Muiron Islands Marine Management Area

The Muiron Islands Marine Management Area protects one of the region’s most beautiful underwater wilderness areas and is one of the most popular areas for dive charters from Exmouth.

The island group consists of South Muiron and North Muiron islands, which are separated by a deep-water navigable channel and both run in a north-easterly direction, and Sunday Island, which is smaller and lies further east.

The ‘cod spot’ runs parallel to South Muiron Island and is one of the most magnificent dives in the Exmouth area. At this reef cleaning station the limestone reef, in deep water, is covered in thousands of golden cardinalfish. Large potato cod are also frequently seen. Many other smaller cod and emperor species gather around divers. Watch for the colourful coral cod and enormous graceful manta rays.

Another spot known as ‘The Spit’ has numerous swimthroughs along a rocky ledge, where divers are enveloped by hundreds of tiny baitfish and may discover a grey nurse shark or turtle sleeping peacefully under a ledge. Large manta rays are also common. Lying between the South Muiron and North Muiron islands, The Gap provides an amazing drift dive over colourful soft corals, hard corals and sponges.

This beautiful dive site on the western side of south Muiron Island has lots of swim throughs and overhangs full of glass fish and plenty of soft corals.

Shaped like a keyhole into the reef this pretty dive site on the western side of south Muiron Island has lots of swim throughs and windows in the reef wall. The reef is covered in colourful soft corals.

This shallow dive on the eastern side of south Muiron Island is great for snorkelling or diving as the coral comes all the way to the surface. It is covered in plate coral and the site has impressive structures to weave around.

Remember that there are strong currents at the Muiron Islands and conditions may be unpredictable. It is recommended that you visit with an experienced local charter operator. En route you may see dolphins, pilot whales, dugongs, humpback whales (during the migration season), turtles and other wildlife.
