Description

Alexandre O. Phillipe’s Memory explores Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979), tracing the story of the film through mythology, cosmic horror, science fiction, and our fascination with the monstrous.

Memory dives deep into the unconscious fears that gave the film its power, and explores how the movie came to redefine horror and science fiction at the end of the last century. Shifting between the Necronomicon (as defined by both HP Lovecraft and HR Giger), b-movies, cult cinema, colonialism, Greek mythology, soft flesh and hard science, Memory is essential not just for fans of the Alien universe, science fiction, horror, and all points in between, but for anybody interested in the monsters that lurk in the id.

Interviews with Veronica Cartwright, Ron Shusett, Diane O’Bannon, and Tom Skerritt, and many others, are woven together with archive footage to create a truly fascinating documentary. Director Alexandre O. Phillipe’s previous films include 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene (Revelation 2017).

“Memory is not a simple making-of, but a visual work of cinema scholarship that has a lot to offer for both casual viewers and rabid devotees of Alien.” Rue Morgue Magazine.

Directed by Alexandre O Phillipe.

Screening as part of the Other Suns Film Program.
