In the Margaret River region you’ll find a handful of courses which not only offer top quality facilities, but also glorious natural settings.
There aren’t too many places in the world where you can swing a golf club while taking in awesome coastal views, or while sharing the green with a friendly kangaroo. In the Margaret River Region, you can.
The 18-hole par 72 Margaret River Golf Course, which is celebrating its fiftieth birthday this year, is famous for its community of inquisitive kangaroos. You’ll also see lots of native birdlife, as well as magnificent karri, jarrah, marri and peppermint trees.
The course was created by a group of local golfing fans in the early 1950s who cleared an area of bushland about 5km from the township. These days, it’s maintained by volunteers and is now considered one of the state’s best country courses.
The course winds its way up the slopes of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge. If you make the last five holes you’ll be rewarded with amazing views of Margaret River’s famous vineyards.
Bunkers shouldn’t be too much of a problem here, but there are a few water hazards. The back nine also has a reputation for being quite difficult thanks to the undulating fairways and some tall trees.
Visitors are welcome most days and visiting club members are also eligible to play in competitions. If you don’t have your own gear you can hire clubs, buggies and carts from the on-course golf shop that also stocks balls, tees and a small range of equipment.
Further south, the Augusta Hillview Golf Club has the most spectacular views of any course in the area. With the Indian and Southern Oceans and the beautiful Blackwood River sparkling in the distance, the course has an incredible natural outlook. Just don’t let the passing sailing ships, migrating whales (viewable from the back nine) or the tranquil winding river put you off your putting!
The Augusta Hillview Golf Club is open to visitors and also offers clubhouse facilities.
Located just a few minutes from the Dunsborough township, the manicured fairways and excellent facilities of Dunsborough Lakes Golf Course make it one of the best in the area.
Set in 270 hectares of natural bush with green grass and numerous waterways, the course has been well designed. There are plenty of lakes making it pleasing to the eye but also challenging to all golfers regardless of your level of skill.
Contoured greens, elevated bunkers and strong winds will test your abilities but also make the course an interesting and fun one to play. The final hole is the most trying. At a massive 422 metres in length, with water running its entire length and bunkers on the opposite side, a par on the 18th is rare.
The course facilities include a tavern serving drinks and light snacks, electric buggies, a driving range and equipment for hire. Dunsborough Lakes Golf Course is open to members and the public and is available for corporate days.
If you really love it, why not move in? Residential land is still being developed and sold off, while numerous homes already exist around the course.
Nearby Busselton Golf Course is another real test of golfing ability thanks to the tree-lined fairways. Visitors are welcome to the course, which has good facilities including a clubhouse.
