Pottery for me is an intricate pathway where I am somewhere off to the side of the path! There is an infinite playground of challenge, experimenting and fun – but this is where I am happy to be.

It is less linear and suits my emergent mind. Some days having my hands in clay is enough. Others I am lost in the meditative process of repetition or finding a form or finish that reflects an inherent part of me. I have always loved making; from painting, to woodwork, children’s book illustration and all things craft. Pottery is my newest art form and seems to unite all the things that I love about being creative. It challenges and grounds me. I can lose myself and feel more connected at the same time. It ties me to my grandma who was a potter, to an ancient craft that defies time and to the person who takes joy in holding one of my pots. While pottery can be soothingly solitary, I always feel supported and love sharing the experience. I continue to learn from my good friend and mentor Bill Meiklejohn, and always make time for the magic that happens at Willyabrup Dreaming. I have recently set up a studio at Hardware Creative, where I am surrounded by a lovable bunch of likeminded creatives. Come see where we play! Mieke x
