The Brierley Jigsaw Gallery located in the beautiful historic town of Bridgetown, has a unique place in the attractions of the South West. Started over 60 years ago by Mrs Jessie Brierley, the jigsaws were placed in the lounge for the amusements of her guests - rather than drinking in the bar! The original collection of 60 mounted jigsaw puzzles was presented to the Bridgetown community by Mrs Brierley. The collection continues to expand through gifts from visitors, including the World's Smallest Wooden Jigsaw. Donations are used to maintain the existing collection and to mount new pieces as they become available. In 2001, many jigsaws were professionally framed and hung. Lighting improvements were made and the gallery has taken on a new lease of life with visitors from all over the world who have heard of our unique attraction.

  • Open Days/times:Mon-Sat 9 to 4, Sunday 10 to 3 (Closed Christmas & Boxing Days and Good Friday)

Details

  • Open Days:Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday,Friday,Saturday,Sunday,Public Holidays

Description

Christian Fletcher has been a professional photographer for 27 years and still retains all of the passion and enthusiasm for taking a great photograph. At the core are three aspects of photography: capturing the beauty in landscapes, teaching his technical skills to others, and using his photography to reinforce the connections we all have with our natural environment.

Christian has perfected the art of light, composition, colour and post processing. He believes that all great landscape images have to have the ‘perfect light’ at their core, and it is this light that he is most respected for.

One of the highlights of Christian’s work life is imparting his knowledge to others in a series of workshops and online tutorials. His website lists his latest workshop locations (http://christianfletchertraining.com). He teaches for the love of passing on some of his knowledge, but admits that there is a ‘bit of a perk’ to traveling around the world to places like Cambodia, Iceland, Antarctica, and the many amazing locations in Australia for ‘work’.

The gallery also has a great range of gift items: scarves, bags, books, cards, cushions and so much more.

Description

Ceramics is my life: A fascination with earth and fire to transform it into stone, finding inspiration through the landscapes of the south coast.

Timeless values of form and technique are the basis for design and manufacturing principles in the handcrafting of over 100 different shapes.

The gallery has spectacular views of Scottsdale Valley, showcasing Art Series Vessels and Vases, Sculptural Art and extensive Tableware ranges by the very talented WA Ceramic designer.

The Studio

"My interest in clay started in 1972 at age 17. As a young artist, the isolation of this area enabled me to develop my own style.

The majesty and grandeur of the south coast landscape inspires a timelessness that I incorporate into the design process.

My work encompasses many ranges in contemporary shapes and colour combinations.

With so many trends and styles in food, versatility and function are of the utmost importance to me.

My inspiration and techniques are an eclectic combination of classic forms and structures from Europe and Asia, of which I find the latter more spontaneous and naive.

In addition to the 600 items of tableware, I craft a range of vases and ceramic artworks."

Mount Barker Old Police Station Museum

Mount Barker has an incredibly rich historical heritage consolidated in our amazing old police station museum complex, making this a must see tourist attraction.

  • Historical Sites:Buildings
  • Museums:Local History

Details

  • Open Days:Saturday,Sunday,Public Holidays

Description

History

The original Old Police Station built was by convict labour in 1868. The mid 1880s saw the horse stables divided off as a lockup and a Court House office was added in 1919. Surrounded by magnificent lawns and gardens, the Plantagenet Historical Society opened the Cottage as a museum in 1968, furnishing it with artefacts donated by residents of the Shire.

The Old Police Station was occupied until 1908 when a new police station was constructed next door.

In 1971 the Pioneer Room was built to display more artefacts, in 1985 and 1987 the cottage and stables were restored and in 1994 the Napier Creek one-teacher school was moved to the museum. In 1997 the second Police Station and Court Room were acquired.

Other buildings include a reconstructed 1870s house built of hand split wooden slabs and a complete apple picking shed has been assembled in honour of that industry's historical contribution and his and her "thunder boxes".

Policing

Police duties included having a change of horses ready for the mail coach which operated from Albany to Perth. They also patrolled as far as Esperance (more than 400 kilometres) on horseback and other duties included census, weather reporting and mail deliveries.

Visiting The Museum

Arriving at the museum complex, visitors will be greeted with a range of main and out buildings all nested in beautiful landscaped gardens, with structures festooned in gorgeous and colourful creepers with delicate and aromatic flowers in season, giving very much a yesteryear village like experience.

Anyone visiting the museum complex, especially those with an interest in historical heritage should set aside a few hours. There is an incredible range of historical artefacts, information and images spread through numerous buildings.

  • Galleries:Art Gallery,Glass

Details

  • Open Days:Thursday,Friday,Saturday,Sunday,Public Holidays

Description

All our glass artwork is designed and created in our studio workshop, located above the gallery. We encourage our customers to visit the studio to see examples of the different glass-working techniques. If they desire, they are welcome to consult on, or design their own glass works to give that really personal touch to their home.

The process can as simple as acquiring ideas from our portfolios or books and modifying them to create your own design. Once the the concept and colour scheme is organized the piece is halfway to being made. For hot glass it is even possible to arrange the coloured glass yourself to get just the look that you desire - then we will work the glass for you. We are also happy for clients who want pieces made by other techniques to discuss their design ideas with us.

The perfect place to find a unique gift, our gallery displays a showcase of kiln formed glass art pieces. The designs and concepts used in our collections are our own, and each peice is hand-crafted, so every item is unique. We enjoy pushing the boundaries to see how far it is possible to stretch glass into different shapes. We continue to experiment to see how glass performs when melted, and to extend our abilities, resulting in a wide range of artefacts. These include bowls, platters, lamps, jewellery and other sculptural pieces.

It is also possible for you to design and commission art works incorporating your own ideas and desires - talk to us when you visit. The gallery is set up for lampworking, so when you visit it may be possible to watch while we work with the flame to make beads or small sculptures. Repairs and restoration. Open by appointment.
