Mt Ragged Walk Trail

Amongst the mallee scrub and woodlands in this northern part of the park, Mt Ragged offers a sheltered picnic and camping area and the thrill of a summit walk.

Description

An intriguing mix of plants grow on and near Mt Ragged including orchids, ferns and plants such at the showy banksia that are more typical of coastal locations. The Mt Ragged area is also a terrific spot for birds. Look for purple-crowned lorikeets, yellow-plumed honeyeaters, the shy heathwren and birds such as the mulga parrot and crested bellbird, which are more typical of drier country.

Getting there:

Four-wheel drive only. Mount Ragged is only accessible from the south on Fisheries Track. From Fisheries Road the Balladonia Track is a rough, rocky sand track. May be impassable when wet.

Mt Ragged Walk Trail

A difficult walk to the top of Tower Peak (594 metres). Mt Ragged is a steep-sided ridge surrounded at about one-third height by a wave-cut platform. The walk trail leaves the Mt Ragged car park and ascends the range to Mt Ragged (Tower Peak).

The Mt Ragged Walk Trail also offers good opportunities for spotting birds. Mt Ragged and its surrounds feature mallee scrub and woodlands, home to malleefowls, mulga parrots, chestnut quail thrushes, shy heathwrens, purple-gaped honeyeaters, yellow-plumed honeyeaters and crested bellbirds.

Height (above mean sea level): 594m Distance: 3km return Trail Classification: Class 5 (Difficult) to 500 metres from the summit, then trail exceeds Walk Trail Classification as this section is very steep and requires frequent rock scrambling.
