2 Marys tells the compelling story of the friendship between Frankenstein creator Mary Shelley and the transgressive writer Mary Diana Dods in this world premiere production for Fringe World '22.

In 1825 Frankenstein creator Mary Shelley becomes confidante to her writer friend Mary Diana Dods’ dramatic decision to pass herself as a man so that she may marry a pregnant mutual friend.

Mary Dods’ act of courage rapidly turns sour as her ‘wife’ begins to turn against her. Can their flight to Paris avert what already seems a doomed scenario? Can Mary Shelley assist and maintain the charade she herself has helped engineer?

For the first time, this true tale of 19th century cross-gendered bravery comes to life for Perth Fringe World audiences. Western Australian playwright/director Suzanne Ingelbrecht has conceived a theatrical gothic romance rich in Frankenstein imagery and high drama, perfect for our COVID-19, #Me-Too times.
