This fuels my use of up cycled materials as an avenue to create nature inspired sculptures that not only send a message but are aesthetically pleasing. I work in a diverse range of media, namely bronze, cement, timbre, steel and fibreglass. My artwork varies from small gallery size pieces to larger outdoor/indoor works. When creating sculptures, I place emphasis on form, structure, expression of movement and of course the meaning of each piece.

Description

I use a range of media, oil sticks, pastels, acrylic and oil paints and paper mache sculpture. My first love is oil sticks and pastels. I use these in my emotional landscapes. These drawings use blending, rhythm and harmonious balance to show you what I feel when I capture a moment in the scenery around me. They evoke rather than provoke, allowing you to to be embraced by the emotion of the moment.

The Brierley Jigsaw Gallery located in the beautiful historic town of Bridgetown, has a unique place in the attractions of the South West. Started over 60 years ago by Mrs Jessie Brierley, the jigsaws were placed in the lounge for the amusements of her guests - rather than drinking in the bar! The original collection of 60 mounted jigsaw puzzles was presented to the Bridgetown community by Mrs Brierley. The collection continues to expand through gifts from visitors, including the World's Smallest Wooden Jigsaw. Donations are used to maintain the existing collection and to mount new pieces as they become available. In 2001, many jigsaws were professionally framed and hung. Lighting improvements were made and the gallery has taken on a new lease of life with visitors from all over the world who have heard of our unique attraction.

Description

For, after securing my loving father and my adventurous mother, my gift: to enjoy to make pictures and to frolic around with colour and shapes. Doing so, brings me much satisfaction and joy.

I graduated from Sydney’s City Art Institute, with a BA in 1984. Since then I've been working as an artist, illustrator and teacher, mostly using water colour and ink on paper and acrylic on canvas.

I like to start with a theme or an idea and then see where it takes me. It is always a surprise to see what happens when I get out of my own way.

Cecile Rigoli

Being a professionnel picture framer gives me the chance to meet many artists, art lovers and creative people and I often have to answer The question "are you an artist yourself ? " My truthful answer would be that I like telling stories through various forms of art, mixing a range of media and poetry.

Chloe Wilder

Chloe Wilder is yet another Margaret River blow in from a small and extraordinarily exotic country off the East coast of Australia.

  • Open Days/times:BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
  • Galleries:Drawing,Painting,Mixed Media,Print Making,Artist Studio

Details

  • Open Days:By Appointment Only

Description

Her current body of work is focusing on the modern female portrait. In her large scale oil paintings, Chloe attempts to connect with women who display an air of strength and hunts down faces on social media.

It seems a tad odd of her to paint people she doesn’t know and to expect you to be impressed by her renditions of those who mean squat to you, but that is the whole point. What inspires a painter? Can you communicate a feeling? Is it the same feeling for everyone? What is the connection between the artist and the muse? How is that connection forged between people sometimes on opposite sides of the world? What even is a portrait in the era of selfie culture?

Colin Pratt

Colin has been experimenting with encaustic painting since 2000 and has been captivated by its possibilities and challenges.

Description

He’s incapable of stinting on the time required to hand-make beautiful, elegant objects which buyers cherish for a life time and bequeath to the next generation as heirlooms or collector’s items.

For a number of years he has been creating exquisite timber and metal furniture pieces and sculptures in a Workshop on the farm where he’s lived for 10 years with his family.

In his woodcraft and black smith shop he works creating and designing pieces that are unique and mostly a one-of design not just another craft shop but as a place and space that visitors can feel and smell the elements of steel, wood, fire & water, his workshop is  located in apple packing shed built in the early 1900s ,and his creations now being displayed in a purpose built gallery with materials sourced from the refurbishment of the Mount Barker apple cool-stores built in 1918 ,now known as Corkescrew Gallery and Workshop.

George says the 100 year old shed “is a perfect complement to the works I exhibit made from W. A. timbers – new and recycled".

George's passion for wood starting out  as a carpenter and joiner at the age of 16 and the metal working skills came from his father in law, now 91, a career blacksmith all of his working life.

There are plenty of stories such as these to hear and wonders to observe when you visit the Corkescrew Gallery. You’re welcome to spend time enjoying the artworks at your leisure, or alternatively, watch  as George transforms wood and metal into collectible and also functional pieces of furniture and art.

David Galloway

In the past Open Studios exhibitions, my work focused on creating narrative rich, household furniture and objects made from up-cycled materials. In 2018, I am stepping from looking at the things that surround people and make their lives rich and livable, to looking at how to enrich people’s identity in the context of their community and culture. This shift is accompanied by a considerable increase in the size of the works.

Description

Working with the concept of “different minds”, I’m developing interactive sculptural installations and collaborations across the 4ha of the Ferart Studio property.

My art practice seeks to create narrative rich pieces that investigate the integration of scientific, rational and economic activity; with the ecological, communal, intuitive and sensual aspects of human culture. It places a strong emphasis on inviting people to live more rich and interesting lives.

During Open Studios there will be collaborative activities and events for all ages, see the Ferart Studio website and Facebook page for details.

Description

The main theme of my work has been based on “family” – the lives lived and being lived, portraits of my current family and tributes to past generations. This is a challenge which provides a continuous source of inspiration to me.

I have also been working with home made recycled paper mache and canvas, into book form, my imagination being ignited by a family of grubs under a piece of Jarrah bark . “The Grubs Dairy” showing like us, the rhythm of their lives and the marks they make.

Along with painting, collage and drawing, Deanne is also using textile techniques such as silk screen printing and shibori, echo, resist and indigo dyeing with new and upcycled clothing and fabrics to explore these themes.

Deanne lectures in Visual Arts at South Regional TAFE Margaret River.

Debbie Chambers

In Open Studios 2018, I’ve used the creative process to explore the concept of “different minds”. The result is an “art scape” of up cycled works across the studio and property, that provide stories and a narrative exploring the experience of living and coping in a complex world of difference. “Same, same but different” using Mindfulness to view this space well describes what I am grappling with in these works.

Description

My art finds a place as “Quirky”, capturing elements of function and form, imbuing soul, storytelling, sharing new skills and old ways. It is about creative designs using repurposed materials – collecting, finding treasures, exchanging, sharing, using existing resources, making new things from old, and reducing consumption. Most of my work uses the flotsam and jetsam I find around me, for expression and imagery that illustrates what I see and want to express to others.

At Open Studios you will experience colour, light, assemblage, textiles and installations. Throughout the process, I delve into how we can reduce waste, create social networks, build opportunities, and enrich communities to encourage hope, optimism and creativity. Some works are collaborative, some provocative and many I hope are inspiring. Come and spend some time exploring the space. Enjoy the creative design ideas and projects you find, bring a picnic if you like and sit and soak up the works in the bush setting. Join the interactive activities, workshops and events we are planning for all ages over the two weeks of Open Studios…see Ferart Studio website and Facebook page for details.

Elisa relates to Croatian writer Dubravka Ugresic who thinks that memories are where we might live after we’ve lost the real thing. Memories are the closest she has to a home.
