Birak Concert (expired event)

Events Jan 26

Supreme Court Gardens, Cnr Barrack Street and Riverside Drive, Perth, WA 6000

Description

Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures, the annual Birak Concert boasts a stellar line up of indigenous entertainment.

Birak is the Nyoongar season for the hot and dry months of December and January; during this time the Moodjar trees flowers bright orange and are known as the Nyoongar Christmas Trees. In local dreaming, it is said that when a Nyoongar person passes away their spirit enters the tree where they wait for Birak. When the tree flowers, their spirit goes west over Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) to be with their ancestors.

This year’s line-up features talent from across the state and from over east, including a traditional Welcome to Country, stage performances from Lilly Gogos, Ron Dick, Lil Mase, The Last Kinection, and a bunch more! In addition to the jam-packed stage schedule there will be inflatable amusements, workshops, community stalls, and the Elders Marquee.
Hosted by Phil Walley-Stack from Walleystack International, the event will kick off at 3:00pm and run through to 7:30pm and is the perfect opportunity for all Australians to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. If you are unable to make it on the day, the event will be broadcast by Noongar Radio.

Remember to bring a picnic blanket, sunscreen and hat to enjoy the event from day through to evening.
