Description

Gary has been making beautiful pottery since 1974 when he commenced his career with Courtlands. Gary specializes in high-temperature reduction firings with copper reds, Chun Ware, and Rutile glazes.

He worked with Barry and Grenville Courtland for 5 years and mastered his production skills while working in terracotta clay. Courtland’s produced a large range of Terracotta Garden Pottery in its earlier years including salt-glazed stoneware. Gary considers himself to be the lucky few to have successfully completed training at Courtland’s. The training helped him to learn the pottery skills which have been passed down over the last 160 years in Australia. His splash decoration techniques along with the glaze layering platters are his signature style of work. He is currently working as a potter in residence at Commonage Pottery Gallery at Happs Winery in Dunsborough. He regularly conducts workshops for glaze development and throwing skills. "Inspiration comes easily from the rich history of form, texture, and color and from just about every culture on earth plus love and passion for what I do. After all these years I am still like a little kid at Christmas waiting to see the results and surprised from the next kiln load."
