the Stirling Range, WA’s highest collection of peaks. The vineyards are nestled on the northern slope of the Porongurup range, providing a dramatic backdrop when looking over the vineyard towards the main house.

The Wines
The Porongurup sub-region in the Great Southern is known for producing long-lived rieslings with distinct floral characteristics, and pinots that show bright cherry, pomegranate and red berry characteristics. The wines have been time and again selected for medals and trophies at both regional and national wine shows within Australia, claiming a total of 9 wine show trophies.   

Wine Tasting
Visitors can enjoy the wines on tasting at the cellar door (open 7 days 10-5 ‘when the flag is flying and the sign is out’), an old shearing shed with views over the vineyards and the Kalgan plain.

The view of the Porongurup Range, and the proximity to it.  The wine range is magnificent and concise, the views are picturesque.

Description

Located just outside of the town of Frankland River, the Alkoomi estate is part of a 1220 acre family property, settled in 1946 by Sandy’s grandparents.  The land was originally used for farming livestock and grain. In 1971, the first hectare of cabernet vines was planted and has since expanded to approximately 100ha and include shiraz, malbec, riesling and sauvignon blanc.  The stone-walled cellar door overlooks the vineyards to the south and the vast landscape beyond. Open seven days a week, from 10am - 5pm, the cellar door also serves as a function centre for weddings and other large events.

The wine labels each feature the iconic Australian Grass Tree, and the icon wines are named after native Australian timbers: Wandoo, Blackbutt, Melaleuca and Jarrah.

The Wines
Winemaker Andrew Cherry has been with the Hallett family since 2010 and has amassed an impressive collection of medals, trophies and high scores for the Alkoomi wines.  The portfolio contains three separate ranges, the Icon wines (the best from each vintage), the Black Label wines (intended for mid-long term cellaring, premium fruit), and the White Label wines (intended for early drinking, short term cellaring). Varieties include riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, cabernet, malbec, shiraz and a selection of sweet wines (muscat, late harvest and a rose).

Description

Located between the Great Southern region’s Stirling and Porongurup Ranges, Arcadia Wines winery was established by John and Gaye Robinson in 1998, who visited Kendenup from Perth one weekend while looking for a getaway property. This single vineyard was first planted in 1997 on fertile slopes that dip into the picturesque creek known locally as 'Dead Man's Creek'.

The beautiful views of the Stirling Range inspired the name 'Arcadia', used in Roman and Greek poetry as a place where people were believed to enjoy the perfect life.

Great Southern regional heroes Riesling and Shiraz are the focus along with beautiful, cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon.

Description

From the Bellarmine Estate vineyard in Pemberton comes a range of red and white wines that have seen Bellarmine named as one of James Halliday's Top 100 Wineries, and rated 5 Red Stars, placing it among the best of the best wineries in Australia.  The vineyard takes its name from the 15th century "Bellarmine" jugs used to carry wine from oak cask to table, and the beautiful etchings on the bottle labels are taken from these antique jugs.  Winemaker and manager Diane Miller has been making wine for Bellarmine since the first vintage in 2004 and attributes the high quality of the grapes being produced to the excellent terroir of the vineyard.  While there is no cellar door, visitors to the region can find the wines at a number of local restaurants or bottle shops, and we welcome any and all enquiries.

Description

Established in 2012, Brave New Wine is an adventure in wine by Andries and Yoko Luscher-Mostert. While working towards owning their own vineyard, the pair source fruit which is expressive of place and utilises organic/biodynamic management from high quality sites in the Great Southern. Wines are created utilising natural ferments, high quality fruit and traditional oak. Brave New Wine is a three-time finalist in Australia’s Young Gun of Wine Awards which recognise the most interesting new players in the nation’s wine scene.

The Wines

Every new wine gets a brand new, custom designed label by Yoko each vintage. The creatively-named collection includes a 'Magical Animal' Chardonnay, 'Dreamland' Riesling and 'Shadenfreude' Shiraz.

