Owners Sasha and Ben McDonald refer to the southern Karridale sub-region as the ‘cooler sister’ to the rest of the Margaret River cape. Their winery brings this cool to life in both the style of its wines and the estate vibe. Ben is the fifth generation on the McDonald family farm. He single-handedly planted the 6-acre vineyard when aged 19 and has continued to evolve his family farm since. In addition to vines, the property has over 270 fruit trees, several vegetable gardens and a few thousand sheep.
The property follows sustainable farming practices to encourage a healthy eco-system, with all elements coexisting to improve the overall heartbeat of the farm. Sheep graze among the vines for six months after harvest to control the weeds and add nutrients into the cycle. Bug pressure is taken care of by guinea fowls and chickens.
The wines are handmade with an intuitive, hands-off approach and every parcel of fruit is managed individually through the winemaking process. Natural yeasts are used for authentic, characterful wines. Often their trusty old basket press is used, making for a true artisanal feel. The pair converted their grandfather’s timber shed into a tasting room which is open daily from 10am – 5pm Thursday to Monday to taste their wines. Tuesday and Wednesday tastings by appointment.
A range of tasting plates, bursting with tasty interpretations of the farm’s fresh-picked seasonal produce, incredible grass-fed lamb and whatever seafood has been caught off the shores of Augusta by their sea mates. Vegetarian and dietary options are catered for.
Get the true farm experience with a progressive tasting through the vines, macadamias and hop garden to gain a local’s understanding of what a ‘ground to glass’ philosophy truly entails. The tour is extra special from January to April during harvest. Bookings recommended, begins 10:30am daily.
