Description

His Majesty's Theatre is an Edwardian theatre in Perth, Western Australia. Opened in 1904, during a period of great growth for the town, the theatre is located on the corner of Hay Street and King Street in Perth's central business district. At the time the theatre was opened, it was the largest theatre in Australia, and had seating for over 2,500 people. It is also thought to be the first reinforced concrete building constructed in Perth.

Over its life, the theatre has hosted large-scale musicals, ballet, opera, Shakespearean plays and many other events. It has been renovated numerous times, in the late 1970s when the State Government purchased it and performed an ornamental restoration whilst modernising the facilities provided and recently completed works on the façade. It is the home of the West Australian Opera company, which performs regularly.

The importance of His Majesty's Theatre to the cultural fabric of Western Australia has been recognised by its inclusion on the State Register of Heritage Places and the Register of the National Estate. It has also been named a "State Heritage Icon", and is believed to be the only remaining working Edwardian theatre in Australia.

Looking for some more jazz to fill your weekends? Want to be on the ground floor before our young musicians take off and conquer the world? Then come along to our late night sessions of Jazz at The Maj. First Friday & Saturday nights from March til November.

Short, sharp, and full of punch, WAYJO have opened up the stage to our band members to present their own ensembles, be they trios, quartets or something a little larger, to keep your night going a little longer.

For only $10*, you’ll be treated to sets curated entirely by WAYJO band members. All profits from the performances will go straight to the band members as well, so you’ll be supporting young musicians as they hone their craft.

We’ll be listing the acts performing closer to the performance dates, so keep an eye out on our webpage and facebook for the announcements as they come to hand.