Byron & Harold was established in 2012 by Paul Byron and Harold (Ralph) Dunning to produce a focused range of high quality, provenance based table wines for both the domestic and international markets. In only our second full year of winemaking, much respected wine reviewer James Halliday awarded Byron & Harold a ***** 5 Star Rating for 2015 and named us as one of his Top 10 New Wineries for 2015. Since then, Halliday renewed our status as a 5 Star winery for 2016, and upgraded our rating to a 5 Red Star winery for 2017 which we have still maintained in 2021.

Description

In 2004 Sam Castelli purchased land and a partially finished winery building on what is now the Castelli Estate, with the intention of using it as a family holiday home.  After finishing the winery building, Sam decided to continue what the previous owners had started and turned it into an operating winery after all. So began a bright and star-studded journey. 

Sam Castelli didn’t stop the construction at a winery. The estate now boasts a cellar door which is open Wednesday to Monday, 11am to 4 pm, and an authentic Italian restaurant which is open Wednesday to Monday 12 pm to 3:30 pm for lunch and  Fridays and Saturdays 6pm to 9:30pm for dinner.  And also the newly renovated accomodation just next to the restaurant, with five Deluxe king size en-suites and expansive views over Mt Lindsay, the vineyards, and the green rolling hills and Karri trees so typical of the Denmark countryside.

The Wines
The wines are made by local winemaker Mike Garland and are consistently awarded high scores from national wine press, and enjoy medals and trophies at wine shows around Australia.

Five ranges of wine are sourced exclusively from the Home Block vineyard in Denmark, and vineyards in Mt Barker, Pemberton, The Porongurups and Frankland River.

Wines available to try and purchase include riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet, grenache, a sparkling and a dessert wine.  The winery also makes a selection of alternate varietal wines, including an orange chardonnay and an iced viognier.

Description

Quietly spoken and considered winemaker Rob Diletti is renowned for his ability to coax the best from every parcel of fruit and vineyard that he handles, and for producing wines that year after year amass an unbelievable amount of high reviews, trophies and medals. Rob is also an extremely well-regarded and sought-after wine judge at shows around Australia, and contract winemaker for a large number of estates in and around the Porongurup sub-region. 

Castle Rock Estate was founded in the Porongroups in 1983 and from humble beginnings has grown into a 55ha property. 

The Wines
The riesling, pinot noir and shiraz are the heroes of the Castle Rock range. The rieslings have proven themselves to be exceedingly well suited to long-term cellaring, but are still approachable in their youth thanks to the white floral characterics of the Porongurup sub-region.  The pinot noir is famed for its consistency and silky, red cherry fruit, and the cool climate syrah is a shining light for the style.  Other wines include sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, cabernet franc, merlot and a dessert wine.

What began as a passion for wine in 1987 for Vic Kordic has blossomed into an impressive operation with an award-winning wine range. Sons Mark and Paul Kordic now head the vineyard and make cool climate estate-grown and bottled wines with elegant and unique character from their boutique operation.

The Wines

The wines have a great depth of flavour and texture born from sensitive winemaking and fermentation with natural yeast in the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, reflective of Manjimup’s ideal growing conditions. The award-winning range also includes Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and a Sparkling Merlot.

The modern cellar door offers samples of Chestnut wines alongside their Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Verjuice from Monday-Friday 10am-4pm, and on weekends by appointment only.

Description

This family owned, single-vineyard property was established in 1999. The Fokkema family selected the site for its ideal gravel loam soils, ample clean water and northern-facing slopes. The vineyard has been farmed organically for 15 years and is in the process of completing its ‘Certified Organic’ accreditation.

The Churchview vineyard is known to grow Margaret River’s most extensive amount of varieties within a single vineyard, with sixteen different types of grapes planted.

The Wines
The wines are made onsite at the property’s winery. Many are matured in oak, and Churchview prides itself on investing in the best quality French oak. Four wine ranges are made from the diverse varieties within the vineyard and offer easy drinking through to rare and fine collector wines. All the classic Margaret River varieties are made. The St Johns range features less-common varieties including a Zinfandel, Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Viognier and Marsanne.

Wine Tasting
The diverse wine range can be tasted at the Cellar Door which is located within a period cottage at the estate. The Heritage Listed St John the Baptist Anglican Church can be seen from the tasting room, hence the name. Many of the wines cannot be found for purchase anywhere other than the cellar door. Allow 30 minutes for a full tasting. Open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday.

