‘Chinoiserie’, the Western appropriation of Asian aesthetics, briefly represented the height of fashion for European aristocracy during the early eighteenth century, before falling out of favour and being variously characterised as effeminate, immoral and transgressive. Today the style remains something of a guilty pleasure, via its undeniable aesthetic charm, but intensely problematic and kitsch appropriation of Asian culture. A Gentle Misinterpretation will transform FAC’s gallery spaces into an opulent, sensual and comedic exploration of one of Western culture’s most fascinating aesthetic curiosities. Heavens Spot

Details

  • Event Venue:The Art Gallery of Western Australia | AGWA
  • Type:Free
  • Art Exhibitions:Painting,Other Visual Arts
  • Produced By:The Art Gallery of Western Australia | AGWA
  • Hosted By:Art Gallery of WA
  • Ticket Price:Free

Description

Following on from AGWA’s late 2021 project 100 Vandals, which featured 100 black book drawings by Western Australian graffiti artists, Heavens Spot welcomes a select painter from this community of artists to leave their mark directly on the walls of AGWAs rooftop gallery. Its title refers to a graffiti location that is hard to reach and highly visible, and therefore highly prized. Located in AGWA’s uppermost gallery space and speaking out to the city’s high-rise backdrop, Heavens Spot is a dialogue between the cityscape that serves as the stimulus and surface for this artform and the cultural position of graffiti more broadly. Cultivating a layered awareness of the ways graffiti engages with our surroundings, Heavens Spot shifts perceptions in subtle and bold ways. Typical encounters with graffiti are often fleeting; shapes and colours command a moment’s attention, leaving impressions of a maker, a mark, a motif, as we move on to some other place. Equally, both the smallest tag to the largest masterpiece can become comfortably familiar as we recognise the practiced hand of graffiti writers who mark out territory along shared local routes. Though the walls of AGWA have been legalised for this moment, Heavens Spot does not seek to permit the act of painting illegally, rather it observes the significant creative influences that operate in this sphere. Part of an international network of painters, their marks remap cities and suburbs according to alternative feelings towards, and understandings of, the spatial frameworks that normally govern our lives.

Description

Taylor and Pugh have worked together to transform Taylor’s Niminjarra paintings, usually seen on canvas or paper, into highly tactile textile works, animating the important Niminjarra Jukurrpa (Dreaming). “Niminjarra is the two brothers transforming into a snake so they can come back home to Ngayartakujarra (Lake Dora). They were in training for ceremony, those two brothers, but they were kept too long, and nobody was there to release them. They waited then they decided to transform into snakes to travel back to where they came from, because their mother was waiting for them. This is Jukurrpa (Dreaming story).” — Desmond Taylor, 2019 This body of work is born of Taylor’s desire to see his artworks reimagined through a textile medium and is a contemporary crafting of important ancestral stories deeply rooted in Warnman Ngurra (Country). The dynamic intercultural collaboration between Desmond Taylor and textiles practitioner and educator Mariaan Pugh continues the practice of cultural and creative exchange, driven by Taylor and other Martu artists through Martumili Artists, sharing narratives and understandings of the world from the Great Sandy, Little Sandy and Gibson deserts with national and international audiences.

Continuing Ferrier’s decades-long feminist practice, the new body of digital prints use photo-montage processes to reassemble ‘taboo’ 1980’s Playboy centrefolds. Challenging misogynistic gender ideals and giving voice to feminine authority, Ferrier reimagines women’s bodies from passive, objectified figures into dynamic surrealist forms. The new works featured in Pop Porn were developed while Ferrier was in residence at Fremantle Arts Centre in 2021.
