Description

Prehistoric species, rare plants, seasonal lakes, underwater snorkel adventures and land yacht sailing – there is something for everyone at Rockingham Lakes Regional Park.

Nestled in an area undergoing rapid urban expansion, Lake Richmond shelters a community of thrombolites, built by micro-organisms similar to those found 600 million years ago. Looking similar to limestone coloured rocks, this modern version of an ancient community is a rare natural phenomenon, that provides an insight into ancient life on Earth. The park’s internationally significant thrombolites are a drawcard for sightseers from far and wide.

The hub of the park is Cape Peron with boat launching facilities, viewing platforms, car parks and a walk trail along the coast. The Cape Peron Snorkel Trailtakes you past a series of underwater signs revealing many intriguing aspects of marine life in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park.

Other highlights include Port Kennedy Scientific Park, which protects unique vegetation communities and dunes that map 10,000 years of sea level changes, and the wide expanse of Lake Walyungup, a location for model aeroplane and land-yacht-club activities. Lake Cooloongup and Paganoni Swamp offer secluded bushwalks on sandy tracks.
