Description
A viewing of 'Les Misérables' at UWA Somerville for Perth Festival
In the Paris suburb of Montfermeil, where Victor Hugo set the original Les Misérables, conscience-laden police officer Stéphane is dismayed at his team’s methods. In the neighbourhood, tensions between rival community leaders may be coming to a head, and when a kid accidentally films some heavy-handed policing Stéphane tries desperately to mediate, to avert a brewing riot. As well as being marvellously exciting, director Ladj Ly’s debut feature is sensitive and sympathetic. Crackling with revolutionary fervour, this is one of the year’s most essential French films.
