Balingup Fruit Winery

Description

A unique winery was established in 1992 with the lofty vision to create a range of ports and liqueurs made from the best local fruit growing in nearby orchards. This one-of-a-kind wine range has received awards at the Perth Royal Show awards every year since Birdwood Park opened its cellar door, and gained recognition from the National Australian Fruit Wine Awards in 2017.

The wines include a signature Cherry Port, as well as a range of liqueurs flavoured with Granny Smith apples, apricots, oranges, plums and more.  

Cellar Door

Set inside a quaint packing shed, the cellar door at Birdwood Park is open from Friday to Sunday from 11am-3pm on Balingup's main street, and on Friday evenings for the Balingup Night Markets.

Description

Located in Boyup Brook, Beulah Wines began operations in 2007 within a 10 hectare vineyard. Owned by Craig, Jodi and Richard Nield. The estate grown wines have received a number of awards at local and national wine shows.

Varieties at Beulah include Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz and are available by mail order from the winery.

Description

Established in 1976, Blackwood Crest Wines is the oldest vineyard and winery in the Blackwood Valley Wine Region, with the first vines of the Blackwood region planted within its vineyard. Owned and operated by region pioneers Max and Roslyn Fairbass, the winery can be found in traditional farmland country halfway between Boyup Brook and Kojonup, with over nine hectares of vineyards.

Wine varieties at Blackwood Crest include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Semillon. Winery visits by appointment only.

Bridgetown Winery

Situated on the Black River just 9km from Bridgetown townsite, handcrafted Shiraz, Cabernet, Sparkling and Fortified wines can be tasted at the cellar door, by appointment only.

Description

Bridgetown Winery is a stunning 14 acre property sitting alongside the Blackwood River.

Shiraz wines are produced from grapes grown on the property. Any other grape varieties used are from vineyards in the Blackwood Valley. The tawny and ruby ports are produced from Shiraz grapes grown on the property.

Priding itself on producing low-intervention wines, all fertilisers are certified organic and fining of the wine is done by filtering and animal products are not part of the fining process.

Wines were previously produced in the Estate’s pump shed until the winery expanded and opened a cellar door in 2014. The Cellar door is open by appointment only on most days from 10am to 5pm.
 

Curlew Estate

A boutique winery, known for its artisan, whole bunch pressed Shiraz, made from its vineyard in the premium Mayanup district of Blackwood Valley.

Description

Planted on free-draining sandy soils on the same latitude as Margaret River (34 degrees south), this single-vineyard winery takes a detailed approach to its sustainable viticulture for its red-dominant range of wines.

Curlew Estate Shiraz is a standout wine born from the site’s unique soil structure and microbial activities. It is whole bunch pressed and fermented in small batches to allow the winemakers ultimate control to make high-quality wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Mouvedre are also incorporated with Shiraz to make the winery’s ‘Form One Lane’ label.

All wines are handcrafted, basked pressed and matured in French oak.

Wines are available by direct order. No cellar door.

Description

Dickinson Estate produces exceptional, cool-climate wines, produced from selected fruit grown on the Dickinson Estate Vineyard in the beautiful Blackwood Valley Wine Region.

Established in 1994, this property had unique beginnings’ as a sheep and cattle farm, providing rich soils and a natural fertiliser base for the vines to thrive in it’s winemaking future.  During the non-fruit bearing period, the farm sheep still graze amongst the vines, reducing the weed burden while at the same time, re-fertilizing the soils.

WINES

More than 450 hectares of premium varieties are under vine, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. Dickinson Estate was recognised in 2018 by James Haliday as a 50-star winery with several wines scoring over 95 points, and won gold and silver medals in the 2017 London International Wine Competition and various awards in Hong Kong and China.
 

Fairlady Estate

Description

The Hillbille property has been in the Bettridge family since the late 1980s and has a total area of 59 hectares. After many years supplying local wineries, Hillbille began making wines under its own label in 2003.

The Wines

The wines of Hillbille are all clean and austere, very much directed towards the European palate, and are all estate-grown. The Hillbille 'Estate' range is contemporary in style, providing excellent structure and balance to a range of classic grape varietals. Within this range are the Hillbille Chardonnay, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz varieties.

The 'James Brittain' signature range is dedicated to the family's great-great-grandfather James Brittain, whose 'signature' is evident across the City of Perth on such heritage buildings including the Town Hall, Barracks Arch and Cloisters. This series of wines are from only premium fruit, and produced in very limited quantities. Varieties within the range include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz Viognier.

The wines are available to purchase on the Hillbille website and are also exported to Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Description

Late in the 19th century, roaming cattle were often found grazing on the grass of the granite hills which are now home to Nannup Estate. Farmers recognised the quality of the land and the location was one of the first to be taken up for agriculture in the region. Mark and Alison Blizard purchased the land in 1998, and recognised it had the perfect attributes to grow quality wine grapes.

