From abstract shapes to functional furniture, is the 2020 Out of The Woods Exhibition, which has proved to be an exciting event that hands out a People's Choice Award to its favourite contender
A major event on the woodworking calendar each year is the WA Wood Show held at the Claremont Showgrounds in July and August! The Fine Wood Work Association organizes, as part of the Show, the Out of The Woods Competition and Exhibition covering all forms of woodworking.
The Out of The Woods Competition and Exhibition aims to promote woodworking. Other than a requirement that wood is employed as the predominant material there are few boundaries. Pieces may be classic or modern, emphasize function or form or be shaped by hand tools or machines. The Out of The Woods Competition is open to woodworkers of all ages and skill levels.
The categories for Adults cover all forms of woodwork from furniture making to carvings, wood turning, box making and a miscellaneous section for those other works that defy classification.
There is also a Novice category for new entrants, and a People’s Choice Award which is decided by public votes at the Wood Show. The Out of The Woods Competition and Exhibition also aims to encourage young woodworkers and has categories for secondary school students. There is an open category for each year from 7 to 10, and separate Furniture and Artistic categories for years 11 and 12. The Out of The Woods Competition and Exhibition is recognised as one of the leading woodworking competitions in Australia.
