Last Train to Freo. by Reg Cribb

Fremantle Theatre Company is proud to present Last Train to Freo by Reg Cribb

  • Dates:Aug 3 - 20
  • Venue:Victoria Hall, Fremantle

Details

  • Performing Arts:Theatre
  • Hosted By:Fremantle Theatre Company

Description

FTC invites you to experience the 20-year revival of the Patrick White Award winning play, restaged for the first time in Fremantle and directed by Perth's own champion of the theatre Reg Cribb. When two rough-cut gems fresh from Perth’s prison system board the train in Midland, the stage is set for a truly wild ride south. Cutting sharply through every sector of WA society – not even these wayward misfits can predict where they will end up. Cribb was inspired to write the play after he witnessed two thugs harassing an attractive woman on a Midland to Freo train, and what he has written in response is an inspired, richly layered, dramatic story with several themes intertwined and unravelling as one. The play is a ticking time-bomb, winding-up-and-up energetically, as the train approaches its final destination: Fremantle. At each new stop, more is revealed about the passengers and the tensions that unite them. And along the way, the work tears open some key discourses that rippled through the Perth social climate at that time, and quite unsurprisingly, now. Running time: 80 minutes, no interval. Warnings: Violence, bad language, sexual themes.

Description

Winner of the New York Drama Critic’s Circle award for Best American Play, The Glass Menagerie is the timeless family drama that thrust Tennessee Williams into the international spotlight. Amanda Wingfield only wants the best for her two children, Tom and Laura. With her socialite adolescence behind her, Amanda puts all her energies into pushing her children up the social and financial ladder from which she has fallen. Shadowed by the absence of a father, they struggle to break free from their mother’s imposing ways. Clare Watson (York, The Torrents) exquisitely directs Tennessee Williams’ most vulnerable and semi-autobiographical play. Fuelled by pity and duty, burdened by love and hate, the Wingfields are one of theatre’s most iconic and heartbreakingly real families. This tour de force performance by much loved Mandy McElhinney (Wakefield, Love Child, Paper Giants) is your grand night out at the theatre.

Returning to the stage for a national Australian tour after a sell-out Sydney world premiere season (Feb 21) and an Adelaide Festival smash hit run (March 21), Rafael Bonachela’s Impermanence is “arguably the single best piece created by and for an Australian dance company for many years” (Adelaide Advertiser). A visceral and thrilling exploration of the juxtaposition of beauty and devastation, this full-length work features a new score full of emotional power from Grammy Award-winning composer Bryce Dessner. Best known as a founder of American rock band The National and for his film scores for The Revenant and The Two Popes, Dessner was initially inspired by the tragedy of the Australian bush fires and the Notre-Dame fire in Paris. With an exquisite recording by the Australian String Quartet, and the full might of Sydney Dance Company’s “awe inspiring” (In Daily) ensemble, this is an epic, driven performance that packs an emotional punch. “Dance moves for the end of the world… Choreographer Rafael Bonachela sets his excellent dancers on a whirling, bounding trajectory…” – The Sydney Morning Herald.