During the growing season, the Nannup Ridge vines enjoy long hours of sunshine followed by cool evenings and moderate coastal breezes in the afternoon, resulting in idyllic growing conditions. Abundant water, granite loam soils and low frost and disease pressure all contribute to reliable quality and consistent vintages.

The Wines

Nannup Estate makes two wine ranges; Rolling Hills and Firetower.

The Rolling Hills range utilises the reliable temperature, climate and ancient granite soils of the region to produce high-quality fruit with distinct varietal characters, and includes a Merlot, Tempranillo, Malbec, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

The Firetower range takes its name from a Jarrah Firetower overlooking Nannup Estate that was built in the 1960s. The expansive view over the renowned Nannup Hills, the coastal plain and Blackwood River Valley made the tower ideal for spotting emerging bushfires. Within this range is a Cabernet Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz Malbec Tempranillo and Tempranillo Rose.

<p> Sitting high on the granite ridges of the Blackwood River Escarpment and set inland from the Margaret River Township, Nannup Ridge Estate is host to 31 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz.</p> <p> The first vines were planted in 1998, with subsequent plantings taking place in 2000 and 2006. During the growing season, the vines are perfectly situated so they enjoy long hours of sunshine during the day and coastal breezes and cool evenings in the afternoon. Additionally, abundant water, granite loam soils and low frost and disease pressure all contribute to reliable quality and consistent vintages. </p> <p> The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon won Best in Show and Gold at the 2018 Timber Towns Wine Show. This Cabernet is highly perfumed with a leafy black fruit combination on the nose. It can be enjoyed now, however, medium term cellaring will enrich is complexity. </p> <p> Nannup Ridge Estate's 2016 Shiraz won Silver at the Timber Towns Regional Wine Show 2018. This generous and soft Shiraz displays a good depth of fruit. Cloves and plums are the notes on the nose, with a little sprinkle of spice. The palate holds a dry earthiness with the chalky tannins creating a gravelly loamy character.</p> <p> Winner of Silver at the Royal Hobart Wine Show 2013 and Silver at the Qantas WA Wine Show, the 2012 Merlot is a rich wine abound in aromas of red currant, macerated plums and hints of violets.</p> <p> The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon won Silver at the Australian Cool Climate Wine Show, Sydney Royal Wine Show and the Royal Adelaide Wine Show. This wine displays the bright fruit aromas of dark cherries and mulberries. It holds a palate laden with dark tones of leather, cassis and cedar. The finish boasts a succulent balance of fruit acidity and purity. Bringing the wine to an elegant and persistent close is the ripe velvety tannins. </p>

Description

Red Gully was established in 1997 to primarily grow red wine grapes and produce great wines that are based on the long ripening periods in this part of Western Australia. Owned and operated by the Walter family, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties were originally planted, alongside small blocks of Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay and Semillon.

Red Gully focuses on making Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are available to order online with free delivery to the Perth Metropolitan area.

Description

Scotts Brook was established in 1987 by local schoolteachers Brian Walker and Kerry as the second commercial vineyard in the district. The majority of the winery's 15 hectares of production is sold to other winemakers. Remaining limited quantities are made for the Scotts Brook label by longstanding contract winemakers.

Description

Operating from the Shedley family's 'Kingsley Downs' property, Shedleys Vineyard is located 16km east of Bridgetown in the farming district of Winnijup. The vineyard and winemaking enterprise only occupy 1% of the family's mixed farming property (which also includes sheep, harvest crops and blue gum plantation).

The Wines

The Shedley philosophy involves a hands-on approach to grape growing, winemaking and marketing. All vines are hand-pruned, grapes are handpicked, and wines are handmade using open fermentation, basket pressing and minimal fining or filtering. The vineyard is 3 hectares with roughly equal areas of Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. All plantings have trickle irrigation in place to prevent stress on the vines, which maximises the intensity of flavours and results in consistent, full-bodied wines.

The wine range includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Shiraz, Franc & Ruby Port, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Cellar Door

Shedley Wines can be visited by appointment only. Those who visit are encouraged  to get involved in the grape growing and winemaking process, assisting with pruning, picking, crushing pressing and bottling wines. Chris Shedley teaches the practices of bottling, and visitors are rewarded for their efforts with wines for purchase at a heavily reduced price.

Unique Highlights

The Shedley farm has several sizeable areas of native bush which are easily accessible on foot. Notably, the sheep pastures, Eucalypt plantings and nearby Blackwood River provide scenic walking opportunities. Chris is also the great, great grandson of John Jacob who planted Jacobs Creek in the Barossa Valley, and a range of memorabilia is on display at the Shedley Cellar Door.

