Revelation International Film Festival is set to reignite the WA screen industry with the launch of the WA Screen Culture Awards. The awards mark an exciting turning point for an industry that has been without an official awards platform since 2015.
This year's Revelation International Film Festival will preview a captivating selection of over 30 international and local feature films, documentaries and shorts in a vibrant week-long program between December 9 - 13.
The WA Screen Culture Awards ceremony will conclude the festival on December 13, celebrating the local film industry with a red carpet event and after-party, featuring free-flowing drinks hosted at Luna Cinemas, Leederville.
The WA Screen Culture Awards embrace all new, established and emerging screen practices and are open to anyone in the Western Australian screen industry. Whether it’s a documentary, feature film, computer game, moving image or installation, the awards place value on innovation and critical thinking across cinematography, writing, industry contribution and independent spirit.
Entries for the Screen Culture Awards close on October 31 with more information about entries and tickets available on their website. Films selected as finalists will be eligible to screen through Revelation’s unique online streaming portal, REVonDEMAND, which features over 100 locally made short and feature films. A selection of these films will also screen as part of the festival in December, representing an exciting and rare opportunity for local filmmakers to showcase their work to a live audience on the big screen.
Created in 1997, when Western Australia was only producing one feature film every three years, Revelation Film Festival has always been committed to local screen production. The organisation is a not for profit that completely relies on government grants and corporate sponsorships.
Festival Director Richard Sowada commented that:
“It’s a very different story today and screen forms are converging so rapidly, we feel now is the moment to bring them together and acknowledge innovation across all forms of screen practice that are putting WA at the front in a national context."
On top of the annual film festival, the team at Revelation are also behind XR:WA, the state’s first virtual reality (VR) festival. This year, the team will be working with local screen artists, composers, musicians, dancers and arts organisations to produce an ambitious cross-artform VR production named FourByFour.
FourByFour consists of four immersive VR short films that will be previewed at Revelation’s XR:WA Conference and Expo on December 3 - 6. The project will breathe new life into Western Australia’s creative sector, facilitating high-concept screen content, creative opportunities and employment.