Dogs are welcome (on leash) and visitors are invited to bring a picnic and make a day of enjoying the beautiful wines, stunning vineyard views and manicured gardens.

Unique Highlights
Those seeking curio wines will love discovering the wild fermented Riesling, Viognier and Chenin Blanc; varieties not often seen in Margaret River.

Description

First planted in 1976, Clairault Streicker has grown from a modest 4-hectare vineyard to a 200-hectare estate, incorporating four premium vineyards throughout Margaret River. The estate maintains an exceptional track record for its wines, which are grown following natural, biological farming principles.

Clairault Steicker combines two unique Margaret River wine stories. Streicker Wines began with a Yallingup vineyard in 2002, acquired by US native John Streicker who was so taken with the local lifestyle, sustainable viticulture ethos and world-class wines when visiting in 2001 that he decided to pursue his wine dreams in Margaret River. In 2012, historic estate Clairault Wines became part of the Streicker portfolio. Major enhancements have been made to all vineyard management to continually improve fruit and wine quality.

The Wines
The wine range celebrates the diversity of Margaret River’s hero varieties when grown in different areas of the wine appellation, with highlights including a single vineyard Cabernet made from 40 year old Wilyabrup vines and a cool-climate looking Syrah from Wallcliffe. It is a pure and unique journey through terroir in Margaret River. Look out for a few niche varieties in the mix too.

Wine Tasting
Follow a scenic driveway off Caves Road through farm land and native forest to the contemporary cellar door. A relaxing environment to discover the premium wines, it also offers a selection of house made produce available for sale. Private tours and tastings can be arranged in advance. Open 10am-5pm daily.

The Food
The Clairault Streicker Café serves up a selection of modern Australian share-plates for lunch daily. The menu showcases excellent produce, served simply, ideal for those who enjoy less formal dining. For the ultimate indulgence, spend an afternoon with the 5 course long lunch. A gorgeous stone fire-place makes for cosy dining in winter, while in summer, a picnic blanket in the gardens makes for a blissful lunch setting.

Description

The land on which the Ducketts Mill winery is located started out with a small 5 acre planting of riesling, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Additional plantings have increased the total vineyard area to 18 acres. 

Combining their love for cheese and wine, Ross and Dallas Lewis run a homely cellar door nestled in the lush Scotsdale Valley.  Set in an old timber farmstead and overlooking the vineyard, visitors can settle back and enjoy cheese platters matched to the cool-climate wines from the estate in Denmark. 

There are more than 40 varieties of cheese made under the Denmark Farmhouse Cheese brand and everything is made from locally sourced dairy produce. Left over milk is used to make ice-cream and fudge.

The Wines
Winemaker James Kellie is responsible for the concise collection of wines at Duckett’s Mill.  Sauvignon blanc, riesling, semillon, chardonnay, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and franc are all grown on the estate vineyards.  There is also a small collection of fortified wines, which are well-matched to the generous cheese and meat platters.

Wine Tasting
All wines and cheeses are available for tasting at the cellar door on Scotsdale Road from Monday to Sunday, 10-5.

Unique Highlights
Cheese, jam, chutney, fudge, premium home-made ice-cream and wines are all made at Duckett’s Mill and are available for purchase at the cellar door.

What began as a ‘retirement dream’ in the late nineties for Hilde and Duke has turned into an incredibly successful winery business.  The 25 acres of vineyards are planted exclusively to riesling, cabernet and shiraz, and due to the cool climate location at the western end of the Porongurup Range, the wines enjoy an elegance and spice that is endemic to the region. 

Hilde Ranson is a celebrated artist and responsible for designing the curved cellar door overlooking the vineyard and the picturesque Stirling and Porongurup Ranges. The cellar door also doubles as an art gallery, Hildes Gallery at Dukes, and a function area. 

The winery has been listed in James Halliday’s Wine Companion’s Top 100 wineries every year since 2013, and in 2017 the Magpie Hill riesling was James Halliday’s Riesling of the Year. 