Description

Located just 5 minutes from Bridgetown, Sunnyhurst Winery Estate is on the grounds of the historic 1896 Sunnyhurst Homestead which was known to be headquarters for the Red Cross during WWII. Since its establishment as a vineyard and winery in 2000, Sunnyhurst has used traditional winemaking methods and organic inspired viticulture. Currently owned by Geoff Herbert and Marie-Pierre Dussault, the Sunnyhurst philosophy emphasises hand-picked quality grapes, and the production of premium quality wines that reflect the taste of the region.

The white wines have great delicacy and flavour from a long cool fermentation, and reds are left to age in French oak that are recycled from Burgundy. All aspects of wine production are undertaken onsite, including bottling, corking, capsuling and labelling.

The Wines

Sunnyhurst varieties include Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Shiraz, Petit Verdot and a Ruby Port.

Cellar Door

The beautiful cellar door and art gallery at Sunnyhurst is open 7 days a week from 11am to 6pm. Owner Marie-Pierre Dussault provides complimentary tastings of the winery's award-winning wines. The cellar door area is very family friendly, featuring a kids' corner with wooden toys and colouring-in activities.

Unique Highlights

Customers are invited to wander through the beautiful gardens, admire the views of the Mattamatup and Blackwood River valleys and get a glimpse of the vineyard. The estate's romantic gardens display a collection of more than 600 rare and heritage roses, and an eclectic range of cottage plants and fruit trees - including an ancient, gigantic Moreton bay fig tree which dominates much of the property.

Tammar Gully Wines

A boutique family vineyard that prides itself on its highly-awarded Shiraz and focused wine range grown at their respected vineyard in Boyup Brook.

Description

Formerly grape growers for Goundreys and Wolf Blass, Tammar Gully Vineyard now produce their own selection of wines which are made under contrast by Coby Ladwig, the senior winemaker at Rockcliffe Wines in Denmark. Owned by Trevor and Mary Dickinson, the wines have been very successful on the wine award circuit, particularly at the Timber Towns Regional Wine Show and the WA Boutique Wine Show.

Though Tammar Gully does not have a cellar door, they offer frequent tastings of their wines at various events across Perth. Check the Tammar Gully Wines Facebook page for regular updates.

The Wines

Set amongst the rolling hills of Bridgetown, the first vines at Tanglewood were planted in 1999. Close to the highest point on the Darling Scarp, the winery's warm climate, well-drained soils and gravelly loams provide quality advantages for the fruit produced. Being a small batch boutique winery, focus is placed on producing a small variety of wines at a very high calibre.

The Wines

Tanglewood varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Merlot and Viognier. As the winery does not have a cellar door, wines are available for purchase online and in speciality wine stores. A portion of Tanglewood wine is also exported to Manila and China.

Tathra Wines

Description

Tathra's boutique winery was established in 1990 and originally produced fine matured fruit wines. Today, the winery has been converted over to grape wines alongside a range of liqueurs to pay homage to the tradition of the region.

Tathra makes a Classic White and Classic Red, a Tiger Port, their famous Nannup Nectar (a fine matured plum wine) and a selection of liqueurs.

The Food and Cellar Door

Doubling as a cellar door for premium wine tastings, the charming Tathra restaurant specialises in local delicacies such as freshly caught marron and trout. Open Thursday to Tuesday 11am - 4:30pm.

Unique Highlights

A short walk from the restaurant is the Ellis Cottage, a tiny cottage built in 1870 that is furnished with period artefacts, now preserved as museum, presenting a quaint and interactive insight into pioneer life in WA.  Museum open daily and entry is free.

Description

Owned and operated by Maree Tinker and Steve Johnstone, Whimwood Estate is situated alongside the Blackwood River near the old timber milling town of Nannup. The original vineyard was planted with Chardonnay vines in 2004. It was reduced significantly (and some wines grafted to Shiraz) in 2010 to focus on quality, closely monitor the fruit and select the very best grapes. Considerable effort is placed on the oak program, working with single forest selections from France to ensure the right spice, toast and flavours.

The Wines

Varieties offered at Whimwood include Rose, Chardonnay, Shiraz and a Sparkling Blanc de Blancs. The Whimwood wines have received multiple accolades from competitions including the Perth Royal Wine Show, the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards, and the National Wine Show of Australia. Wines can be tasted and purchased from the cellar door and or on the Whimwood website.

Cellar Door 

Steve and Maree welcome you to their cellar door at Whimwood, overlooking the majestic Blackwood River valley.  The cellar door  is open weekends and public holidays, 11am to 4pm and provides light lunches, including locally sourced and produced platters that compliment the range of wines.  Wine tastings and wine sales. The cellar door area is family and dog friendly.
