Description

Workshop with Melissa Clements | Introduction to Renaissance Style Underpainting Techniques. Emulate the Renaissance masters using the Verdaccio painting technique.

Used in the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel and oil paintings of the Madonna and Christ, Verdaccio combines black, white and yellow ochre to create a green monochrome underpainting. Layered with flesh tones, the resulting portrait glows with vibrant colour and translucency. Artist Melissa Clements will walk participants through the historical background of Verdaccio in the context of the Italian Renaissance, guiding them through the process of creating the preliminary layers required to make a lifelike portrait. Tickets are strictly limited and include champagne and nibbles. $45, available at https://www.lesterprize.com/ About the artist Melissa Clements is a portrait artist from Perth, Western Australia. Her portraits echo the traditional work of old masters, merging conventional methods with contemporary techniques to discuss modern narratives. She has previously been a three-time semi-finalist in the Lester Prize and hosted her first solo exhibition "We Prepare a Face" in December 2020. In 2018 Melissa completed an art residency at the New York Academy of Art and has attended summer school programs at the National Art School in Sydney.