The Wines
With celebrated local winemaker Rob Diletti at the winemaking helm, the wine range is concise and very high quality, and Dukes is widely regarded as one of the best riesling producers in Australia. The wine ranges consist of four Single Vineyard wines, four Magpie Hill Reserve wines, and a sparkling shiraz and riesling. 

The cool climate vineyard produces age-worthy wines of elegance, structure and finesse.

Dr Stephen Junk and Ola Tylestam have swapped a life of hospitals and finance for wine, animals and fresh air.   The vineyards are roamed by alpacas, Wiltshire sheep, chickens and ducks which looks after most of the weeds and pests, while the four generations of Cocker Spaniel dogs feature on one of the wine range’s labels. 

 

The Wines

The property boasts a selection of clones of pinot noir and chardonnay, used to make both still and sparkling wine.  The cool climate growing area assists in high natural acidity and minerality in the wines, while the warm days through summer give a long ripening season for the grapes.  Winemakers Mike Garland and James Kellie produce a variety of wines including riesling, sauvignon blanc, shiraz, cabernet, a dessert wine and two sparkling wines.

 

Wine Tasting:

The modern cellar door is perched on the side of a hill overlooking the pinot noir vines.  The AJAR restaurant is just next door and offers a wide selection of dishes alongside the Estate 807 wines.  There is indoor and outdoor seating, the deck offers sweeping views of the vineyards.  Both are open Thursday to Sunday 10am - 4pm.

Located in Frankland River 90 kilometres from the coast amidst the Great Southern’s valleys and slopes, the Ferngrove site was selected in 1998. The vineyard is nestled in undulating farmland surrounded by olive groves, wheat, sheep and cattle which enable a sheltered environment to grow grapes, while it still receives the cooling ocean influence for elegant fruit.

Ferngrove Wines are known for their intense flavour, fine acid and tannins that are truly reflective of the Frankland River region style. A range of varieties are produced across multiple price brackets, delivering value at each level. Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet blends are the focus.

The winery is also the site of one of Australia’s largest winery solar power systems, using 696 panels to power all of its operations.

Description

The winery is owned and operated by Elizabeth Reed, who first purchased one tonne of Riesling grapes from the Porongurup region in 2010. Flor Marchéwas hence born, with the idea to source small parcels of fruit from single vineyards across the southwest of Western Australia.

The estate’s approach to winemaking is based on the understanding that the most important characteristics of wine come directly from the vineyard, and as such, Flor Marché’s wines have been crafted to distinctly express the influences of soil, environment and climate of the traditionally south-west grape varieties.

The winery’s extensive range features Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache (sourced from 60 year old vines in the Swan Valley).

Cellar Door

Flor Marché currently operates a cellar door from the gallery area of the building; in an exciting new partnership with Wilyabrup Dreaming, a local pottery established in the 1990s. The charming cellar door perfectly reflects the long history of art and wine within the region and is open Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.  

Forest Hill Estate

Surrounded by Karri trees this stunning hillside winery is home to WA’s oldest cool-climate vineyard, cellar door and fine-dining restaurant, producing stunning wines from vines planted in 1965.

Description

Forest Hill has an interesting pioneer history and was once owned by the Holmes a Court family of Vasse Felix in Margaret River. In 1996 the vineyards were bought by the Lyons family, the current owners and old farming family from the Great Southern. The winery and cellar door were established in 2004 and the fine-dining restaurant, Pepper and Salt, is a popular wedding destination and from its elevated position has commanding views of the valley and estate vineyards.

 

The Wines:

The vineyard at Forest Hill winery was the site of the first grape plantings in the Great Southern in 1965, making it one of the oldest operating wineries in Western Australia.  The first vintage, a cabernet and a riesling, was released in 1972.  The cabernet was made by Jack Mann at Houghton Winery in the Swan Valley and the riesling by his son Dorham, at Sandalford.   

Today the wines are made by Guy Lyons and Liam Carmody.  There are 14 wines made at Forest Hill which include riesling, sauvignon blanc, gewurtztraminer, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and Malbec.

The Block Series wines are sourced from old dry-grown vineyards, and the riesling is often the recipient of medals and trophies at wineshows around the country.

Positioned beneath the Pepper and Salt restaurant, and built into a stone cellar, the cellar door is open Thursday through Sunday 10.30am - 5pm.
