Albany Farmers Markets

The Markets' philosophy is to provide producers in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia with a regular weekly direct outlet for their product.

 • Retailers & Producers:Farmers Markets

Details

 • Open Days:Saturday
 • Type:Food producer

Description

This area is rich in its diversity of farming, but, prior to the market, the majority of product was marketed through Perth (409kms away to the North). Local customers were unable to source direct much of the produce produced in the area.

The establishment of the market on a weekly basis provides producers with a direct outlet for the product and the customer has the choice of fresh, local, seasonal product. This has brought about immense benefits for the producer and customer. No longer is product trucked great distances at great expense, as well as incurring environmental pollution and packaging expenses. Product does not have to have to be picked early to ensure an extended shelf life. For example, tomatoes and strawberries are left longer to "vine-ripen" and are picked and sold at their peak of condition to the consumer. This applies to all product in the market and this has been a key factor in the enthusiasm that the community has embraced the market.

The weekly market is now a colourful and vibrant occasion attracting a wide range of customers from the region.. Its benefits have been to re-energise and focus producers on the quality and variety of their product. The customers not only now enjoy a huge range of vegetables, fruits, farmed meats, seafood and much more each week. They know its provenance and have returned to the seasonality of farming. Genuine excitement fills the market when the first of a new season product appears such as Asparagus, Avocados, Raspberries or Cherries.

Every week the market creates its own synergy between producers and customers. It buzzes with laden shoppers, bags and shopping trolleys rescued from the back of the shed and now put into service again. It is a social event for many, the catching up, the chatter and genuine good nature is evident all morning. It is an uplifting community experience, brought about by the simple sharing of being able to choose first class fresh food. Customers now talk with pride and ownership about "their market" and promote its value to friends and visitors. The ultimate accolade!

We hope that one day you will visit the Albany Farmers Market and experience it for yourself

Artezan Espresso Bar

The Italians call it dolce far niente: “the sweetness of doing nothing.” Australians call it hanging out or “hanging.” The social scientists discuss “flow experience” and the “expanded present”. Buddhists try to live in the moment. All these things can be done in artéZEN.

Description

You can disappear into written word or the world of your imagination.

You can notice and experience everything around you.

You can stop thinking altogether.

Espresso has long been a companion to us, whether it is the warm comforting cup on a solitary morning, an excuse for a private rendezvous, or a drink to be savored after dinner by a group of friends discussing politics, love and the meaning of life. One of coffee’s purest forms, with its deliciously bitter taste and irresistible aroma, espresso has become as much a part of our culture as it is to the Europeans

5 SENSES is roasted from the best of the best green beans the earth can manufacture 100% Arabica beans from the Simbu region of the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Here, a combination of rich volcanic soil and an equatorial climate combine to produce magnificent coffee growing conditions. Some coffee blends contain a portion of the best mixed with other lesser (though still reasonable) beans. A batch of 5 SENSES is purely the best of the best. 100% premium coffee from small growers in the mountains of New Guinea.

5 SENSES is not grown in plantations but by individual growers who are as passionate about their coffee as we are. After all, it is their livelihood. But there's still plenty of scope to enhance or detract from the taste of a coffee in the roast. Much of it has to do with the skill of the Master Roaster, some of it has to do with your palate. Giving your palate what it loves will equate to the best possible experience for you. 5 SENSES premium coffee a little below the equator.

Description

What does Breton mean? ‘Un Breton’ is a person native to Brittany, a north-western province of France. Brittany was originally an independent kingdom before uniting with France, and is the province historically regarded as the birthplace of the crêpe.

Since the 13th century, buckwheat thrived in the climate of Brittany, bringing a plentiful harvest that quickly ensured crêpes would become a favourite amongst provincial farmers. From humble beginnings, the crêpe evolved, making it not only a family favourite meal, but a gourmet cuisine regarded the world over.

The batter recipe you are about to try has been in their family for over four generations. They have created ‘Bistro Breton’ to share our love of crêpes with you and invite you to discover our traditional dishes and their love for French cuisine.

At ‘Bistro Breton’, the crêpes and dishes they serve are made to order and prepared using fresh ingredients. They want you to experience the real taste of Breton’s crêpes and to do so they have imported their buckwheat flour directly from their family’s producer as well as their crêpes makers.

Traditionally, you would eat a savoury crêpe made of buckwheat flour (which is naturally gluten free) for main, followed by a sweet crêpe (made of wheat flour) for dessert, all accompanied by a bolée of cider or a glass of wine.
