Description

Hamelin Pool Stromatolites in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area is a must-visit attraction for all nature enthusiasts.

These stromatolites are the oldest living fossils known to man and are only found in two places in the world. Out of these two places, Hamelin Pool is considered to be the most diverse and abundant example.

Hamelin Pool is located a 30-minute drive south of Denham, and it is recommended to take a stroll along the 200-meter boardwalk to witness the stromatolites. To get to Denham, visitors can take a two-hour flight from Perth, do the day's drive from Perth, or join an extended tour featuring a Shark Bay itinerary.

The Hamelin Pool Stromatolites are unlike anything you've ever seen before. The mystery surrounding their origin has attracted scientists from around the world as they compare discovering them to finding a living dinosaur. When you reach the site, interpretive signage along the boardwalk takes you through the theory of how the Stromatolites took shape over millions of years from a binding process of algae, sediment, and sand. The stromatolites themselves are fascinating as they grow at an astonishingly slow rate of just 0.33 millimeters each year. Even more astounding is imagining the time it took for them to reach their current height of one meter.

The best time to visit the Hamelin Pool Stromatolites is between April and October when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for exploring. The Hamelin Pool Stromatolites in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area is a unique travel destination that shouldn't be missed. Witnessing the oldest living fossils known to man is an unforgettable experience that no nature enthusiast should pass
